Its a funny thing to come back to a place; you can leave it for years and years, and fail to give it any thought, yet when you do return, there's an instant connection. Things inevitably change in you, and there's bugger all you can do to stop it. Once you are back, you are back. I find myself reflecting on things I normally over look. Small things, little things. The colour of the leaf of a rose bush; the feel of the road as you drive along; the kind of look people are sporting in the supermarket. Most of all, I keep coming back to togetherness. I'm with my sister and my mother 24/7, we are constantly surrounded by old friends and family, and there's always something going on or about to take place. At ... read more

I'm restless all morning from when the day light begins to stream through the slits in the heavy outdoor blinds. I keep picking up my phone to calculate what time it is, but I cannot remember whether to add or subtract eight hours. 6am or 9am? I don't know and am unlikely to figure it out unless I find another clock, but I keep checking every ten minutes as though I might miraculously find an answer. I get up. I have to fiqure out the time. I've been nervous since last night because it's mothers' day today, and we don't have any flowers for mum yet. All the way from Braunschweig to Hannover last night, I was scanning the shop fronts and petrol stations in the hope of finding a bunch of flowers; not that I ... read more

Thursday 23 April Yesterday’s weather: Sun and 20 degrees! And we spent the whole day in the car. Racing on the Autobahn, where 130 km/hour are considered slow… Keep up with the pace! 600 km later we were in Bad Grund. Yes, K came up with the idea to see our “own” place again, Park Hotel Flora in Bad Grund, Harz. (See the entries from 9 and 11 of Mars ). The lovely hotel garden is now blooming, the food is great, the owner is lovely, so we decided to make it an extra day here. The woman who runs this place has now started up the kitchen for the season, and her husband is the chef. And he could really cook. So we are going there tonight again for their daily dinner with three courses. ... read more

So, yesterday I gave my first talk at TU Braunschweig and it went very well. Everyone was really nice and they really liked my work. I went to dinner with most of the students from the graphics lab. The city is really clean and friendly. I only took a couple photos, so I'll attach them on here (the first 2 on the page). This morning I got up and took 2 trains to get to Hannover. At first, I wasn't impressed with the city since it seemed dirtier than Braunschweig. For example, around the University EVERY single building had graffiti all over it. Also, the building(s) that contain the institute I visited today were kind of older and run down (not "old" in the cool European, many hundreds of years old sense...but old like 1960's old). ... read more

I had a good flight. It was a very long travel day. I got up at 5am, got to the airport and found there were no lines at all, so I had 2 hours to kill before my first flight. Then flew to Chicago (about 4 hour flight), and then had 4 more hours to kill at the airport there. I had lunch and sat on a bar stool and talked to random people who came and went. Then the 8 hour flight to Munich (and I still can't sleep on planes or anywhere that I'm sitting upright). Once in Munich it was the next morning and I had a little trouble figuring out how to buy a subway ticket to get to the main train station. Everyone speaks english if you speak to them, except ... read more

Bad Grund, Germany, still monday the 9th. Mostly we spent the day in the car. And mostly it was raining. These highways are really great. But they tend to be very, very, very long... We picked a little place not too far from the autobahn number 7 that we are travelling, and it turned out to be the oldest of twelve "Bergsstäddte", high up in the mountains. And now for people who like "kurort" and "gesundheit". "Bitte leuten", as it said on the sign, and we were in. Had an apartment for ourselves. The owner told us we were not alone at the hotel, but we daubt it. This is not the season for a "bergstadt". The winter just gone, and the spring.... no, they'll have to wait. And so do we. www.parkhotelflora.de In the restaurant "downtown", one ... read more

Im at the mill - An old watermill guest house where I worked and learnt germany over the last couple of years. The Mill is in a Beautiful Farmland area of Lower Saxony. I have some great friends here and Im allways so happy and relaxed to come back. It feels like home. A perfect place to research Africa. The sun is beautiful today. I can smell it. Spring is coming. Constantly at the computer but never seem to do anything useful. Mmm its white outside and too cold to go out any way. Besides I cant do much on crutches. Though my foot is almost better:) Im allready starting to leave the crutches behind. I even keep forgetting where I left them:) It feels so good to walk again after 6 weeks of slow motion. ... read more

In Berlin at the moment, figured I'd give a little update. The last few weeks have been just great! Christoph's family were the best hosts you could ask for and took me all over the town and fed me like crazy. ANDD this is good news for you guys, I got a new website for putting up pictures which allows me to add about 10 pictures at a time and works MUCH faster than putting up one picture every ten minutes as is the case with this blog. I'll put a link for the website at the bottom of this blog entry. But Berlin is the important one. This city is just amazing, it feels like its own little country. Charlie lives in West Berlin and it's always interesting when you enter East Berlin since you ... read more
