July 22 Cologne We had a fabulous dinner last night with our new found friends, Diana, John, Beatriz and Terry. There was much laughter reminiscing about the ill fated windmill tour in the Netherlands but now we we sail on to Germany.......... This is our first time on tour in Germany and Cologne is our first port of call. We were told the city was nearly destroyed in WWII and that there is only a very small portion of any medieval buildings left. The biggest of these would be the Cologne Cathedral named after Saint Peter, so off we bused to explore what we could of Cologne which sits right at the waters edge on both sides of the Rhine. The enormous Cathedral is easily seen from a distance. The bus dropped us off in front ... read more

Arrived Cologne at 7am. After leisurely breakfast departed for Augustusburg Palace in Bruhl. Palace constructed for Clemens August (1700-1761) prince elector and Archbishop of Cologne. Oppulent Rococo style with the most amazing grand marble staircase as important guests arrived in their coaches. Palace only used in the spring/summer by the prince elector as a reception house for international guests. Very lavish state receptions were held by the German state in recent times here. Quick look at the gardens then 15min drive to his hunting lodge. Here to was grand oppulent apartments plus a falconry. We had a good look inside then returned to ship for lunch. After lunch quick walk along the promenade towards town. Departed for Amsterdam at 4.30pm. Farwell Gala Dinner tonight.... read more

After breakfast arrived Rudesheim. Hopped on the tourist bus for drive around town then to Siegfrieds Musical Museum. Privately owned collection of historical mechanical instruments. Very interesting display of pneumatic and mechanical organs, pianolas & street organs. After strolled through cobbled streets and alleys back to the ship. Lunch then cruise the picturesque Rhine Valley. Sailed through the Rhine Valley Gorge, very scenic, castles on the hill tops overlooking the river and villages. Some castles in ruins others now privately owned hotels. Around every bend another perfect view, cute villages backdropped by forests judt turning yellow for autumn or steep mountains with ruins atop. Because the river is so low many people enjoying the rocky riverbanks either fishing, picnicing or sunbaking. Could only just cruise through the gorge as the low water mark was 53cm. We arrive in Cologne (Köln in German) around 8 am. It's beautiful day weatherwise. By 9, we are beginning a walking tour of the city. My guide is a young man named Chris who likes to keep us amused with odd little stories. Cologne (Köln in German) is one of the country's largest cities. For much of its existence it occupied the west bank of the Rhine only. In fact, during Roman times it was a bastion of civilization against the Germanic tribes on the opposing bank. The city now straddles both sides of the Rhine. Cologne was heavily damaged, in fact almost levelled, during WWII. Its famous centrepiece, the Cologne Cathedral, is so large that it was used by allied bomber crews as a key landmark. The cathedral itself sustained heavy damage but remained standing. ... read more

The massive Cologne Cathedral dominates the skyline of the city. It was thought to be the highest structure in the world from 1880-1884. Constructed off and on over a period of more than 600 years, it was begun in 1248 and is reputed to be the final burial site of the bones of the three kings who visited the baby Jesus. Although it exterior is blackened from pollution, efforts are being made to restore it, but this is extremely difficult to do without damaging the stone from which it's built. Our cruise-supplied guide led us around the old city and then we decided to take an additional tour of the inside of the cathedral.... read more

It is been a while since we really had visited Germany. OK, we drive to the ashram of our spiritual master Paramahamsa Vishwananda which is in the Taunus region near Wiesbaden very often, from time to time we go to Stuttgart for family visit, but Markus really has not seen a lot around Germany. Well, and this is my (Nina's) home country. So we got a big chance this year in September. Our spiritual master went on a Darshan Tour (a tour on which he blessed people) through Northern Germany. 6 Darshans were on the plan in different cities - an amazing gift for Germany and a huge blessing for us as we could join the whole tour. The first stop was Cologne. For us it was a 7 hour trip by car from Lake Thun ... read more

It was a rainy day today, so museum time it was. I went to the "NS Documentation Centre" - basically the Nazi Museum for Cologne. It's housed in the former Gestapo building and prison which certainly adds to the authentic feel and creepiness of the place. It was a truly impressive museum though - right up there with the very best Nazi/WWII museums I've been to. You start in the basement which is where the prison was - they've preserved the etchings on the walls which I found really fascinating. I guess prisoners were allowed to write/scratch things, and so you're left with this beautiful mixture of poems and musings about liberty, hope, resistence, love. You're also left with harsh words against the Gestapo and the Nazis, against fear, against inhumanity. And there are also many ... read more

Major props to Clarion Frankfurt - when I checked out I got a very heart happy birthday from the staff at the desk. Again, the area might be super dodgy but the hotel itself I can't recommend enough. The same, sadly, is not the case for Flixbus. If you're in a rush or have a lot of baggage, save yourself the potential hassle. Please. Bus was 50 min late today. I heard "5 more minutes" 4x from the employee at the station. Funny, I heard that a lot in Nuremberg too when the bus was 70 min late. I was giving it 10 more minutes before I was going to march into the ticket stand, cancel my ticket, walk back to the train station and pay the 40 euro to take a train to Cologne instead. ... read more
