Sooo, I have been in France for nearly a week now ;) Take a look at the pics I have up so far... I might be changing them somewhat frequently since I have a limit of 50 pics, which I will exhaust eventually. Anyway, I think I will keep it pithy for now. Some random things: Good food is pretty cheap here, which is a plus! The toilets have been hard to master. The French teachers have been out of this world! They are very understanding and entertaining. My civ prof calls us mes amis américains, which means my american friends, in light of ww2. Alors, à la prochaine!... read more

After many experiences of miscommunication I finally felt French today. I walked home from the subway from a hard days work (lunch in Monmartre with friends and decorating an friend's apartment) and as I walked I stopped and bought flowers for my room, a little baguette, cheese, fruit and wine. And as I walked it began to rain, so I just whipped out my umbrella and strutted home, it was pretty great. What were these miscommunications prior to my day of French perfection? I went to the grocery store for the first time to buy necessities for my place and filled up my basket to the brim. I got to the cashier and she looked at me like I was crazy. Not so kindly she told me I needed to weigh my fruits and veggies. This ... read more

Before we left Brazil Fernando had schedule to meet his university friend in Toulouse. We would rent a car and travel around. As we arrived Claudia was waiting for us at the train station. We spend the night in her place drinking wine and laughing about stories on French habits. What would be normal for us latter, was funny at the beginning. The first day we drove to Marseilles, were Flavia joined us. From there, our destination was Cote d'Azur: Nice, Cannes, San Tropez and Monaco. Getting close to Monaco the fun was to compare our small rented Fiat Panda with the local cars. Maseratis, Ferraris, Austin Martins, Lamborghinis all kinds of million dollars cars filling the streets. In the harbor the yachts looked more like luxury hotels than ships. From the deck the owners radio ... read more

We arrived in Cherbourg late morning to find it was a very hot day. Didn't want to waste any time, so after a brief spell of shopping for baguettes and cheese, we started driving to Cannes. The day grew hotter and hotter until it became positively unfomfortable, especially as there was no airconditioning in our camper. Iona started getting really irritable as her ankles had already swollen to cricket ball size. But otherwise it was great driving through all those pretty villages and we spent the night outside Dijon. Up in the hills it was cooler so the night was bearable. We were almost at Rives where we were to spend the night with friends, when the camper broke down! What chaos! It was hot as hell, and Tony and Devron went around looking for a ... read more

I have found an apartment! I am living in this great neighborhood a 5 min. walk from Place d'Italie in the 13th. My situation is to live rather closely with a French roommate who is a financial analyst for RCA. She is GREAT. I moved in yesterday and there was a note on the door, which said "Welcome Home!" She sleeps on a futon in the living room while I have the bedroom, a bit odd yes, but working fine so far! She has had students from my program for the last 3 years and they all have left her fluent! Here's hoping. On my walk home from the metro there are the following vendors: bread, flowers, cheese, meat, fish, fruit and veggies, and a supper market!!! Perfect. I am out of the center of Paris, ... read more

The monkey is off my back! I finally got around to taking the big trip...Paris and Rome packed into a single week. Now I can get back to general weekend laziness and sleeping until ungodly hours of the mid-afternoon! So that I can light up both France and Italy on the little TravelBlog map, and so that both you and I don't get totally bored with an epic blog entry, I'll split the 'Big One' into two entries. Just to preface this whole massive 2-blogger of a vacation, let me first say that the last week was probably the most strenuous 'vacation' I've ever taken. Work seemed like a cake walk this last week... Saturday: Kat lands at noon in Schipol and we're off to Amsterdam to visit the Van Gogh museum. Really cool, but the ... read more

How now brown cow (from Nice), Life is tough on the French Riviera. We caught the fast train from Paris, passing through the French countryside (Lyon, Provence) arriving in Nice late on Saturday night. The hot sea air hit us like a smack in the face and we headed off to locate our 2-star hotel (summertime in Niice is very expensive). The Hotel Comfort Azur Riviera was NOT a sight for sore travel-weary eyes and upon finding our designated room unvisited by housekeeping, I started to picture Jon and myself sharing a bed with rats and cockroaches and suffering a Norman Bates experience (I am slightly princess-like when it comes to hotel rooms). After charming the hotel manager's son with our broken French (I'm not sure where the manager was - talking to mother???), we scored ... read more
