Paris Trip #2 I needed a bit of a break after my very large post a few days ago. I was literally blogging for 5 hours - including the uploading of pictures. I'm not entirely sure if anyone has read the last one yet - but if not, read it... in sections. It's long. You'll need breaks. Haha. Last Friday (February 24), Allison, Alison, Andrea, and I decided to embark on another fun-filled trip around France. This time, however, it was a bit more planned, and was to Paris! We all had things that we hadn't seen on our first trips there, so it was a good chance to cash in on some more Paris sights. We met in the Ango lobby at 7:45am, pumped and ready to go. Low and behold, the ground is covered ... read more

You love travel. You love the senses of your adventure to lose their bounds amidst the revelations of new things. You love to bask in minority, in the ages of time passed. You love to hear everything, yet understand as little as possible, finding yourself alone, but surrounded by culture. You love to feel a part of it, yet somehow divided from it. You love to travel, yet you seek that isolated experience distinct from the connotations drawn upon like a child’s coloring book of the common tourist. So how do you do it? How do you travel and find your cultural crevasse of invisibility? One way is to go winter. Go winter. That’s what we did. We checked the local temperature. We checked the temp abroad—a Parisian temp registering a similar 40 degrees Fahrenheit—and so, ... read more

Greetings! Well, it is February the 27th and I am now 21 and one day. Hooray! The day was wonderful. Here come the updates! School: Classes began last week and are going very well. I worked it out so I have a great schedule time wise (Fridays off!) and four wonderful courses. Sexuality and Difference: this is taught by a Portuguese man who is by far the most difficult for me to understand, but the readings and subject matter are very interesting so I imagine I’ll understand him more and more as I become familiar with the material. Writing: I have the same professor as last semester, the one who reminds me of a fairy godmother in that all is well when I am in her presence. French Painting of the 20th Century: a continuation of ... read more

Day 5 begins. Today was my museum day. Some people don't like museums, I do. The Louvre was a must see for me. The Louvre As I said in an earlier blog, this time of the year Paris is not too crowded. It only took us about thirty minutes to go through the security checkpoint in the pyramid of the Louvre, and purchase our tickets on the main floor. A little tip: there are automated ticket machines that have much shorter lines than the regular ticket booths, but they only take 5's, 10's, and 20's. I had a 50 so I had to stand in the long line. I'm not going to say much about the Louvre. With over 30,000 individual exhibition pieces, I couldn't even begin to describe a fraction of what there was to ... read more

Cimetiere de l'Est du Pere Lachaise Day 3 begins. Our first stop this morning was the famous cemetary Pere Lachaise. It was rather close to our hostel, so a short walk took us to the cemetary. We didn't go in at the main entrance, but in one of the side entrances. We actually tried to enter in one place that just turned out to be a small park, but we eventually made it inside. The entrance we used was rather strange. After turning down a normal street, we were confronted with a wall at the end of the street. Set in the wall was an open door with stairs leading up beyond the door. Not really knowing what to expect (all I knew before going in was that the cemetary was well known, it was close ... read more

Ah Paris. Paris is the type of place that you must sigh about when you recall your time there. Paris is exactly what you expect it to be, and yet you're not disappointed at all. We arrived, somewhat sleepy and sore from our Venice train ride in the Gare Bercy. For awhile I didn't know where we were, Bercy is that insignificant. But we eventually worked out which Metros to take to get up to the Gares du Nord and d'Est. So we schlepped our stuff to the Liberty Hotel- and I use that term loosely- and left our stuff in a corner behind the front desk. Then we went in search of cash and breakfast. We found a ubiquitous BNP and then found a boulangerie where I bought some croissants and something with apples in ... read more

First Impressions OK, so day 2 in Paris begins. You should know that so far I really hadn't seen much of Paris. It's hard to get an impression of a place from a train, or Metro, or the 300 meters you walk from the Metro to the hostel. So when I woke up on Saturday morning, I was ready to go see some sights. I figured that the best way to start would be to get on the Metro, and get off in the middle of Paris. So, I picked the "Invalides" stop as our jumping off point, since it was close to the Eiffel Tower. As we were walking to the exit of the Metro I started getting excited. What would be waiting for us when we got outside? Would we be able to see ... read more

Introduction We had a short holiday at Gent University, so some friends and I decided to spend a long weekend in Paris. It was a much needed mini-vacation. The weather in Belgium was getting tiresome, and Paris was a much needed breath of fresh air. I took over three hundred photographs over the course of the trip, but I've only posted some of my favorites on the next few blogs. I have broken the trip up chronologically, and spread the photographs out over four journal entries. I hope you enjoy reading about this guy's first visit to "The City of Light". But first a short disclaimer. Who am I to write about Paris? Paris has been the subject of poetry and prose by many authors much more talented than I. My intention is not to provide ... read more

Hello Everyone, I start my spring semester tomorrow morning bright and early and so I thought I would ease myself back into the writing mode by putting up a little blog for you all to help get the kinks out of my typing muscles. I just had a surprisingly long break that lasted an entire month. But between two trips, finishing several papers, and getting really sick twice it didn’t feel that long. The break began with a four day trip to Amsterdam and Brussels. I fell in love with the fairytalesque architecture in Amsterdam as well as its friendly inhabitants and excellent food. The many rings of canals is like having 50 Seines and makes the city so beautiful. Other favorites of Amsterdam include the delicious pancakes, the Van Gogh Museum, and learning a little ... read more

I arrived exhausted in Paris on Saturday. Nevertheless, I went out on my own and explored the City. I literally speed walked 26 km that day. I saw most of the major sites and ate the most amazing sandwich. Unfortunately it was very very cold. I could not wait to get back to the airport! ... read more
