Ladies and gents, boys and girls, dogs, cats, birds, snakes… I didn’t do a damn thing but shop in Munich. I have no pictures for you. I have no cultural insights, unless you want to count the observations about today’s über-consumer society (of which I was right there playing a part). I hope I didn’t let you down too much. Know this: it was rainy and gross most of the 30 hours we were actually out of Coburg. It went like this: Tine, a girl from our Resopal competition project, was going that way anyhow in a rented station wagon, which was more than big enough for the 4 of us. Tine ‘had’ to stop at Ikea on the way, and I didn’t realize (though I should have) that Ikea has a small Swedish specialty food ... read more

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls: I have not fallen off the face of the earth… I’ve been busy. Gasp!! As hard as that may be to believe, you all know the saying that when it rains it pours, and I have long had the premonition that my severe lack of work at the beginning of my stay would result in its coming back to bite me in the tuchus later on. So where on earth do I begin? For starters, it’s SPRING. ‘Bout damn time. We’ve had a lot of rainy days over the last 2 ½ weeks since you last heard from me… I saw some god-awful big snails, the kind that make you grimace in disgust. Sadly, I didn’t have my camera on hand, so I can’t share the face-making experience with you. ... read more

No way. I actually began classes... over a week ago, now! I know, I know, my medal’s in the mail. But the past 10 days have been action-packed. The first day that I finally had courses scheduled, I actually had two classes overlapped, and I had to duck out of my “Studying and Working Abroad” in favor of attending a meeting about my Melitta design project I’ll be working on for the next 6 or 8 weeks. Yes, friends, that first class *is* being taught in English, and I would tell you more about it, but… I didn’t get to stay and hear about it myself. The Melitta project is a for-real-life thing, which is much more motivating than the for-practice-cause-it’s-good-for-your-health things I usually have at K-State. About 12 people in the product design discipline are ... read more

Easter. Oh, my, I never would have guessed that an entire country could go on vacation all at once, but leave it to Germans to do the unthinkable, because here, every half-way important Catholic celebration is a bank holiday, too. Translation: Good Friday everything is closed. Saturday morning, it all opens back up, from 8 am to 2pm. Then everything closes again until Tuesday morning. And *I* returned to “school” (I’ll use that term loosely) to find that… hey, I have Easter break, and I didn’t really miss any more than about 2 classes all week, anyway! Let me break it down for ya: officially, classes began on March 15th. For my particular major of Interior Architecture, that did not mean “classes,” that meant “presentations of final projects from last semester.” I don’t have any of ... read more

After another appalling amount of beer and a much later night than we should have had at Sonderbar, we hopped over to Leipzig via the url=http://www.bahn.de/-S:PtVOR9:dwVeDNNNnqLvFNNNNNdM/pv/view/int_guest/subhome/international_guests.shtmltrain, checked into our super cool hostel and went a-sightseein’. We were s’posed to have a plan, but didn’t, thought it ended up being better after all. The town is small enough that all the major attractions are concentrated within walking distance, and large enough to have some good life to it. The Nikolaikirche was staggering, and the Stasi Museum was unbelievable for different reasons. ... read more

My, my, have I been busy. I bet you’re thinking I finally went to school… nope. What did happen was a full-fledged vacation. Yes again. Like I needed it, I know. But John came all the way from dinky ol’ Manhattan, Kansas to visit, and only for a week, so I couldn’t very well keep him cooped up in Coburg, an also relatively dinky town. Now, I have to explain here, there was a third traveling companion, and it might get confusing, because his name is Jon. Without the ‘h.’ So, there we were, John, Jon and Rachel, all ready for adventure. After the boys got their fill of Bavarian beer (the same day they arrived… ew) and a full night’s sleep, we went into town, to the Markt to partake of some tasty Coburger Bratwursts, ... read more

Folks, can you believe it? Here I am, the 16th of March, and I still have no classes. I swear I am not bragging, because in lieu of classes I’ve been trying to fill my free time with interesting activities. The unfortunate part about this is that said activities often cost money, a resource that is not what I’d call the most plentiful (what with paying the deposit and rent on the dorm room, getting groceries, and Ikea did throw a few punches to the monetary situation). Who’da thunk I’d be begging for school work? I’m still waiting to sign up for my classes, if you can believe it, but all the Interior Architecture students I’ve talked to here assure me that everything is perfectly normal and I have no reason to be concerned. Much like ... read more

Orientation for school began this week, and I thought my brain was going to shrivel up and fall out my ear from all the paperwork and trying to communicate in German. All 8 of us newly arrived finally met each other on Monday the 8th where we promptly started filling out residency permits, school enrollment papers, and any manner of other forms, none of which I really understood, so I kind of hope I didn’t sign my soul over to the devil, or anything drastic like that. The eight of us hail from a nice assortment of places: KSU, of course, Mexico (Raúl, from Ikea), Italy, Lithuania and Czech Republic. And we, of course, do not have any one language in common; it’s mostly split that the North Americans all know English, and the Europeans all ... read more

I finally made it to school, the whole real reason for this voyage of mine. Nice to know I apply myself from time to time, isn’t it? There was a bit of uncertainty about my move in date, but it ended up being the first of March after all. See, Germans can say one thing and mean another when it comes to legal matters, and no one really checks them, because it’s small and unimportant in the long run. So when all the early correspondence I got from the school gave me the impression that my dorm room would be mine on the first of March, I purchased plane tickets (way back in early November). I was a little frazzled when I found out, about a month before departure, that I might be homeless for a ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Coburg February 20th 2005

oh, where to begin with it all? ...Arrival to Germany was complicated by a few things. Like overseas traveling isn't enough by itself to put someone over the edge, Melissa and I were both nauseous during parts of the trip to Coburg, which made jetlag even more uncomfortable. Then there was the ordeal of retrieving our luggage. Frankfurt airport is not a very user friendly airport, we found out the hard way, and it took us nearly an hour to claim our luggage. By that time we had missed the train we had intended to take to meet Esther in Würzburg, and we still had to get train tickets! Suffice to say it was a bit hellish. We finally made it though, to Würzburg, and then on to our new home, Coburg. It’s a lovely little ... read more
