Anschliessend ... read more

A giant hotel, a rocket research base and an elevator into the ocean When Ake has time off he sometimes travel without Emma. Emma is mostly OK with that as long as Ake visit places Emma has either been to already or she is not the slightest bit interested in visiting. This summer Ake went to Prora and Peenemünde two destinations which fit in the latter category. But Ake didn’t go on this trip on his own. He went there together with his mother, Britt-Marie, because she, unlike Emma, thought the abovementioned destinations sounded interesting. Prora and Peenemünde both are in the district Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the northeast part of Germany. This is a region which is easy to visit from Sweden since there are ferries linking southern Sweden with northern Germany. We just went with the ... read more

54 degrees North: part 0.3: The island of Rügen. Rügen is a fabulous island, with undulating its rolling hills suddenly ending in spectacular cliffs over the Baltic Sea. Sandy beaches run for miles, and close by are atmospheric lagoons (Bodden) , woods and little villages with thatched cottages. This is the land that first inspired Germany’s greatest romantic painter, Casper David Friedrich. If you catch the dialect there are Scandinavian* influences, and the place names and churches are frequently Slav* in origin. We had about six days to explore what we could and to relax – it was not enough time. We stayed in an apartment called Witte Hus in a hamlet called Polchow (*see what I mean!), by the Jasmunder Bodden. There is a garden there and we soon noticed were in time ... read more

I head out from Duvendiek to catch the train to Rügen from a nearby town, but realize I will miss it, and start heading to Stralsund. I approach the next town just as another train pulls in, and miss it as well, doh! Rather than wait an hour or two, I opt to cycle along the motorway on the dedicated path to Stralsund. The path is fast but unpicturesque. From there I get the train to Lietzow, which is the closest town to Kap Arkona along the train network. Kap Arkona the northernmost point of Rügen, and my destination for the day. From Lietzow the hilly path winds through a beautiful beech forest and then dips down to the coast, before turning slightly more inland through beautiful pastures and meadows towards Glowe. The path changed from ... read more

Ruegen - Germany's biggest island, located in the Baltic Sea. Although one is tempted to say it is cold and windy, that is not true during the summer. Crystal blue water, huge chalk cliffs, and small towns near the sea - so-called "Ostseebäder" invite you for a walk. For us, the little "long weekend trip" started on Wednesday (28.07.2010). The 6-hour-car ride made us pass the first "sight", the new "Ruegenbruecke" with its length of 2,831 meters. The bridge connects Stralsund and Ruegen. As we arrived at the campsite the beach next to it and the crystal-clear water were very appealing, so we went for a swim, and called it a day. Thursday, 29.07.2010 How nice was the weather the day before... Thursday's weather was challenging, but not yet in the morning. In the morning it ... read more
