We were determined to get one true hike in during this portion of our trip. The Stuttgart hikes while nice did not actually hit the points of intention and getting lost prevented a full loop completion. We had until our train left at 13:00 to get this done. We picked out the Bad Urach Falls located 37 minutes outside of Tubingen. Fritz and Lea thought we were NUTS for squeezing in one more thing, but when has that stopped us before... 5:30 AM alarms went off and 6:15 we were on the road (the car return time was by 9:00 AM). We found the place pretty easy...check 1. It was still dark and after looking at 4 different signs and having the parking meter eat our money we were still no more certain on where to ... read more

Shelby decided to be a champion today and drive a manual car in order to visit castles today. We visited Lichtenstein Castle and Hohenzollern Castle. The Lichtenstein Castle was built into a rock cliff above the city in the valley. It was never taken over, but was ruined through age until a royal family decided to build a hunting lodge on site using some of the original ruins. It then was expanded on the premise of a poem written by a family member and meant to replicate the old castle style. My favorite thing about this castle was the family who restored the grounds actually still live on the premise throughout the year. We took a tour of the castle which was completely in German but God looked down on us and had a nephew interpreting ... read more

We went to Tobingen to meet a friend of Shelby's who was a foreign exchange student at Royalton. Fritz and Lea were kind enough to let us stay with them for the weekend. Fritz is in dentistry school and Lea is studying English at university. They showed us around Tobingen (it wasn't bombed during WWII due to what they think was a British liking to the town). The town square is incredibly old and looks like the ski lodges we try to create only real. They exposed us to "real" Kabobs which I jokingly teased Fritz about them only being a gyro. We had good conversations about their school system, immigration, American views on politics and world politics, and our recent trip to museums in Berlin. The one thing driving me nuts was there were no ... read more

We arrived in Stuttgart as a stopping point on our way to visit Fritz. There didn’t seem to be a ton to do directly in the city of Stuttgart, but it had a lot of parks to walk around the next day in the surrounding area. The one thing we wanted to attempt is going to the highest point of the city (Birkenkopf). This is 511 m and is near city center. It is the highest point in the city is they took the ruins and rubble from the buildings during WWII and piled them to create the top of the hill. We had recently been talking about what cities did with all their destroyed buildings so it seemed ironic to end up in a city who had used its ruins. We had heard of others ... read more

Kehl is across the Rhine from Strasbourg. Kehl and Strasbourg share the history of this area with both being affected by the activity first to create France and Germany and then to see which of those countries would 'own' either or both of the cities. Kehl has always been smaller and has been treated at times as a suburb of Strasbourg, during the periods when both have been in the same country. In fact, it was a suburb of Strasbourg during the Second World War after the Battle of France. With the formation of the European Union, though, the relations between the neighbours are becoming more 'normal'. The tram now runs from Strasbourg to Kehl. At this stage it ends just across the bridge across the Rhine but there are plans for extension. We decided to ... read more

A very fancy slippery dip in Kehl Square is also a reminder of Year 12 German class when we studied Die Verwandlung (made no sense to a 16-year-old and put me off Kafka forever)

We’ve gotten into a bit of a routine. Everyone kind of wakes up on their own and does their own morning routine and once everyone in’s fully awake we move out and start our day of sight seeing. This morning Cheryl and I wanted a Diet Coke so we walked down to the village center with Connor (Lori’s son). He is 10th grade and goes to a high school on the Army base. It was nice chatting with him to and from the bakery. Makes me miss the boys. I could picture myself chatting with them as we walk the neighborhood. On the agenda (that’s what Mandy calls the itinerary) we are going to eat breakfast at a Chocolate factory, shop at the Birkenstock Outlet, visit a castle and going to eat at fun German Restaurant. ... read more

Day 3 Leinfelden, Germany When we rented the car yesterday Mandy joked with the attendant and said, ‘we have to walk to the car? You aren’t going to bring it to us?’ She laughed at her and said, ‘This isn’t the US, honey, this is Germany the home on no service.’ Ha! Yep, that pretty much sums up our experience with Germans so far. I think Jason (Lori’s husband) explained it well when he told us that Germans think they are being polite by leaving you alone. We got to Lori’s neighborhood and it is so cute. I find it a little weird that there are shutters on the outside of the house. After being in Lori’s house I can assume it’s because of the way the windows all tilt out. The shutters just remind me ... read more

Today started like our previous days, we woke up around 7:30 or so, did our morning duties, went down for another decent breakfast in the hostel, climbed in our car and away we went. Today we planned on checking out Lauda-Konigshofen, about 40 kilometers away. I had found a map showing a walking tour of the town with about 20 or so sights, but hadn't printed it out, figuring it wouldn't be clear/big enough to read. We also figured we could pick one up at the town's tourist information center. Well, first of all, although I knew Lauda-Konigshofen was two towns more or less joined together, I didn't realize the two parts were that far apart, or that the only Tourist Information Center, in Lauda, we found we be so small with so few pamphlets. We ... read more

This morning we woke up again around 7:30, went down for breakfast, then headed out for some more sightseeing. We'd decided yesterday that we'd like to see/tour the Lindleinturm Museum. It looked so cool, being a tiny house sitting on the top of a section of medieval-looking wall, but it had been closed when we arrived Thursday, only opening for limited hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Rather than drive down into town and try to find a proper parking spot nearby, we just walked down. Sure enough, it was open, and there were no other people waiting. That is important, since they only allow 6 people in at a time, its that small! We climbed the first short flight of stairs to find an older German lady sitting there waiting for us. When she found out ... read more

We woke up around 7:30 this morning, then headed downstairs for our included breakfast. There was one other guest there, a middle-aged German guy walking about 100 kilometers as part of his annual hiking vacation. Breakfast consisted of cereal, some assorted meats, cheeses, and breads, along with coffee. After a leisurely breakfast I brought our luggage down to the car while Manoli settled the bill. We actually accepted the place and spent the night there, without having any real idea how much it would cost. It turned out to be 60 Euros, about what I'd expected. By this time it was around 9am, so we headed out in the car to find the Herrgottskirche and the Thimble Museum or Fingerhutmuseum. We knew the Thimble Museum didn't open until 10am, and found out when we arrived that ... read more
