Bonjour ! My holiday is well and truly over, I am back in Cham at last and settling back into mountain life. 2 weeks in the office done and the weekends off. It’s a little strange here so far, same but different, some familiar faces and some newbies. I have a new desk by the window, sitting next to Rosy again. They tried to split us up so we had to put our foot down! Luckily our stressful summer together hasn’t affected our friendship. We just have agreed to differ about certain things. I’ve already had a note on my desk saying ‘I love you more than sausages’ and an email saying ‘I look like a potato’. There’s not much hope for my mental health but Rosy has also emailed me the number for Samaritans so ... read more

Well Jill thought Annecy was amazing - that was before she hit the Alps! Driving along these roads through the mountains, overlooking gorgeous french towns nestled in valleys. The towns were beautiful and were a mixture of French and Swiss influence in their style. Then as you turned a corner - there was a spectacular sight! Mt Blanc - snow topped! Jill had got her wish and saw a snow topped mountain (she had missed out with Mt Fuji!) Wow it was stunning - the sun shining on it, mountains, valleys, green woods - very majestic in deed! So we hit Chamonix... now there had been discussion about one night here then back to Annecy as it was so lovely. Well that idea was immediately dismissed when we hit Chamonix! As we were driving through the ... read more

A Long Romance with France Once again we catch up our dynamic duo on a ferry across the English Channel on route to Cherbourg. A calm sea greeted us as we sailed from Portsmouth and watched as land slipped from view. We were on our way to France for a much anticipated portion of our journey. We were going to get the opportunity to see a lot more of the countryside than on our previous visit in January where we remained in Paris for New Years. As the research progressed, we recognized that renting a car seemed to be the best way to accomplish our goals. The coastal hills slowly came into view as we neared our destination and our excitement grew. Our ship slowly cruised into the harbor past battered old fortifications and docked smoothly ... read more

Chamonix was THE town in France that I was looking forward too. In all the travel books I got my hands on, and Google pictures that I saw I was prepared to be amazed. It is a mountain town located in the Alps next to the highest peak, Mount Blanc. No big deal, right? Its supposed sister town is Aspen in Colorado, but Alps vs. Rockies… Alps win. Before arriving in Chamonix from Annecy we were all doing a little inner turmoil over the amount of money to be spent in taking a lift over the Alps into Italy. As the train brought us closer and closer we made our decision to bite the bullet. If it looked this beautiful from the ground it was sure to be mind blowing from the top, and that was ... read more

The Alps have been an old dream of mine which in some strange way did not came true so far (I've dedicated most of my traveling time for third-world regions in the belief that Europe and the western world could wait for older age). This time I managed to combine a business trip in Germany with a short however condensed trip to the French Alps. After a week in Heidelberg, I took the weekend off and headed towards the town of Chamonix located at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps and in Western Europe. It rises 4,810 m (15,781 ft) above sea level and is ranked 11th in the world in topographic prominence. After a half-day cruising the German and Swiss "Autobahns" (the German highways known for their unlimited speed) and ... read more

After class today Marc and I decided to hop in the car and go on an adventure! We ended up in Chamonix-Mont Blanc, France. As border control was "closed" today it was easy to drive right across the border without a glance from the dark customs unit. We knew Mont Blanc was a famous mountain in the Alps but unfortunately, we were both pretty uneducated as to what it looked like or which mountain we were looking for. Alas, we came upon the town of Chamonix, a charming little village at the base of Mont Blanc. The tourist office gave us directions to Mer de Glace and we hopped on a train that took us straight up the side of the mountain. A lovely French man explained to us that the glacier is actually moving at ... read more

How do you get from sea level to the highest point in the Alps? Easy, miss your train to Nimes. So the plan was to head to Provence Thursday afternoon (friday class was cancelled). Wednesday we went to town and made our reservations for the high speed TGV train to Nimes. We had it written on a piece of paper, checked it on the lady's computer screen to confirm our reservation. Well, on the train to Paris from Rouen, we were looking at our tickets. Departure from Paris was at 11:30 for the TGV, not the 4:00 we thought we booked. Whoops. So we tried to go where we could (we were on our railpass, so gotta use it that day). Everything south was booked, Bordeux was booked. So we decided to go to Lyon through ... read more

Salut ! Just 10 more days to go at my mountain home. I've been enjoying the last few fun filled weeks of the season and making the most of the sunloungers at Grand Montets for some browning & blonding action. Just when we thought spring was here and summer around the corner, winter has returned with a vengeance. We've had 50cms dump of snow over the weekend and Cham is a winter wonderland again. Friday the weather was so bad , we had to cancel our fondue night at the piste chalet and on Saturday the clouds were still looking ominous. Wednesday we had the Boss des Bosses, an inter resort saisonnaires competition on the piste with music, barbecue and vin chaud ! Chamonix came second in the races and the party continued onto apres in ... read more

After a quick flight across the channel we were met in Geneva by a very tanned Paul (Nick's cousin) - obviously he had been hard at work being a ski bum. We got to Argentiere, 15 mins beyond Chamonix, and made ourselves feel very welcome in Paul's new apartment by delving into the sauscisson, I resisted the chocolate cookies even though secretly I wanted one but I thought it polite and girly not to scoff all of Paul's food on the first day. We had a couple of beers and then rested our weary heads on the newly washed sheets - Paul had been hard at work all day using the traditional method of washing, using his feet to tramp out the dirty sheets in his wash tub, think he may have also taken a bath ... read more

Train ride from Lyon to St Gervais: 75 Euros ... 3 nights accomadation in cute ski chalet: 288 Euros ... Ski rentals for 2 days: 120 Euros ... Lift tickets: 124 Euros ... Stale pasta and small bottle of water: 25 Euros ... Skiing sopping wet down a black diamond in the French Alps with a runny nose: priceless! Bienvenue back to France!!! Back when we got lost on our way to Geneva, we decided we'd skip Paris and spend time skiing instead, and promised ourselves we'd be back! It was also the 3 year anniversary for Kristena's mom, so it was really important for her to be somewhere beautiful and peaceful on March 12, rather than running around a city sightseeing. We found a cute little hotel in St Gervais and on our first night ... read more
