On s'imagine des mois ... read more

Tuesday 4 August 2015 The sound of thunder could be heard last night but the morning dawned fine, even if a little cloudy. We decided to take it easy today, our last day on the road. The cornflakes are finished, only a little coffee left, enough clothes detergent to last a few days in Paris, and a car to clean out. But first a visit to Vimy Ridge. Vimy Ridge overlooks a wide plain and was a very strategic position for any army. The Germans held it until April 1917. The Canadians were given the task of capturing the ridge. With careful planning the officers and men set about preparing for the attack. Something unheard of at the time was the sharing of plans and strategies with all ranks so everyone knew what was expected. The ... read more

"Left, left, left" I chant as I drive out of the industrial park from the motorcycle hire shop. Managing to ride on the proper side of the road the next thing I need to remember is roundabouts are CLOCKWISE. Met Bart at the Eurotunnel to catch the train to France. Did I forget to mention how grateful I am to Bart for allowing me to tag along on his European Motorcycle tour? There are safety in numbers when traveling by bike. A bonus is that we both have Bluetooth headsets allowing us to talk while we ride. Our first destination is Vimy Ridge Canadian Memorial. Back home, you never get that sense of history. Our buildings are only a few hundred of years old and world events which help shape our country seem distant. Being here you ... read more

We went to Vimy Ridge. That is where a really big battle in World War One took place. My Great Grampa was in the battle. He was in the 42nd division. France has donated the land to Canada. They even have Parks Canada shirts and sweaters on. Even the workers are all university students from Canada. We took the tour there of the tunnels underground and the trenches that are still there. The trenches are where men would live for a small period of time, and the generals would live in the tunnels. We first went through the tunnels. We saw where the general would sleep. He got a rickety bed, an oil lamp, a stool, and a table. The men would go through the tunnels waiting to be sent out. They could wait as long ... read more

Today we took the train up to the northern part of France to see the Vimy Ridge memorial. During the first World War the Germans had control of the ridge and was a key position of the German line in Northern France. If the allies could capture the ridge it would expose vast territory of German held positions to allied sight and allied guns, and help give the allies a commanding view of the entire Douai Plain. Vimy Ridge was so well fortified that all previous attempts to capture it had failed. The British and French had been trying to capture the Ridge since the beginning of the war and with upwards of 150,000 casualties little progress had been made. The taking of Vimy Ridge was the first time that all 4 Canadian Corps would be ... read more

I was up bright and early with my nose out the window to see what the weather would be like. It was grey and overcast, but I wasn't going to let that get me down. This was a big day for me. One of the only two days on the trip that was pre-planned. Today I would be going on a guided tour of some World War I battlefields. Most important of them to me, as a Canadian, would be the site of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. While it had little tactical value in the over all conflict, it had a significant impact on the morale of the Canadian people as a whole. Some would say that the recognition the Canadians garnered on that bloody hill is what fueled our national identity. It's impact on ... read more

Bonjour, It took about a month of talking about it and organization, but finally the day, a beautiful sunny day at that, arrived for Teresa, Patryk, Claude, Phil, Laura and I to go to Vimy Ridge. For those of you who don’t know, Vimy Ridge was the first time during World War I that Canadian soldiers fought together and were led by Canadian commanders. We had to catch an early train (635am) because we had to arrive in Ypres by 830am in order to meet our guide from Salient Tours who would drive us to Vimy, in northern France if one is not sure, take us around the site when we are there, and then return us to Ypres so we could take the train back to Brussels. The problem with catching such an early train ... read more

With the skylight windows of our room open, we were woken a bit earlier this morning by the sound of the traffic. It was just as well as we needed to get an earlier start for our trip to the WW1 memorial at Vimy Ridge. After a quick breakfast at the trains station McDonalds (I feel guilty - we should have been eating more croissants !) we walked across the street to the car rental company and picked up our car. Having not driven in Europe before and it being a while since I drove standard, it was a bit of a challenge to navigate our way out of Lille in the morning traffic. We had thought there wouldn't be much traffic as we were timing our trip for mid-morning, but the highway was packed with ... read more

OUF!!!!
