Sorry to send out this blog so soon after our blog from Amsterdam, but since it is done we thought it was important to get back on track. And for our true fans who just can’t get enough…we’ll feed your addiction just this once. We leave for Venice tomorrow so expect our blog on Salzburg soon as well… As we travel through the cloudy German/Austrian country side from Munich to Salzburg via train with the alps not so far in the distance, it is hard not to think back on the incredible journey we have had over the last 18 days. What seemed daunting at first, now has become reasonable and, dare I say, “normal.” But as we pass each German sounding city that they announce over the loud speaker, I am reminded that we ought ... read more

What an interesting few days, and each was certainly very different from the other. My first day was spent almost purely in transit from Venice to Munich. I got a quick haircut in Venice too before I took the train, my first since leaving Canada. The barber didnt speak English, but my passport photo is very recent, and was taken the same day as I got a haircut, perfect! I just showed him it and said "like this", he did a fantastic job. The trainride from Venice to Munich....wow....speechless. That was easily the most beautiful trainride I have been on yet, right through Innsbruck and the Austrian Alps. Too beautiful. I arrived in Munich around 2030, rather late. Luckily the hostel I had booked myself into was only 50 metres from the train station, a very ... read more

Hello to all! Wish I could say it is nice and warm here, but its overcast and cool. Maybe it will be better in Vienna. We were planning on getting on a train and going to Salzberg, but we missed it so we will just go on to Vienna. Munich was very good to us. I ended up getting my bag although I packed a lot of warm clothes so I am still kinda stinky! Friday we went on a really geat bike tour and saw a lot of Munich sites and learned some history. We went to a beer garden in the English Garden(it is called English because it was all planned out). I have some great pictures and will try to post them today if I can. A guy that we met on the ... read more

So the keyboards here are all different so sorry if these get funky at times... Our train ride last night was ok. Better than the plane. I woke at 5:45am, still not used to the time change. We arrived in Munich at 9am and found our hotel easily. The guy at reception informed me that the airport had called and they had found my bag...good and bad news. I was really looking forward to new clothes! But also don't want to waste the time shopping. I can't beleive I just said that! Rephrase: I didn't want to spend the time buying things that I had chosen and packed so carefully just days before. Okay so good news, so we headed out into the city, and found some beer and got really trashed...just kidding! It is much ... read more

Sorry for the delay in the update, last night I spent a lot of time at the hostel trying to find a place to stay in Venice (we leave for a night train to Venice in 2 hours), so I didn't get a lot of time to update. Yesterday we went to the Dachau concentration camp, which was very interesting and took a lot longer than we thought it would take, mostly because it was a lot bigger than we thought. It was very depressing and it made the rest of the day a bit sadder. After that we came back to Munich and walked around for a while. We went to the Marienplatz, a square by the old city hall which houses a very large cuckoo type clock, and we also saw a bunch of ... read more

First an orientation tour of Munich including the Glockenspiel and Marienplatz. Perhaps, an opportunity to go white-water rafting after lunch then head for Contiki's own Gasthof in the beautiful Austrian Tyrol. White water rafting today !!! Was so excited I could hardly sleep, kept waking up from 4.30 onwards thinking it was time to get up. Got up at 7 and had a shower, then heasded downstairs for breakfast. Took our bags to the coach in the rain, then made our way into the city. Walked up to Marionplatz, trying not to get too wet. Wandered around the shops for a bit, then met Amanda at 9.30 to go Birkenstock shopping. There were so many colours and styles, and they're so cheap compared to home. Bought some fuschia t-bar ones, and Amanda and Gill got ... read more

Yesterday was a lot of fun biking in the Alps albeit once again, quite dangerous flying down gravel paths. Pretty much anything fun here involves danger but it was a good time, canyoning was my favorite sport that I did here. But after 4 days I was once again ready to head off somewhere new, and less expensive. Switzerland was ridiculously expensive, no seriously really really expenisive. We got up at 6am this morning after not going to sleep until around 2am after passing around a bottle of Jager with some of the other people at the hostel but i wanted to make the 7am train to Munich. Actually it was pretty sweet because we just slept at the hostel without paying last night because theres no room keys or anything and so many people work ... read more

We said goodbye to Paris, on the 13th, and boarded a comfortable, second class French carriage on a train heading for Munich. In Germany, at Mannheim, we had to change to another train. We noted that this train left precisely on time - give or take 10 seconds or so. Unfortunately, our faith in German efficiency was soon to be destroyed. Our train broke down and we had to disembark and wait for the next train, at a small station 10 minutes outside of Stuttgart. The next train was overcrowded and we could not get on. We did manage to board the one after that, but had to endure 2 hours sitting on our bags next to the toilet. Thankfully a German Theology student took us under her wing. We could not understand any of the ... read more

We have all spent much of the past several weeks -- actually starting at the beginning of the year, as the front reached Bavaria early in 1945 with the extension of the aerial bombing campaign -- remembering the end of the German Grab at Global Dominion (sometimes referred to as the First and Second World Wars). Setting out from Munich, the trip to each event was shorter than the one before, as the front moved south during those weeks. The remembrances reached a kind of crescendo in the end of April with the commemorations of the liberations of Bavaria's two concentration camps, Dachau and Flossenbuerg, and Bavaria's major cities, and then concluded with three different observations of the end of the war on May 8. Throughout this process, mainstream politicians and commentators have been generally responsible ... read more
