Hi Everyone! I am going to try to write to you on this from now on rather than emails but for those who didnt get it before here is an update on cologne. So anyway Ive been in germany like a week now and I thought it was high time for some travel stories. Ive been living with Tommy in Cologne for the last week-for those that dont know him he is a German mate from school. Its been cool catching up with him again and his girlfriend and housemates are all very nice. They have a sort of an organised ride share system here in germany where you register and its pretty legitimate so I got tommy to sort me out a lift from frankfurt to cologne. I was a bit nervous about it but ... read more

Koln - Yes. The boffins don't yet know about umlaut(?) Against normal instinct, Arvey Bee has opted for a general broadcast communication to advise all other agents on a mission of his whereabouts. Ex-double agent Tommy has come to the aid of our man with bed and suitable company. Tommy has had experience in this, having once played Front of House in a Caberet accompanied by Two Ladies Due to the incognito nature of our man, we were unable to publish a photo, but the snap above shows his careful choice of disguise before leaving on his mission. Head office was of the opinion that the use of a beard trimmer on the scalp was an attempt to eliminate security risks by avoiding the need for conversation when attending the barber. However, the above photo ... read more

Almost on the way... / Fast auf dem Weg... Only a few hours before it is time to say good bye...! My backpack is ready, the flight tickets next to it and still... it somehow does not feel real yet! I spent my last weeks at home in Hohndorf with my parents and I enjoyed those days so much. The final count down happened in Bochum and Cologne with two great friends and a concert of Herbert Grönemeyer! What a way to say good bye!! Just brilliant! If everything goes (hopefully) right you'll read the next news from Hanoi City soon. Until then a big hug to all of you **************************************************************** Jetzt sind es nur noch Stunden, bevor es wirklich los geht! Der Rucksack ist gepackt, das Flugticket liegt bereit und trotzdem fühlt es sich immer ... read more

My parents had planned on coming to Germany to visit in March during my sister’s spring break since I left the US and the week finally came. My parents came in on a Friday morning and I had made plans on what we would be doing during the nine days they would be in Germany. My boss at my internship was nice and gave me the week with my parents off from work. As soon as my parents got into Germany we planned to drive to Munich for the weekend. I set up all the hotel plans and car rentals before they came so we just picked up the car from the airport. We started out drive to Munich from the Düsseldorf airport and found it took like 6 hours to get there. I guess my ... read more

Typing on a German keyboard is extremely frustrating. It consists of a lot of backspacing which just makes it worse because the backspace button is small and misplaced. Very annoying. The z and the y are also switched so I might just get to a point where they will be switched in the entry and thats that. Onto Cologne...Dave and I initially slept through the train that we were supposed to catch first, but thankfully a train leaves from amsterdam to cologne every hour. We arrived in Cologne around noon and to the hostel to drop our bags by about 1. We hadnt eaten all day so we headed to a small sandwich place and downed a quick bite and gross coffee. And then it was time for the IMHOFF CHOCOLATE MUSEUM. To be perfectly honest, ... read more

Today our group got up at the crack of dawn to go to Cologne or "Köln." It is one of the largest cities in Germany and definitely one of the oldest. We had to take a 3 hour train ride to get there. During World War II it was bombed very badly and the only left in standing is this massive cathedral! It is a pretty amazing and LARGE building. We climbed to the very top which is something like 500 steps! It was quite the hike to the top, but totally worth it! Once at the top I could see the entire city which is located on the Rhine River. After that we went to this very German Brewery called the Colner Hofbrau which is famous for their Kolsch beer. Still not a big fan ... read more

So if you have been reading my blog for a while you might remember one about a big festival in Cologne on November 11th. This blog is about the actual celebration of Karneval in Germany. So every year in the end of February Karneval is celebrated. It is the time before Ash Wednesday when people go crazy before they are supposed to fast. It starts on a Thursday they call Altweiber or Old Lady. This day kicks off carnival with women dressing up and cutting ties off men. At my job in the city hall the mayor threw a party to kick off the weekend. I attended the party with my coworkers and was actually interviewed for the news paper. It was pretty funny to see so many drunken old ladies at noon. Below is ... read more
