One of the advantages of being a traveller and a woman of leisure is of course that you can do really time wasting things like watching TV all day or lying on the beach from dawn to dusk because you have the luxury of time. And so I decided when the soccer world cup began that I would watch all 64 games or at least attempt to. Having been deprived of quality soccer (I dont think I offend anyone by stating that you can hardly call the Knights quality soccer) for more than 6 years and of course being the soccer fan I am, I was more than excited at the propect of drinking beer and watching soccer every night with my dad and various friends. In these times of terrorism and the increasing divide between ... read more

I have to say, it is so much easier to speak in German today than it was even yesterday, not to mention when I first arrived. I know I'm still screwing up a lot of grammar all the time, but my vocabulary has expanded rapidly and I feel more comfortable putting together sentences. That said, it's still not a possibility (unmoeglichkeit) for me to express anything at all complicated. Its really sort of fun though, at break I stood around with David and tried to tell him about my research interest in the history of sex workers and then he told me about a friend of his who is studying a related topic--this brief exchange probably took 2 or 3 minutes to complete, without going into any detail at all. And we were using the term ... read more

Due to the World Cup and all that, pickings were slim when it came to finding lodging in Berlin. Devan eventually discovered the Eastern Comfort Hostelboat floating in the river just on the western side of what remains of the Berlin Wall. Very cool. As you approach the boat you wander down along a stretch that runs along the river bank. Unlike the more touristy sections of wall, this one hasn't been picked down to the rebar by souvenir hungry tourists (Interesting note: the sections of wall that are most commonly seen have actually been themselves walled off to keep tourists away. Ironic?). Eventually you come to a breach in the wall through which you can see the psuedo-beach bar surrounded by a picket fence (our neighborhood tavern which due to their choice of music, we ... read more

Evening: Well, Germany lost, I'll spare the details. Oddly enough, no one at the little Shawarma place and neighboring hipster bar where I watched the game seemed to care that much. I heard all this cheering and fireworks down the street--Italian fans? And people are driving around, honking their horns. I met a woman at the bar (a contact improvisation dancer who does Body Mind Centering, a form of body work founded in Western Mass where I went to school--the world really does seem weirdly small sometimes!). She said that all the German flags are very strange in Germany, especially in Berlin (which she described as particularly "alternative"), because Germans tend to eschew national identity "out of shame over WWII." She said she thinks the flags and the public pride is a sort of healing experience ... read more

My German teacher is Oliver Dietrich, a very soft spoken man, skinny, with glasses. He has a hard time getting anyone's attention, its kind of sad. Some of the students were annoyed with him because they felt the lesson was too simple. It was--we started with numbers and the alphabet!!! But, it seemed like just a very brief overview of the very basics, I assume we'll advance quickly. I felt a little sorry and protective of the poor guy because of everyone's complaints! The other students are from France, Switzerland, Italy, Turkey, Ecuador, Libya, Jordan, Georgia, and the U.S. There is a strange congruency among several of the students from the U.S.--4 of us are grad students, 2 in history and 2 in art history! A fifth is from San Diego (where I grew up) and ... read more

Well, this is long overdue. It´s the 4th of July today, but I´ll be sharing with you my short time in another country, Germany. For a week in late June I visited the captial of Berlin for some world cup soccer madness and hoped for a taste of the growing art scene shaping in East Berlin. Taking a small gamble, I lined up a room via craiglist from a guy named Johannes in Prenzlauer Berg. It worked out wonderfully and while I spent 30 euro a night, i heard from some very frustrated americans that they were spending 125 euro a night, a block down, in a 2 star holetel. Prenzlauer is to Berlin what Williamsburg is to New York. It´s very trendy with unique clothing shops, cafes, etc. Quite a few hipsters deutsche, but I ... read more

Germany's penalty-kick expulsion of Argentina, along with France's astounding outclassing of Brazil, has left the 2006 World Cup with four semifinalists from the same continent. This has not occurred since 1982. England lost in typically English fashion, and Italy breezed by an outmatched Ukraine. So, England and Argentina join Switzerland as teams to go home undefeated (a "loss" or a "win" from penalty kicks is technically a tie). Switzerland may be the only team ever to leave a World Cup having never conceded a goal (and perhaps also the only never to score in a penalty shoot-out). Italy is clearly the "evil" team remaining, given their penchant for diving, which means of course that Germany might go home...er, stay home. One of Germany's best midfielders might be suspended for participating in the mini-brawl that followed the ... read more

Do you know what the worst thing is about losing your luggage? It's not the lack of clothing (I worked in the same coffee bean t-shirt 5 days a week without washing). It's not even the lack of deodorant (we spend most of our time on cramped, sweaty, people-smelling undergrounds). It's the lack of Q-tips. Do you know how hard it is to go off the Q when you've been hiding a 2-tip a day habit for the last decade? Oh my God, my ears have never been so itchy. You start to go a little crazy with the withdrawals. You start thinking, if I just wrapped a little toilet paper around this paperclip... Drop the habit kids; before it gets you too. On another topic, we did eventually get our bags back (today we fly ... read more

God, Berlin is so hot! There don't seem to be fans or air conditioners anywhere and it is just broiling in this internet cafe and in all the subways. But enough bitching! Today I took my placement exam at the Goethe Institut. In a way it was sort of fun--I got to meet some of the Goethe Institut staff and take a peek at some of the students. The people I talked to were all _really_ nice and friendly. The other students were a remarkably hip looking bunch--hard to tell where they are all from, but not too many appeared to be obviously American (which I'm glad about!). The placement test part of it was less exhilerating, and actually rather discouraging as it made me realize (again) how much work I have to do. But, that's ... read more

Morning, drinking a cup of coffee in the living room. Not quite sure what time it is--maybe 6 or 7 am? Listening to the BBC--wow, I just got distracted because they announced that France beat Brazil, knocking them out of the world cup! Germany, France, Portugal and Italz will plaz each other next in the semi-finals. I need to find out when Germanz is playing next. If Germany wins again people are going to go crazy. I can see how this mania is contagious!... read more
