According to our well planned itinerary, we were going to go to the top of the mountain today in the cable-car, however after a night of thunderstorms and rain like you couldn't imagine , we woke up to the mountains disappearing into the clouds and yet more rain. A rethink was required, as it would be silly to go up there when we would be lucky to be able to see a few feet, let alone enjoy the panoramic views of Mont Blanc and the surrounding area. After a quick croissant-run (always the hunter-gatherer, regardless of the weather), we decided to pull forward some other activities and save the cable-car for a day when it was clear. We decided to first go to the Gorges de la Diosaz. These gorges were strikingly similar to the Krimmler ... read more

Since we're in France, it would be rude not to have croissants for breakfast, so I went to the local pastry shop first thing to get some. As you would expect they were a lot nicer than what we are used to from Tesco back in England. Whilst the others went for a swim, I went for a walk on one of the paths up the side of the hill / mountain near the edge of the town. It was really hard going, probably due to the air being thinner than I am used to and nothing to do with the croissants that I have been eating. Anyway, there were some excellent views, although mostly the path was surrounded by trees and where there was a gap in the trees, the cable-car cables spoilt any potential ... read more

After all the driving of yesterday and the late meal and hence late night , coupled with the fact that we're (well my wife and I at least) are past it and no longer up to the pace, it was a casual day today, with a lay-in and some relaxing. That said, I got up to go for a run as it was relatively cool first thing. However as soon as the sun got above the mountains (which took a while given how high they are) it started to get very hot, very quickly. Everywhere was a lot busier that we were expecting, but we should't be surprised as we had heard just before we left that this is peak-time for the French going on holiday and about two thirds of the French actually holiday in ... read more

We loved the holiday to Austria two years ago so much that we decided we would do something very similar (albeit not exactly the same) for our holiday this year. We picked another winter ski resort, this time Chamonix in the French Alps, and set about driving there again, this time directly with no overnight stop-overs. That way we have the freedom to do what we like and, after the Ryan Air experience for the Morocco holiday (), we don't have to worry about luggage limits, bag sizes, bag quantities and all the grief. We had a roof-box delivered the day before and we then spent the evening filling and filling it some more, and then a bit more just to make sure we had everything we might need and a good load more that we ... read more

The places visited and hiked are touristy with vacation houses booming as well, but high tourist season was still to come, so i had wonderful hikes, even discovering gems of local small farms, preserved in natural state, kind of frozen in time, cozy villages, charming towns. Hike near Samoens was most scenic, but other hikes had highest mountain views in the background and each place and mountain was full of beauty and wonder, small discoveries and feelings. It was my first time in the Alps, basically in Chamonix valley or close by and it is the highest Alps in Europe, but my first impression was that they had different feel to me than volcanic young mountains. It was short trip, but my legs felt it had enough and there was much more trails to hike, that ... read more

The circumnavigation of Mont Blanc has been on my trekking wishlist for a long time, so it was great to finally tick the box with a guided Utracks 10-day trip. There was still so much snow and ice that we attempted the trek in a clockwise direction, instead of the usual counter-clockwise way, in the hope that the snow would melt enough to give us a chance of crossing the high passes. As it was, we had to walk on the lower trails, and missed the high passes of Col du Ferret and Col d’Arpette as they were too icy and treacherous. Whilst the trek was more challenging than usual given the extreme conditions, it was still an exhilarating experience walking through the three countries of France, Switzerland and Italy - with a glass or two ... read more

Well, for all of you who aren't in the know, it has been a rollercoaster of dramas so far on this trip. The London leg started off well, catching up with friends and family in England, but on my flight to Geneva to start the France leg of the trip, my checked baggage got held up at Gatwick Airport. I didn't get my bag back until 5 days later! The next drama was my job not going ahead. Turns out that the job involved more face to face contact with customers on the shop floor than I first thought, which is a problem when your French is still quite limited. So I was given 40 euros for my time and then had to look for another job. The third drama was having to move apartments due ... read more

Tour du Mont Blanc is one of the classic and most famous walking routes in Europe circling some 170 km around the Mont Blanc massif. The route passes through France, Italy and Switzerland on an easy to follow and well trodden trail offering some very scenic and outstanding mountain views along the way. Thousands of people complete the TMB every year and normally it can be done in 8-12 days. Good weather is not always a guarantee. When I did the walk in June I experienced 4 seasons in less than 24 hours with rain, snow and wonderful sunshine hitting the trails leaving me in full winter gear at one moment and T-shirt just a few hours later. Kevin Reynolds guidebook " Tour of Mont Blanc " was very informative and useful to bring along. I ... read more
