Chamonix - I had heard so much about it and just had to see for myself what people were saying.
After an early morning start and catching the train to St Gervais and then onto Chamonix, it was close to 2 hours, but 2 hours very much worth it.
Oh my goodness, just hopping of the train, the scenery was breathtaking, and of course it being the start of winter you can only imagine the cold in the air. The snow as we were travelling the train was getting thicker as we went up. Once arriving, I had to mark my one giant leap for Jacqui. I captured my foot step on the snow lol. I then wandered down the main street, although normally you are looking ahead and to the sides as you are walking. Not here, you are gazing up into the mountains that are surrounding the township. Today was blue skies, with a bit of cloud and just perfect to catch the train into the mountains to the Glacier. It was only -4c in Chamonix, but they had also had their first 2 days of snowfall in the mountains.
Catching the little train, which took
us another kilometre away but also to great heights, to the glacier we were approximately 1900 metres above sea level. Hoping off the train you could feel the frost and cold, I had to force myself to take deep breaths, as my heart was pumping a little faster than normal. Being a little scared of heights, you can imagine that coming up the mountain and looking down below to the township of Chamonix, how it could take your breath away.
There was snow.. and lots of it. I have never seen snow after a snowfall, and I just had to touch it. I put my hand on the snow and it just sunk. It was so soft, and to explain the feel to the hand, is hard to describe.
It was so fine, you could just wave your hand through it, without any problem at all. My little travel buddy, dobby, found a deer made out of snow, he just had to have his picture taken with it, lol. And, you wouldn't believe that while up near the glacier, there was a little bit of snowfall for about 10 minutes, but to see those fine speckles of white
falling from the sky was amazing.
We walked around, looked in all directions and there was still nothing but mountains above us. We were only half way up would you believe.
Pictures are breathtaking, and of course I had to write my name in the snow 😊.
We spent an hour up at the Glacier and then down in the train again. I met this nice girl who was from Chile on the train and we were having a conversation about our travels, which was lovely. The site of Chamonix from above in the train was amazing too.
Back in Chamonix, of course souvenir shopping, and I did make my own little snowball, and then found a nice little pub to sit in and have a soup and a beer, while looking out the window at the breathtaking views.
I walked a lot of streets, and everything was different no matter what direction you were walking. My day was nearing the end, and darkness was setting in. You could really feel the cold coming as they were expecting more snow in the evening.
Boarding the train to come home, and for the whole 2
hour journey I could not believe I had just visited the French Alps.
