Monday 15 June 2015 After a fabulous visit to the old town of Annecy yesterday today's plan was a trip to Chamonix. Everyone we had talked to about this trip said it was a "must do". All we needed was a fine day. We are currently in a pattern of thunderstorms and one was expected in the afternoon. So with some excitement, and a bit of luck there would be no rain, we headed off. There are a few choices of roads to take. We decided to drive through Thones and Flu met on the outward journey and coming back around Lake Annecy. Sun was breaking through but the mountain tops were shrouded in cloud. The first part of the journey was through alpine meadows. As we zigzagged our way up the mountains to the pass ... read more

Chamonix - I had heard so much about it and just had to see for myself what people were saying. After an early morning start and catching the train to St Gervais and then onto Chamonix, it was close to 2 hours, but 2 hours very much worth it. Oh my goodness, just hopping of the train, the scenery was breathtaking, and of course it being the start of winter you can only imagine the cold in the air. The snow as we were travelling the train was getting thicker as we went up. Once arriving, I had to mark my one giant leap for Jacqui. I captured my foot step on the snow lol. I then wandered down the main street, although normally you are looking ahead and to the sides as you are walking. ... read more

Loving our hiking adventures - this time we did the famous Tour de Mont Blanc Trek: 14 to 26 June 2014 Arrived Geneva ex. Sydney before catching a shuttle bus across to Les Houches in France. Had a rest day in Les Houches (5km from Chamonix) before heading out on Tour de Mont Blanc (TdMB) circuit. NB you can also simply stay in Chamonix (it has more accommodation options, restaurants et al, and then catch the local bus service to Les Houches for $1 Euro / or it is free during certain times). Weather was largely perfect for our 1wwee1-day multi-day hike covering 170km+ from France to Italy to Switzerland and then returning back into France. Except on one of the hardest hiking days, we experienced gale force winds, heavy snow falling, torrential rain and poor ... read more

Writing from the fourth country of the trip (England, Ireland, Switzerland, now France). I'm actually just across the Swiss border in a mountain town called Chamonix; I didn't have to show my passport to get here and everyone speaks French just like in Switzerland so it really doesn't feel too different. Up in the mountains, you can see into three countries (the aforementioned plus Italy). While it's in the mid-50s down in the valley, it's in the teens and twenties on the eternally snowcapped mountaintops. I got rained on again walking to my hostel from the train depot in Chamonix (helped rinse some of the mud out of my jeans, ha) and it's raining lightly tonight but it was sunny during the day for gorgeous views of the mountains. It's still early for summer season up ... read more

Alps mountains has always been a place of wonder for me since childhood and I always wished to be there at least once in my life. Luckily I got a chance to work in UK on deputation in 2010 and soon I made up my mind to fulfill that dream. As a part my Europen multi country tour in 2011, I got a glimpse of the Alps on my road journeys but could never go anywhere near to it. At last, I panned to head into the Alps in July 2012 as a part of trekking holidays. After practising weekend treks in Ireland for an year, I booked a week long MontBlanc Highlights tour with Exodus. It was planned for the first week of July to coincide with our company holidays and completed all the preparations in ... read more

Whilst the weather has been nice for the last couple of days, it was considerably cooler than it had been before the storms arrived. However, today the heat was back with vengeance. We had decided that today would be a relaxing day before the long drive back to the UK, so it was a mix of the swimming pool and some final last-ditch photo opportunities. There may have been a small number of remaining angles that I haven't taken photographs of Mont Blanc from yet, so I had a day to get those done. I've now got hundreds of pictures to bore all my friends and family with when we get back. It was also a sad last trip to our favourite Pâtisserie for croissants for breakfast, not to mention pain au chocolat and a baguette ... read more

Having seen what the queues were like on previous days and being very keen to get the most out of those €234 tickets, we decided to make it an early start for our trip up to the Aiguille du Midi. We got to the cable-car at 6.45am, which was about 15 minutes after it opened. It was starting to get quite busy, but nothing like we had seen it previously. Almost everyone was carrying rope and ice-axes, so it was true what we had heard that the first people up there in the morning are the climbers, rather than the tourists like us who were just going up for the views. We did standout some what. We'd had the foresight to put on some warm clothes and some decent shoes, but clearly we were not professional ... read more

What a difference a day makes. After the peaks being lost in cloud for the last few days, it was completely clear this morning. What a shame that we didn't get any views when we went for our walk yesterday, although it was still a great walk and actually, with my wife not liking heights, not being able to see very far was probably a blessing in disguise. The sun is out and it is considerably warmer than it has been, although still not as hot as when we first arrived, before the weather turned. It's a lot more comfortable - just right for us. We had decided that today would be a chilling day, so not pressure to do anything particularly. My wife and I walked to the supermarket to stock-up on supplies. The little ... read more

Bad weather or not, we decided that today we were going to go up the mountains and go for walk. We decided on a walk from Plan Praz, which is 2,000 meters up and a gondola ride from Chamonix, to La Flégère, which is 1,894 meters up and a cable-car ride back down to Les Praz. After the now daily croissant-run, we walked to the gondola station. Given that we also wanted to go to the Aiguille de Midi and the Montenvers Glacier on another day, we got two day passes, not on consecutive days. That set us back €234, so it was another one of those traumatic moments, but it had to be done. This is what we'd come all this way for after all. Once we got the tickets we discovered that they give ... read more
