Europe April 20th 2009

This is the first opportunity I have had to update my blog! I have been traveling different parts of Europe the past two weeks! Well to start off I am happy to announce I passed the intensive German class!! The day I finished that exam I left for London with 3 friends I met in here. We left on a Friday, April 3rd and stayed until Tuesday. We tried to go cheaply with Ryanair which turned out to be such an annoying and LONG process!! We had to take a train to Frankfurt then catch a bus to the Frankfurt Hahn aiport, which is an old airport almost two hours from Frankfurt! We miscalculated how long it would take to get there and ended up having to take a 150 Euro taxi at the last minute ... read more

I can not believe I have been here for 5 weeks!! Time is going by so fast and there is so much I want to see and do before I leave! These past few weeks have been filled with school Monday through Friday, but thankfully this Friday is the exam for the German course!! I can't wait to be done! Next week I start my regular class schedule which includes my 2 economics courses. Next weekend I am going to London with 3 friends from my exchange group!! I am also going to visit a friend from a summer camp i worked at who lives near London! Let's see..last weekend was a blast! We went with our group of 30 people to Trier, the oldest city in Germany! We took a 4 hour train to Trier..Saturday ... read more

This week marks the half way point for my intensive German course and culture class!!! Only 3 more weeks until the regular semester begins! I asked the golden question on Thursday in class about attendance and our final grade and found out that we only have to go to 3 out of the 5 days to have full attendance!! I am going to try hard not to skip class knowing this, but it was exciting news! :-) This past week I booked my ticket to London with a couple of friends from my ISP group for the first weekend in April..it will be a great trip! As for this weekend..Friday was one of my friends birthdays so we ate at this realllllly good restaurant in Obrestad or our "Old Town." It's specialty is the auflauf, which ... read more

Well I am nearing the end of week 2 and starting to really love this place! The sun is finally staying out for more then a few minutes! Tuesday was warm enough that I didn't need my heavy coat!! But this week we started our full load of classes! They require us to do the German language course which is from 9-12:30 and then this week we started the German culture/conversation course which is from 2-5!! So for 4 more weeks it's going to be intense..almost like I'm in high school again! But it's amazing how much German I have learned in one week! One of the German language teachers speaks no english and so for 3 1/2 hours I hear fsldkjfjfdklafldne!! She also has said my name more ways then I thought were possible! I ... read more

Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia » Cologne February 28th 2009

Today our group got up at the crack of dawn to go to Cologne or "Köln." It is one of the largest cities in Germany and definitely one of the oldest. We had to take a 3 hour train ride to get there. During World War II it was bombed very badly and the only left in standing is this massive cathedral! It is a pretty amazing and LARGE building. We climbed to the very top which is something like 500 steps! It was quite the hike to the top, but totally worth it! Once at the top I could see the entire city which is located on the Rhine River. After that we went to this very German Brewery called the Colner Hofbrau which is famous for their Kolsch beer. Still not a big fan ... read more

I can finally say I am getting the hang of how things run in Marburg, Germany! I left Texas on Sunday, February 22nd and it was quite the experience just getting to my town. I flew into the Frankfurt airport, which let me say is HUGE, and take a train to get to Marburg. My plane ride over was actually not too bad...t was just undier 10 hours. I sat next to this married man from Norway, who was the first of many to point me in the right direction. Once I landed I had to take a bus to get to my train. I think i asked at least a dozen Germans if the spoke English and then if they could help me get to Marburg. Once on my train, I met my first ... read more
