Thunderstorms rolled over the Cap Ferrat peninsula overnight, bringing cooler air and clear blue skies this morning; perfect weather for our planned outing to visit the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild today. We got an earlier than usual start for us (10:20 AM), catching the #15 bus shortly before it departed from its starting point a few blocks up the street from our apartment. It's been quite awhile since we've used buses, mostly in Paris over the years, and it felt good to hop aboard such a modern, clean and economical mode of transport once again. The fare of 1.50 euros is quite a bargain, considering that we could ride all the way to Nice on a single ticket. However, today we disembarked after only 3 stops to reach the villa. A curving, slightly uphill driveway of ... read more

Yesterday we laid low, venturing out only to visit the local butcher for a poulet roti (rotisserie chicken); the boulangerie (bakery) for a baguette and croissants; and a vegetable vendor outside our door for some zucchini flowers, fennel, potatoes, apples, tomato, green beans, white asparagus and some shallots. Apparently Chef Dee is planning something special for dinner? Feeling somewhat rejuvenated today, we decided to try one of the designed promenades, or walking trails, that hug the coastline of the Cap Ferrat peninsula where we are located. These walks are of various distances and degrees of difficulty, so we selected one of the least-demanding of them, the Promenade Maurice Rouvier, which runs in a northerly direction for about 1.2 kilometers starting from the Saint-Jean town hall. The path we followed was very flat, with only a few ... read more

The weather here in this little corner of paradise continues to be glorious, with clear, blue skies and temperatures in the upper 60s. We decided today to take a stroll along the section of the port promenade that we had yet to explore, so this morning we did so. Along this stretch we passed numerous pleasure boats moored in their berths, a seashell museum, movie theater, a restaurant with an inviting terrace, a hair dresser (coiffeur) and a marine supply/rental shop. On our return walk, as it was approaching lunchtime, we passed Le Bar du Port, where we had eaten on the night of our arrival. The chalkboard menu displayed outside included some interesting dishes, so we grabbed a table on the terrace. Shortly thereafter, Anthony (the friendly waiter we met on our first visit) welcomed ... read more

Today we take the number 2 tram to the Girabaldi stop. We check out the numerous cafes in the large plaza. When Mark spots fish and chips on one menu our decision is made. We both have the fish and chips and it is very good. We then catch the number 15 bus to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. The bus drops us right at the entrance to the villa. The villa was built on 17 acres by Beatrice de Rothschild of the Rothschild banking and wine making family. Beatrice was a collector of paintings by the grand masters, rare rugs and rare items of furniture. She also collected porcelain and some walls are covered in tapestries. A audio guide is included in the entrance fee. Mark and I enjoy seeing the villa which is furnished in the original furniture ... read more

Fluers Market is reknown for it's flowers & fresh fruit and vegetables. Quite a colourful display! A walk to catch the 100 bus to Beaulieu sur Mer. Always a scenic drive. Off the bus & a wee look at the rich boats in the Marina & then straight down to the beach. Feet in the Mediterranean to the other end. A sit in the shade with our pre-made lunch before we walked the Pomenade around Saint Jean Cap Ferrat. Some very nice homes in this area too. The pink house used to be Charlie Chaplin's then it belonged to David Niven who painted it pink on behalf of his wife having cancer. The walk is an easy stroll & lots of people doing the same as us. We choose to take a local bus up into ... read more

Apparently it's going to rain this Samedi night (Saturday) for a few days. We are looking forward to having a day of doing zero but we thought better to save it for when the rain comes. Saint Jean Cap Ferrat is like a small peninsula covered in wealthy looking Villas and cedar trees. It lies between Villefranche and Beaulieu ser Mer. King Leopard II bought 'Villa Les Cedres' (Cedars) which he left to his nephew Albert 1er who during WWI converted it to a military hospital which specialised in lung disease. He being of Belgium extract, the hospital housed many Belgium soldiers. Many of those Belgiums that died in the hospital are buried atop the Saint Hospice hill. Saint Hospice is named after the 'Saint Hospice' who was to be known to have hidden in some ... read more

After a nice long sleep in we went down for breakfast. We were faced with a tough choice - 12 different cereals, each one more sugary than the next. Once fed we gathered a day pack each and caught a tram into the city. They have the most sensual tunes on the trams when you reach a destination. Jez recorded one of them on video, but there were better ones. Anyway when in town we strolled around the docks, main beach and a central area with parks and a sh*tload of fountains. We had lunch in one of the parks and watched some sort of protest, I have no idea what it was for, but it was pretty crap as the students protesting didn't seem that interested, half of them were off swimming in the fountains. ... read more
