Thursday 23 April Yesterday’s weather: Sun and 20 degrees! And we spent the whole day in the car. Racing on the Autobahn, where 130 km/hour are considered slow… Keep up with the pace! 600 km later we were in Bad Grund. Yes, K came up with the idea to see our “own” place again, Park Hotel Flora in Bad Grund, Harz. (See the entries from 9 and 11 of Mars ). The lovely hotel garden is now blooming, the food is great, the owner is lovely, so we decided to make it an extra day here. The woman who runs this place has now started up the kitchen for the season, and her husband is the chef. And he could really cook. So we are going there tonight again for their daily dinner with three courses. ... read more

So, yesterday I gave my first talk at TU Braunschweig and it went very well. Everyone was really nice and they really liked my work. I went to dinner with most of the students from the graphics lab. The city is really clean and friendly. I only took a couple photos, so I'll attach them on here (the first 2 on the page). This morning I got up and took 2 trains to get to Hannover. At first, I wasn't impressed with the city since it seemed dirtier than Braunschweig. For example, around the University EVERY single building had graffiti all over it. Also, the building(s) that contain the institute I visited today were kind of older and run down (not "old" in the cool European, many hundreds of years old sense...but old like 1960's old). ... read more

Bad Grund, Germany, still monday the 9th. Mostly we spent the day in the car. And mostly it was raining. These highways are really great. But they tend to be very, very, very long... We picked a little place not too far from the autobahn number 7 that we are travelling, and it turned out to be the oldest of twelve "Bergsstäddte", high up in the mountains. And now for people who like "kurort" and "gesundheit". "Bitte leuten", as it said on the sign, and we were in. Had an apartment for ourselves. The owner told us we were not alone at the hotel, but we daubt it. This is not the season for a "bergstadt". The winter just gone, and the spring.... no, they'll have to wait. And so do we. www.parkhotelflora.de In the restaurant "downtown", one ... read more

Day 13 - Dortmund: The Shopping City Perhaps an unlucky day? The previous night, although I went to bed at 10, some of the others in the room (the two Irish gus) must have come in after midnight. As a result of that, the hot weather, and a snoring German, on Saturday I just wanted to sleep, so I stayed in bed 'til 9, missing breakfast, and then rushing to check out by 9.30. The train to Dortmund was packed, so I sat on the floor (probably still more comfortable than National Express!!) for the hour and a half journey. In Dortmund I had a cheese and ham roll, and went to the Youth Hostel. It seemed a lot 'rougher than the other hostels I had stayed at, possibly because it's not run by DJH so ... read more

... read more

After Amsterdam, let's go to Hannover where Chris was waiting for us to make visit his city, drink german beer and eat currywurst! Don't forget a great white wine with olives, typical german soup in the middle of the night..and what about the city and playing music from the sewerage! The city is full of contrast - typical german architecture and modern glass buildings. Incredible municipality and opera palaces and a city full of people! What about the sales when you want to buy everything, but in the middle of the trip, have a lack of money;))) And a great variety to choose clothes, even for such tall guys like PH! Nice and cosy city..... read more

We arrived in Hannover on the 18th after four days of cycling on the Fulda and Weser Rivers from Kassel to Hamlyn and over the Oldenberg to Hannover. We are staying with Andreas S in Hannover whom Ray met during his time here during Expo 2000. We meet up with Andreas in Hamlyn who cycles with us to Hannover. En route to Hannover we lunch at a Waldhotel named Holzmuehle - a hotel in the forest named woodmill, visit a museum in Coppenbruegge, and two cloisters, one with a broad view of the area south of Hannover. ... read more
