What a lovely day and a good part of it spent several thousand metres up in the mountains. Bob had already unloaded the scooter out of the Tandy garage so we used it to get to the “Aiguille du Midi” station in Chamonix, this being the cable car ride up to the top of Mont Blanc. This is the “must do” attraction and the cable car was packed full, so much so that the driver told people to take their backpacks off to make room for the last couple he pushed in before shutting the doors. Chamonix may be a very popular winter snow destination but there were plenty of summer sun visitors today. The 20-minute ride up the mountain, courtesy of just a long length of very flexible cable, was in two parts. The first ... read more

Glorious sunny day. Absolutely perfect weather for a drive to the Alps. We slightly overslept but not a problem as not as far to travel today as on previous days. We only used a short distance of motorway just to get clear Lyon, after that we used the alternative D roads, which were quite uncrowded and truck-free being a Sunday, and headed in the direction of Geneva. An uneventful drive which took us very close to Switzerland and followed the border for several miles on the outskirts of Geneva. From here the scenery suddenly changed from quite flat and agricultural to mountainous and dramatic as we came within sight of the Alps and in particular the stunning white covered Mont Blanc. It completely dominates the landscape and we had it in view for the last 20 ... read more

Snowboarding is one of my favorite things to do and Dad and I decided to have a quick getaway together. I love the sense of freedom of being in the mountains and even though snow sports are not a relaxing holiday I would choose to be in the mountains snowboarding over being on a beach any day. The trip started well with a nice Easy jet flight to Geneva and easy transfer to the hotel. As soon as we got to the hotel we realised the season may have been over sooner than we thought. Most of the runs were shut and the ones that weren't had poor snow quality and were also very busy. Despite this it was good to get a few days snowboarding in. Chamonix was a lot smaller than I thought but ... read more

Wide open trails all to yourself, lots of soft powder, enough off-piste to actually get you properly lost and a pretty decent nightlife – yep I had been wanting to go on a European snow trip for a couple of years now. However, unlike New Zealand you can’t really just pop down to the mountain for the weekend, you have to commit to a whole week. And since the last time I donned a snowboard was about 5 years ago, I wasn’t really sure what I was getting myself in for.... however I now find myself on the way to the famous French resort town of Chamonix, along with a large bunch of my British friends. Chamonix is buried deep within the French Alps at the base of Mont Blanc, so we actually flew into Geneva ... read more

Road Trip So me, Dan and Phil left Jersey harbour to make our way by boat to St Malo in France in order to drive roughly the 600 miles to Chamonix for a week of skiing and boarding in the Alps. The drive down to Chamonix was great with Phil taking the reins all the way to Chartres on the first day where we stopped for the night at a Mercure Hotel. Before bed we decided to watch a quick bit of TV before getting some well needed rest and happened to come across an old black and white movie. This would normally make one immediately turn over in boredom. However, it happened not to be your average black and white movie as it was some man probing a woman with a 12ft long branch with ... read more

About time for a summer blog as it’s well and truly autumn in Chamonix. I already have the heating on and winter season preparations are underway. Everyone said the summer in Cham would be lovely, they lied, I think I’ve got a vitamin D deficiency ! On the occasional hot day I have been sun worshipping at the outdoor pool. Not much swimming involved, more lounging with book, turning half hourly for even blonding and browning ! Luckily it was really hot & sunny in June for mum’s first visit to Cham. Forgetting the altitude, we started on a red walk up to Chalet Floria on the first day, had some well earned blackcurrant cake and after that stuck to leisurely day trips to Annecy & Montreux, browsing the market and eating ice creams for the ... read more

What a day! We started with a climb of 4800m up the face of Mont Blanc in the sunrise. It took 3 gondolas to get to the top, including one of Rick Steves' "Wow!" trips for a phenomenal view. Rugged mountain peaks, a surround of glaciers, 6° weather and a glorious sunrise prior to crowds. We were clearly on top of the world! As scheduled, we met up with our "pilots" for our paragliding experience...it was everything we had imagined and much more! Eddie and Jerome had already done their first flight of the day and were ready to roll for the second. Both were quite experienced, reassuring and had a great sense of humour!! With an office view like theirs you would wonder what they did to get their adrenaline pumping!! We started at 2000m ... read more

Hello again!!! All this WiFi availability will leave you all tired of the updates I'm sure!!! Just a quick note for today, more to come on the rest of southern France!! (I know some of you are die hard subscribers, but all good things in time!!) We are currently in the french alpes...Mont Blanc to be exact. The drive here was phenomenal!! The mountains are gorgeous, and even as far as 150km away from our destination, colourful parachutes could be seen scattered across the sky line. For the most part, the crabby city slickers are gone, and with them the ill mannered children, loud music, honking horns and funky smells!! Everyone here is so down to earth and full of life!! It makes one want to...jump off a mountain?! Wait, that doesn't seem right!! Haha! However, ... read more

Just when we thought spring had arrived, the snow has been back for 3 days so I’m holed up in my apartment (with bedroom and balcony this year) with the heating back on full as its dreary and dull outside. On Weds we were eating lunch on the office patio talking about arranging the end of season barbecue when I realised I hadn’t done any blogging at all since I got here in October. It has been quite a different season, long gone are the carefree seasonnaire days as this winter’s promotion has brought as much stress as a real job back in London. It took a while to get my full team together, and then just after the final one arrived, one left! New technology has not worked as planned and I’ve been working all ... read more
