I had always wanted to make a return to a world cup match; my first, and to date, my only experience had been back in the summer of 1990, in Florence, Italy when the FIFA world cup came to town. 16 years later and here I am again! Frankfurt in Germany was the trip, and the visit of my friend Lee from the States was the reason. We had planned a trip from East Anglia, in England, across France, Germany and into Italy. Car problems and horrible traffic jams forced us to alter our plans, so we decided on staying in Germany at my other friends house, Mark, and see some of western Germany. Frankfurt was our main destination, and long walks through town during the day had revealed a lovely traditional German feel town. The ... read more

After much anticipation, I am finally here!!! We are staying at the "Stay and Learn" Hostel located conviniently right next to the central train station (well, and depends on your interest, right next to the red light district as well). But its a great place... quite clean and quite well organized. We actually got a semi-private bathroom with our room too, and its surprisingly new as well. I must say, when we got here, we didn't really know what to expect or how to get around. And we didnt have to. Everywhere we go, if people see us with our maps and looking confused, we were offered help to get back onto the right track. Its great! However, I must confess I am still not sure how to get around here by train or bus... it ... read more

I got to exprience a world cup soccer game on June 13th, 2006 in Frankfurt Germany. The game was Togo VS Korea at 3p local time. Me and my friend arrived that day the game started and first figured out how to get to the game via public transit. As on the ticket it advised that you had free public transit all day on the subways/public transit all day. The problem was trying to figure out the public transit which was all in German. The crowds were crazy going from the subway to the game were rediculas as the stop to the stadium was a 5 to 10 min walk. Along the way to the stadium they had lots of illegal venders selling country flags, shirts and memorbelia. On the ticket it said to enter in ... read more

AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!!!! OI OI OI!!!! What an experience!!!! We woke up early, dressed in our green and gold, carried our flags and made our way to to the train station. There weren't many at the station nearest to us, but as soon as we got to the main station we were surrounded by both Aussies and Japanese! What a buzz! We were lucky to get a German info guy to help us buy tickets to Kaiserslautern. Ended up costing 54 Euro to get to Kaiserslautern from Frankfurt. That cost more than our tickets (45 Euros)!!! We grabbed some brekkie from Maccas and then ran onto the train to K-town. WOAH! All the Japanese fans had seats and the Aussies didn't! Guess they had planned ahead and made their reservations months ago! Some Aussies (like me) ... read more

After finishing up at the Heineken Factory yesterday we caught the tram to the city centre, had lunch at Maccas (don't worry I had a salad this time not another burger!) and did some souvenir shopping. We then caught the bus back to the hotel to collect our luggage and took a transfer to the airport. Checked in and ready to go, we watched the Holland vs Serbia & Mont game at the sportsbar in the airport. One big orange family! Seated on the small KLM plane we were surrounded by soccer fans! The plane ride took about an hour from Amsterdam to Frankfurt. Arriving in Frankfurt, we took a taxi to the hotel (about 20 mins away). Frankfurt is clean and very modern. It's not what we were expecting at all! Arriving at the hotel ... read more

Guten tag. I am here! The games start in less than 12 hours! I am a very overpriced hostel and about to go to the airport to collect my brother and friends Jeff and Cory. As a result, this entry is going to be quite short, and I just know I'm going to forget something. Still, you'll get the picture. Travel update: The past days I've been in Bologna, Italy except yesterday I trained to Venice then bussed to the airport then flew to near Frankfurt then bussed to Frankfurt proper. I will be running around with my brother and friends in a matter of hours! Tales: After Venice, I to a train with Laura to Bologna. The town houses the oldest university in Europe dating back to the 11th century. It is well known for ... read more

I didn’t make many friends when I woke everyone at 6:00 am, but we had a busy day ahead of us. I hate to admit it, but I get kind of hyper in these situations. When there’s a situation requiring my absolutely having to be there at a set time, I over-react and try to get there long before I need to. Our flight wasn’t scheduled to leave Frankfurt until 12:05 but I try to observe the airlines’ recommendation that you get there three hours before departure. If there is a cancellation or a heavily-booked flight, I like to be at the top of the list for boarding compensation and/or re-routing. According to Mappy.com, our hotel was about an hour from the airport. I also allowed half an hour for refueling the car and car rental ... read more
