As we write this posting the grey roofs and cobbled courtyard around our apartment are glistening with the gentle rain that has been falling rather persistently during the day making for a more gentle rhythm in the city. This mood has been further mellowed by the fact that is it yet another French public holiday (Pentecost) , the fourth since the beginning of May. While we have ventured out for various necessary tasks and an abortive attempt to get into L'Orangerie (wet day, public holiday, one of the few museums open on Monday all perfectly aligning to result in an hour and a half queue in the chill breeze and rain to get in … we will return another day before we leave, thanks!) we are now warmly tucked up in our apartment enjoying a nice ... read more

Sun Apr 21 - Paris Our transfer bus delivered us to the Novotel Tour Eiffel Hotel, in the final stages, through a warren of dark passageways, strewn here and there with the trash, odors and wikiups of the homeless. Not an auspicious introduction. In the early evening we assembled with the rest of our Traflagar tour group for an introductory dinner at the “Chez Clement” restaurant on the Champs Elysees, just half a block down from the Arc de Triomph. Our companions were an eclectic bunch. Five were Canadians including us and a delightful threesome from Saskatchewan. There were twenty-six or so Australians, a couple folks from New Zealand, eleven Chinese and six Americans. Our “tour director” was a young French woman named Cindy Cartier. She was to demonstrate extraordinary levels of energy, organizational skill, leadership ability ... read more

Ahh, Paris. The city of romance. Of berets, croissants, and expensive bottled water. And, of course, the Eiffel Tower, also known in French as "la Tour Eiffel". I can honestly say that Paris really is all that it's cracked up to be. It's simply breathtaking. The way that the Seine River flows through the city with all of the old buildings on either side. And the petit cafes spread throughout. Not to mention the French accents that you just can't get away from, but who would want to anyway? It's a beautiful language. I had the privilege to visit many of Paris' classic tourist sites: Le Louvre, la Tour Eiffel, Notre Dame, la Bastille, l'Opera de Paris and the Arc de Triomphe, none of which disappointed me. I will take the time to write a blog ... read more

Le Louvre is one of the most famous sites in all of France. It is also the most visited art museum in the world. It has everything from sculptures and paintings, to actual rooms full of historical furniture and decor. I'd never been a history fanatic, but strolling through the museum, I found myself taking an interest in many of the pieces hanging on the walls and what message they had behind them. The museum's art is organized by artist's name, and also by country which the artist is from. As I walked through, I noticed some young Parisians sitting on the floor, sketching or painting one of the monuments they had taken an interest in. If I had this talent, I would've been doing the same. It's almost impossible to see and analyse every single ... read more

The Eiffel Tower- the image that comes to mind when we all think of Paris. It's big and tall, and made of thousands of tons of steel. Driving on the outskirts of Paris, I was beyond excited when I saw the structure towering over all of the other buildings in the distance. When I finally had the chance to get close to it, I was shocked. It's way bigger than I had ever pictured, and completely crowded. There's no way a couple could take a romantic picture under there without having a billion heads in the way. If you pay big bucks, you can climb to the top of the tower. I was more than willing to do this because, after all, it is the Eiffel Tower. The lady in the hut told me that the ... read more

My trip to Paris day by day: -Day 1 - Day before the trip throat start to misbehave -Day 2 - Vacations start by mississing the first flight after that the domino effect started. Get to Chicago and of course I also missed the second flight. Overpaid (pretty mych bent over and took it) for a rental SUV to drive from Chicago to Detroit to then catch the final flight. Fianally in Detroit (after getting into the bad neighborhoods because the GPS wasnt propery programmed by me) went to return the car which should be a pretty simple thing to do right?? Aparently not in Detroit. Wasted 45 minutes in line. Finally got to the ticket desk and after bending over for a second time was able to get on the plane. By that time my ... read more

Bonjour Everyone, We have been in Paris 5 days now; we leave tomorrow. It has been a terrific visit and we have enjoyed seeing Paris in her autumn colours. Our last visit was in winter and the difference between the seasons is significant. We were prepared for the crowds of tourists because this is the ‘high’ season after the Olympics; however we have not been prepared for the crowds of Parisians who are out and about in the pleasant autumn weather. We arrived on Friday and we decided that we would try to overcome the overnight flight by walking around Paris and reacquainting ourselves with the city. We elected not to take our cameras. Our hotel is a couple of small blocks back from the Champs Elysees and the crowds on the streets are a surprise. ... read more

So today we finally made it into Paris. After a quick train ride we took the underground until we reached Notre Dame. Such an impressive building, but I found the hundreds of birds and all the boats, buses and bikes much more interesting! There were SO many people queuing to get into the Cathedral that we didn't bother. Instead mummy and daddy had chocolate crepes and I had a tube of raisins :-( Apparently the crepes were VERY good but I didn't get to try them. After spending a little time looking at the Cathedral and the buildings surrounding it we walked until we reached the Louvre. On the way we took a few detours and saw the Palais de Justice and the Church of St Germain l'Auxerrois, plus we stopped at a bakery to get ... read more

Our return to Paris was for both business and pleasure! We needed to organise our Indian visas for our trip in December and the annoying thing about the Indian Tourist Visa is that it is valid from the day it's issued, rather than the day of entry into India. So we were unable to organise them before we left as they would have expired before we'd even entered the country! The other annoying thing was that because we were not holders of a French passport, we couldn't opt for the express service and instead had to hang around Paris for "5-10 working days" until our passports (and hopefully visas) were ready for collection. We arrived at the Visa office first thing on a Monday morning and were also advised that there were 2 public holidays during ... read more

The day that I learned that I was hired on at a school for the fall, I called my travel partner Winnie to see if I could convince her to host me in Paris for a few weeks and then slip of to Istanbul for a bit. Lucky for me, she was not hard to convince and we shared another incredible adventure together. Waiting to board the plane in Minneapolis proved a great start to the trip. People were excited to go to Paris! They were paging through their tour guides, talking loudly about plans, and were not trying to contain their giddiness. It was infectious! Appreciating people's exuberance spilled over into my time in Paris. I did not grumble as I needed to dodge a group of tourists gawking at the Louvre or recover from ... read more
