So I was invited on a three day trek from Morzine across to Chamonix on a route, apparently very well known - the GR5. I didn’t really think too much about what it involved what to take or even how fit I would need to be. After asking Sam about what I needed to take I was given a list of things - easy I thought and thank goodness for Sam as I would not have taken the most useful item - walking poles! I met up with the other seven girls early on the Tuesday morning thinking they all looked very organised, right gear etc and panicked a little at what I had forgotten as my rucksack was a little smaller than theirs. But we marched on, together with (forgot to mention) six dogs! ... read more

Saturday morning arrived and we packed up and headed to Chamonix. A funny thing about travel directions: after we got directions from one of the hotels we stayed from the Michelin site, we’ve been using the site ever since. At the little Internet café in Bonnieux, after laboriously copying the directions Bonnieux to Chamonix, the owner said “Quoi?” Mais c’est facile—Bonnieux—Avignon—Geneve—Chamonix. Easy for him to say. My complicated directions told us more or less the same thing, and we got here in about 5 hours including about an hour of breaks. I had seen the Canadian Rockies—maybe I had the same reaction then—but my first view of the Alps took my breath away. Good thing Kevin had already been here because he wasn’t able to enjoy the view while driving. This trip was one of ... read more

I dont remember when was the last time I did not spend CNY with the family. It may have been seven years ago when I left Kuala Lumpur for Melbourne. Since I am alone this year, DP and I went to Chamonix for a day ski. Left Geneva at 800 am, parked at Brevent and at the piste by 930am. Not many people in sight, despite being in the middle of the busy school holiday period and UK weekender madness. Snow in Brevent was average, but awesome in La Flegere. Found my legs after the initial shock - both feet were in deep protest at the exertion despite the perfect morning snow condition - bright, mild breeze, perfect visibility and no pesky kids. Did about 10 runs in all - mostly red. F-2 was the best ... read more

Bonjour mes amis! Alright..... so I just got back from my ski trip to Chamonix and my quick visit to Geneva, and all I can say is WOW!!! Skiing in the French Alps is definately an amazing experience, and Chamonix is a gorgeous little ski town!!! Skiing in the French Alps is very different from our ski hills back home in Canada- I must admit that although I was in thye French Alps the ski hills in Canada are in a league of their own. We have an extremely high quality runs are much more difficult back home. However, that being said- the French Alps are a sight to be seen. The mountains and the whole area is absolutley amazing. (As you can see by the pics I have posted). Furthermore, skiiing in just a fleece ... read more

Hitting the Alps!! Salut tous le monde! Onward with the journey mes amies! From Paris, Phil and I boarded a train enroute to Chamonix in the French Alps. Immediately, the adventure of the twelve hour french sleeper train commenced. One would imagine that on said train that one could most definately find a dining car...pas de problem, non? Try it again buddy. After getting prepped for a night on the non existent car of dining, we quickly found out from the cold and unhelpful Train controler as he shrugged "Non, pas ici! Il n'y a rien!!!" (translation: NO! not here! There is nothing, what are you thinking you dumb Americans with bad accents?!...ok maybe I added that last part...) So, like I said...onward. We took our hungry selves to the only vending machine we could find ... read more

Chrissy in the snow, what an awesome idea, It was to be our first White Christmas. A few months before Christmas we all decided to go to the snow in France. No one had a clue what to expect but with the crew that were going we kinda had a suspicion that we would go hell for leather the whole trip in everything we did, be it snowboarding, drinking, snowboarding or drinking!!! The drive there in the Red Bullet was very long. The seven of us, Dave, Kerrie, Casey, Nese, Fieldsy, Mel & Grant, left London and hit the road in the night, full to the brim with all of our gear, and headed to Dover to catch the Ferry. We were very lucky the whole way there as there was no traffic, just a shitload ... read more

When I went to Aiguille du Midi yesterday I bought a 2-day multi-pass for the cable cars around. So today was packed with going up & down the mountains. I decided to do a short hike that started in Plan d'Aiguille, the middle station on the way up. I arrived at 8am, and there were no queues. The sky was perfectly clear and I decided to make another short visit up there. In the morning the lights are different so it's another angle, and anyway it's all breath-taking, so why not see it again? The short hike to Lac Bleu and Mer du Glace was a fine walk with lovely views. I put on my music and enjoyed the morning cool air. Afterwards it became quiet hot - in fact everybody talks here about 'le chaleur': ... read more

It started when I heard of the 120 missiles attack. Suddenly the mood wasn't high anymore. My state of mind changed completely. My heart was in Israel, not in the TMB anymore. When the spirit is low, everything bothers me. I felt lonely. I couldn't go on. However, I still did another one day, on Sunday. It was relatively easy. We started climbing from the refuge along a lovely valley called Vallon de la Lee Blanche, to Col de la Seigne, crossing back to France. On the way up we had magnificent views behind us and Ron was walking almost backwards, holding the camera and taking pictures. We reached our refuge for today already at 12:30, and indulged ourselves with lunch at the restaurant instead of the usual bread and cheese lunch. The rabbit I had ... read more

This is the name of my first novel, if I ever get around to writing it. Given that I am struggling to keep my journal entries up to date at the moment, maybe not. Basically, my 3+ days in Chamonix were full of great little vignettes. There was the bus trip from Geneva airport leading to me being invited to my first stag night, the adrenalin rush of paragliding off Grand Montets (3,300m), the sensational cable car ride across to Italy, and some awesome hiking. In more detail....... After arriving at Geneva airport without confirmed transportation to Chamonix, I was approached by a sleazy little man offering a door-to-door service to Chamonix. After determining that this was easily the quickest way for me to get to Chamonix, I, along with a small bus load of others, ... read more

So this past Saturday we took a petit excusion to the most touristy town in Savoie- Chamonix. The town itself is quite beautiful and is located at the foot of the highest point of the Alps and the highest mountain in France- Mont Blanc. The bus ride there took about 2 hours, so I took advantage of the air conditioning and the oldies station (I don't know what it is about chartered buses in France and oldies, but I napped to "Can't Buy me Love" and sang along to "Help" so I'm happy either way....and the air conditioning is a big plus).. So I wake up when the bus starts hitting roads that almost made me sick, but was quickly distracted by the snow and glacier covered mountains that were located in view outside of my ... read more
