Rennes, the capitol city of the Brittany region of France was an amazing place to visit. We did a walking tour to its main areas of interest, winding through the old cobbled streets and it's half timbered mediaeval houses. We were fortunate to be there on Saturday when their huge farmers market, one of France's biggest, was on and what a display! The stalls were bursting with so many kinds of meat, cheeses, breads and seafood! We sampled the local speciality which is a sausage with cheese and onion wrapped in a buckwheat pancake and cooked in front of you. Delicious! During our walk, however, we were approached by beggars at least five times and all of them looked fit and healthy to us. We are just not used to it in NZ. There are literally ... read more

The Gasthof Zum Hirschen was a wonderful hotel, we wished we could have stayed longer. Dinner last night and breakfast this morning were sensational. We also found a much longer road down to the canal which would have made the climb up yesterday bareable. Back on the canal for the morning stint and it's very quite, eerily so. No wind, hardly a ripple on the water and no barges, in fact no barges since Bamberg. We spoke to one person who said the water level is too low for the big barges. The big locks are not manned. You have to book ahead for locks to be operated for you. It really was like a ghost canal, but still very scenic. We had our morning break at a sleepy little town where we found a shop ... read more

The last few days we have been cruising down the Rhine and Main rivers. Now we enter the Main Canal, built to join the Rhine and Danube. We have stopped at some lovely German cities and towns and enjoyed the sights and sounds but the summer has deserted us. We have had some sunshine but the temperature has only been in the low 20s and we have had lots of rain. On Thursday, we had an interesting glass blowing demonstration on board the ship and then in the afternoon we were bussed to the small town of Miltenberg. Here we had a tour of the main areas and admired the wooden buildings. We stopped for a wine at one of the many outdoor cafes although the showers returned then back to the ship. That evening there was ... read more

If we could have spent another day (or two) in Nuremberg we would have but Istanbul waits for no-one. We had breakfast early, packed up and then did the relay down the 3 flights of stairs (53 steps) with our gear. It's almost become a joke when we turn up with all our gear, ask if there is a lift (usually no) and then see what floor our room is on. On the bright side, there were four floors of the Hotel Central City and we were only on 3! It was a bit of a slow get away, Jeff went to lube his chain, then couldn't find it (the lube not the chain). A journey back up the 53 steps to see if it was left in the room and, alas, not. He did manage ... read more

Move over Gent, here comes Nuremburg. Wow, just Wow! Rest day today and I spent it doing a self guided walk I found on "The Flashpacker" which took in the major sites of Old Town. Nuremberg was part of the Roman Empire and was where the emperor would come on his holidays. The city is completely surrounded by an intact huge stone wall and the Imperial Castle stands on top of the hill at one end presiding over Old Town. Not only is the wall that surrounds the city intact, so is the outer wall which surrounds that. While some of it was destroyed by bombing in WWII it has been rebuilt seamlessly since then. I could go on about the semi-wooden houses done in an eclectic mix of colours, the towers, the churches, the fountains, ... read more

Today is our last day on the Main River. We ride from the very beautiful town of Bamberg to the history filled city of Nuremberg. The day's forecast is for rain again, starting mid morning and continuing for most of the day. We hit the road at about 8:15am and while not raining there is a definite chill in the air today. As is our norm we start off very slowly, winding our way out of whatever town we're in. Just a way to warm up the legs and ease into a new day. The first few hours are dry at least. We end up riding on the canal most of the way rather than the Main River. We think this is the continuation of the canal that we will follow from Nuremberg that will take ... read more

I woke a few times overnight and heard the air conditioner going, then I remembered we didn't have one, which meant it was raining persistently overnight. And the morning was no different. We left around 8:30am with the rain still falling. At least it wasn't too cold. The forecast predicted rain for most of the day with a chance of thunder storms. Not ideal. The day was meant to be all on the river today. We made good time considering the conditions and had ridden 23 of our 60kms by 10am when we rode into a town and spotted a coffee shop. We figured we could use a coffee (and cake as it turned out) and stopped for our morning break - probably for longer than we should have but it was dry inside. Jeff was ... read more

The Bike Lodge Hotel had everything a cyclist staying overnight needed, including washing machines and driers which we were in dire need of. Washing clothes in showers and basins only gets things so clean. As soon as we hit the room we filled a bag with clothes (including the days riding clothes) and took them down to set on a wash cycle and then back to the room to relax. Some time later an alarm went off and persisted. After about 10 minutes there was a knock at our door. The manager was there saying that an alarm on one of our bikes (mine) was going off. With horror I realised I hadn't taken my alarm fob out of my pocket before throwing my shorts into the wash. It must have shorted and set off the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Lohr am Main July 30th 2023

Today we left Ascaffenburg and the Main River to travel overland to Lohr. We have a number of hills today so we need our climbing legs on, something we haven't used for at least 2 weeks. There is no warm up, we leave town and head up. It's actually a very consistent grade of about 4 to 5% but it does go on for about 3.5kms. The climb wasn't too bad and it certainly got the legs warmed up and the ride down the other side was certainly fun - but this was just the entree. With only 200m climbed we still had the big climb ahead of us. We are both using Google Maps for navigation today but mine keeps wanting to re-route no matter what I do - driving me crazy!. We decide to ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Berchtesgaden July 30th 2023

After a week of relaxation in Bratislava and Graz, I felt sufficiently rested and recuperated to tackle my next multi-day hike through the mountains; and where better to do so than the Bavarian Alps? So after leaving my dear friend Kathi in Graz (where we'd had storms every day) and taking the train to Salzburg, I was up early the next day to take a 45-minute bus ride across the border to Berchtesgaden NP, nestled in the extreme southeastern corner of Germany. The plan was to do a 47km loop hike (known as the Watzmanntour) that starts and finishes at the park's most prominent lake (the Königssee) whilst first climbing - and then circling - its most prominent mountain (the Watzmann). By staying in mountain huts (and one 'Nature Friend House') along the way, I could ... read more
