It's not as if it were a life long dream. I only heard about this trek less than 2 months ago. But since I did I wanted to do it. Tour du Mont Blanc. A 180 km circuit around the highest mountain in Europe. It must be beautiful and it's definitely challenging. I just had to go. My friends Dana and Ron decided to join me, and so on a nice Saturday morning we met in the airport and flew to Chamonix. Sunday was a warm up day, with a nice short hike to Lac Blanc. We debated whether to take the easy way, a cable-car to the top (L'Index) and go down, but Ron insisted on starting from the middle station (Le Flegere) which meant about 2 hours climb (500 m), in a beautiful scenery. ... read more

Well, tomorrow we head back to Paris and from there back to the states, so I think this will be the last installment of our blog. Some of you may be relieved by that... :) Today before we turned in our well-used Mont Blanc multipass, we headed up to 3300m to the Grands Montets. It was a beautiful clear day, we could see forever. Even Mont Blanc showed herself for the entire day, as if to say goodbye... This was a real treat, and a rarity from our week's experience here. We could not have asked for a more perfect day weather-wise. From the Grands Montets, we could see many mountaineers heading up the ice towards the Aiguille Verte summit - crazy, if you ask us. We even saw a couple skiers take off down the ... read more

Today we took the cable car and then the ski lift up to Col de Balme, a very green, grassy, hilly area further up the valley. A col is the saddle of a mountain. There were cows with huge cow bells where we hopped on the cable car, further up we saw a mare and her colt. There are flowers everywhere, but we don't think we saw any edelweiss - plenty of white flowers but they didn't look like the botanical drawings on the back of our map... none the less, Cathleen had a hard time not singing any tune from the Sound of Music -- the opening scene of that movie, where Maria sings "the hills are alive" is EXACTLY what the Col de Balme looks like. We hiked up the col, crossing into Switzerland and ... read more

Hey everyone - we're in a little cybercafe in Chamonix. Here's the update on the past few days... The TGV (Train de Grande Vitesse - high speed train) was awesome. We went from Paris to Lyon in 2 hours - about 400 miles. It was smooth, efficient and quick. We then changed trains twice to end up here in Chamonix-Mont Blanc, including standing room only on the last one, a 45 minute slow train that stopped many times on the way up the valley. The mountains here are amazing. The town is on the valley floor and the mountains just go straight up from here. There are numerous "aiguilles" or needles, spires really, and of course Mont Blanc. Mont Blanc is shrouded in clouds 90% of the time, a bit shy as are many of the ... read more

I have just seven words...I AM IN LOVE WITH THE ALPS...just spent the past 3 days in Lucerne, Switzerland set at the base of Mt. Pilatus and Mt. Rigi, two of the higher points in the Swiss Alps...hiked a part of Mt. Pilatus yesterday, to a look out point called Frankmuntegg...it was about 2 hours UPHILL and boy is my butt feeling it today, but boy were the views at the top worth it. ANd well I know I must be in love with the Alps, because even though it is absolutely pouring today, I can't help but smile being surrounded by the beauty, magesty and mystery of the snow capped giants. (True love does come after reveling in even the nastiest parts of something--right?). In order to get here I got to take the Mount ... read more

I didn't really plan to do much ski touring this April and May, but by coincidence I didn't end up doing much else besides just wallowing in snow.. My original plan was to go to the Austrian Alps around Eastern holiday, but the weather forecast for the Alps was not good, so I headed to good old High Tatra mountains in Slovakia, just like I do most winter weekends. Eastern holiday in Tatras 14-17.4.2006 On Friday I joined up with some friends and we did one of the classic ski tours in the Tatra mountains - we went up and down Soliskovy couloir and then up the Mlynicka valley and through Bystre saddle to Furkotska valley. The later valley is a beautiful untouched place where very little people go in the winter, yet it is so ... read more

Hey guys, sorry that we haven't found a computer lately. We are having a blast!!! Our flight was perfect. Early takeoffs, no delays, no layover in Atlanta, just boarded onto the next plane. We upgraded to the Emergency Exit seats and had tons of leg room and windows. Easy rental car pick-up. Straight here. Skied the past three days. Day one: went up the Agui du Mudi, it was spectacular!!! So many steeps and crazy chutes! Went up early and toured around all day. Glaciers and peaks all around. Amazing (Pictures to come). Day two: Beautiful weather and we decided to drive to Switzerland and ski Zermatt. The best day! Out the door at 7am. Huge runs with tons to look at and amazing views. We were above the clouds looking down on the mountains. Took ... read more

We made the most of the European winter by spending Christmas and our 3rd wedding anniversary snowboarding in Bernex, France. A great little resort. And in February Dave headed back into the Alps for a "Men's Quest for Greatness" weekend in St Moritz, Switzerland. ... read more

12/10/05 - The drive to Chamonix (in the French Alps) from Switzerland, felt like we were driving to the roof of Europe. The road kept climbing gradually higher, it is also an amazing engineering feet, with its foundations way down in the valley and the actual road hugging the sides of the mountains. At 130kmh the valley below was rushing by and the mountains to our right were a much more secure thing to focus on. Chamonix sits in the valley below Mont Blanc at 1036 metres, so for us Aussie mountain dwellers, it was odd that the floor of the valley is 571 metres further above sea level than our home. Driving into Chamonix produced so many “oooh’s” and “aaah’s” from us both, the town is squeezed below the Alps and is something like Thredbo ... read more
