After spending a lovely relaxing time at Birgit and Lukas' place, it was time to move on and, as time was running out, make a beeline for the north or France where we were to catch our ferry. But not before we were to make a few stops en route. Our first main stop was the German city of Munich. No one was sure why we wanted to stop at Munich but as has happened so many times this year, it was just “one of those places we should visit”. After spending way too long in Munich traffic jams, we finally made our way to the one place that sounded like lots of fun to us....BMW World! From the outside BMW World looks rather spectacular, an engineering and architectural feat. It's completely glassed in, and there ... read more

Boiry-Notre-Dame (near Arras) Up for a very early start. Quick shower, locked the doors and off, right on time at 7am. We were taking the Euro tunnel for a change, as had managed a cheap fare on the 2pm crossing but knew we could get an earlier one, still at the cheap rate, if we arrived earlier. We had arranged to meet up for our first night’s campsite stop with friends Keith and Sue, who were heading for Italy. They were also getting the Chunnel at about the same time as us but even so it was funny when stopped at the services on the M20 for a lunch break and met them there. Came up behind them again at the Chunnel and followed them onto the train (the 12.50 1.5 hours earlier than booked) ... read more

Arras, France: June 2007 I’m not quite sure when the idea came to me, but I suddenly realised that, in our dash to see other parts of France, we drove straight through some to most historic parts of it, without even slowing down. I thought it was about time to put that right, so set about looking for a central town in which to stay. My eyes alighted on Arras. I’d seen it on signposts many times as we drove along the main road, heading toward, well who knows where; we always seemed to wind up on this road. A little research led me to think it might well be a good centre to explore the area. I was right, and it proved to be so much more than just a centre… Sat 16th June I’d ... read more

Sunday 28th September, 2008 Not an early start to the day as we woke up about 10 o'clock. The sun is shining again! and the weather is great, the air is a little cold but, certainly T-Shirt weather. A gentle drive heading towards Arras, was the plan for the day. We stopped the Cabaret Rouge British Cemetery containing approx 8,000, another beautifully kept and picturesque site. This was the cemetery from which the Canadians, removed an unknown Canadian soldier, to be re-interred in their Unknown Soldier memorial in Ottowa. We visited the Vimy Ridge trench system in the park bequeathed to the Canadians after the war, by the French. This has been kept more or less preserved, as it was when the war ended. The parallel running of the trenches and the size of No Man's ... read more

Saturday, 27th September, 2008 Left Ieper this morning, with a general heading of Bethune. Around lunchtime we stopped at a supermarket and had a coffee. Passed by many War Cemeteries and stopped at four - Trois Arbres Cemetery 1705 Burials Le Grand Beaumart Cemetery 552 Burials Vieille Chapelle New Military Cemetery ? Several hundred Zelobes Indian Cemetery 105 Burials Paid our respects at each of them and signed the visitors book when found. This really took up most of the morning and we arrived at the Bethune Premier Classe approximately 2 o'clock. We used the automated reception, which was impressive and very easy to use. Because the weather was so nice, we chilled for a while on the benches outside the Hotel and caught up with emails etc. The temperature registered as 39°C on my Clock ... read more

PM Thursday 25th September Left the Premiere Classe, having sorted our gear out all over their car park and drove about 10 metres to the Carrefour Car Park. We had two cafe au lait's each to start the day and moved on to Dunkirk proper. Managed to find the Dunkirk Memorial and cemetery. Column 153, showing the name of Meadows W, which was the first monument on right, immediately from the entrance. This was the name mentioned in my grandfather's travel letter of 1961, in which he says that he was part of the Dunkirk evacuation, and that he had found the memorial to his cousin who had been killed at that time, in 1940. Eventually navigated the Dunkirk town centre and found our way to the dockside port area. Had lunch in Les Boucaniers and ... read more

Today is Fete de Musique! The whole of France has music festivals. Thankfully we have a late check out so after a sleep-in we reluctantly leave Paris after lunch with the streets alive with the sound of music. It’s a relatively short drive to our hostel in Arras. I can hear the music, I can see the music but we’re exhausted after such busy days in Paris I just need a cup of tea and a quiet sit down; at least until after dinner then I’m dragging everyone off to the town square P.S. Darren wasn’t in the mood, so I just took the kids out but the music was too loud and the crowds too thick for them so I went out on my own. I just love a festival; wish I had my dancing ... read more
