In recent years I have started thinking of myself as a bit of a Gecko. It's no secret that I'm a very relaxed person and I honestly think that one of the reasons why I enjoy life so much is because wherever I am I automatically mould myself to my surroundings. Now whilst this does have some drawbacks ( ie the constant struggle to decide who I really am!! Surfer chic? Backpacker? Glamour puss? Workaholic? I've been called all 4 and more..) I'm not going to sit here and tell you about the conflict of my mulitple personalities.. I am going to explain how and why I love transforming into a glamour puss on the French Riviera every now and then.. From the minute you step off the plane into Nice airport you notice that it ... read more

Hi Everyone We are already almost 2 weeks into our trip and I have yet to get started on a blog so here goes, starting from leaving NZ. After that long flight we arrived in San Francisco in the early afternoon in what we thought would be a warm city - this is still California after all. But it was rather cold and apparently this is the normal temperature for this time of year. Apparently the author Mark Twain once said that the coldest winter he ever spent was summer in San Francisco!! We found the hop on - hop off bus, done up to look like a cable car but double height and off we set to see the sights of San Fran. Well, that is, what we could see as the city seemed have ... read more

We have been travelling along the coast of the South of France from St Raphael , through Cannes and Nice to St Jean Cap Ferrat. We drove for hours looking for the nicest place to stay and decided on Juan les pins, home to princes and sheiks. We found a lovely old hotel with last minute rates and their own private beach. We didn't get much further than the deck chairs and had to be dragged out kicking and screaming. Next we went to Villefranche and St Jean Cap Ferrat, two other beautiful beaches full of million dollar views and boats. It has been a really relaxing week, not so much running around but just chilling out, enjoying the views and having a 'holiday' from the holiday. Miss you all so much, love Leonie... read more

Today I took the train to Antibes with Nicolas' friends who were also from Montreal. They were a couple and very mushy, quite annoying actually (also for Nicolas). The couple was late because the girl had something wrong with her eyes (they were itchy) and so she went to the pharmacist. Nicolas warned me about her being a hypochondriac. Anyway, while Nicolas and I bought our tickets, I looked over at this woman who had crumpled to the floor and was crying hysterically. It looked pretty pathetic and she looked very lost, mentally and physically. I came up to her and said "Do you speak English?". She said yes and I asked her what was wrong. She had missed her train to Marseille and wasn't going to make her flight. I told her that it ... read more

Juan Les Pins, France: Picture perfect is what they say, and as cliché as it is, it is more true than ever here in the French Riviera. Just the train and bus rides have beautiful views of the ocean and palm trees, but in Juan Les Pins, they actually have sand beaches instead of the rocky ones elsewhere. From here, we are about 5 minutes to Antibes, 15 to Cannes, 20-25 to Nice, and about 45 minutes to Monte Carlo. After doing a bit of organizing and prioritizing, we decided to spend our first night in Monte Carlo because it was the furthest away and we wanted to be there at night. As soon as you get near the city coming in from the south, you can see across the harbor to the Casino square and ... read more

Well this is my last my last blog. I am now in Juan les Pins relaxing before my plane home sometime this weekend. The water here is a little disappointing after Greece but it’s nice. Caren’s here until Friday taking a vacation from all the travelling too. I forgot to mention in my blog about Venice all the glass and the masks. Every shop window was bursting with color an sparkles from the glitter on the masks and the sparkling glass. I bought a book full of really nice color pictures of the costumes during the carnival in March. I would love to go back and see the carnival. The masks are unbelievably beautiful. We got to watch people at the glass factory blow glass it was pretty impressive. The guy made this little glass horse ... read more

only with topless women" -Tania, on counting the topless women at the public beach in Juan Les Pins. And kinda like the men in speedos, most of the women going topless are not the ones with the best figures. Only about 15% or less of the women are topless so it is no big deal. People tend to be 1 of 2 colors down here, dark brown or bright red. I am an exception, i am white. I left Belgium for Nice bright and early to avoid a airport fiasco like last time. No problems! My last night in belgium was marked by the best waffle i had eaten the whole time taking a kamikazee dive onto my pants, leaving a trail of chocolate down my leg. doh. washed the pants, and most of the stain came ... read more
