It's funny, I never thought I would write about any of our voyage in retrospect. I thought there was a clear line between travelling, as we did from October till April, and working for 6 months in France. But of course it was just another part of the journey. I guess we have always been tavelling in some way so I intend to keep the journey chronicled, now.... where was I. We arrived in England in April to the same temperature that the air con was set to when we left Mumbai. After some mad frantic days of preparation the van was ready and we set off to France, to sunny Franceuil and our summer job working at Camping Moulin Fort. 34 Euros! That was the first shock 34 Euros for the main toll road to ... read more

Sometimes it’s hard to describe exactly how far away my house is from the university, so today I have a small illustration: When I left the university today, it was sunny—cold, yes (it’s been around freezing all day) but the sun made it alright. However, about halfway home from the university it started snowing. HARD. Before I knew it, gusts of snow were blowing in my face with huge flakes fluttering everywhere. Then, about a block before I reached my house, all the snow STOPPED. The weather dramatically changed TWICE. In other news, the past two days have been pretty good—I’ve been enjoying lounging around in my house with no one else here, spreading out all my stuff over the entirety of the kitchen table and chowing down on all the homemade bread that was left ... read more

Today I experienced two new things on my walk home from class: 1. I was walking along the Boulevard when probably a high school aged kid rung the door bell of a house right in front of me, then darted across the street and hid in the bushes. 2. About five minutes later, I was passed on the sidewalk by someone riding a unicycle. My family left me an orphan on Saturday, so I've been holding down the du Chazaud household toute seule, like a champ. It's actually not that bad--it's kind of like living alone in France, which is pretty cool. It is a pretty big house though, and sometimes I hear noises like someone's walking around in the room next to me, which the first time I was kind of surprised, and then I ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Chenonceaux February 6th 2010

Today was a pretty rainy day, which was disappointing because we went to Chenonceau which is supposed to be one of the most beautiful castles in France because it’s built on a river. It was beautiful, but the water was kind of gross and murky from the rain, which made the castle not look quite as cool. Also the huge front section of the castle is currently being restored and has scaffolding with this huge curtain over it with a picture of what the castle should look like—kind of hilarious, but also kind of disappointing. That being said, I still loved Chenonceau. I want to go back some time, when there are more flowers in the garden and when it’s a beautiful day. The inside of the castle was cool—we didn’t have a personal tour, but ... read more

As a group, we may have collectively overestimated our biking abilities. Since some of us don’t have class Fridays, today we attempted to bike to Villandry, a chateau known for beautiful gardens—it’s only 17 km from Tours, so like 10ish miles. Quick ride, right? No. There was supposed to be a super easy bike bath to follow once we crossed the Cher river, but it was nowhere to be found. So we were lost, slightly south of Tours for a while, Denise, Annie, and Allison ended up turning around because they needed to be home before too late, leaving me, Mackenzie, and Steph’s cousin Adam (who was visiting for the week) to continue to try to find the right path. Luckily it was a beautiful day—perfect for biking except a bit of wind coming straight at ... read more

This weekend was so fun. I already wrote about the Saturday excursion to Amboise, but I haven’t written yet about how Friday night late Marie and Clare (22 and 10 year old sisters) came home for the weekend. Friday afternoon the family had told that Marie and Claire would get home around 10:45 Friday night and that they were both (but especially Claire) looking forward to meeting me! I was in my room that night and I thought that I heard them come in, but I didn’t want to go downstairs to butt in on family time, I was going to wait and see if they told me to come downstairs, but around 11:10, I decided that I should probably stop looking up travel plans for April break and go downstairs to introduce myself. I go ... read more

Today was a fabulous day. However, the start was a little rough—I woke up at 8:56 and was supposed to meet Denise outside my house at 9. I frantically texted her (which actually takes a while on my cell phone here because the only t9 setting it has is in French) telling her I was running “a few” late, but luckily was out the door around 9:07. We treched our habitual 1.1 miles to meet up with the rest of the BEF (Bucknell en France) group to take our first excursion to Amboise! It took about 20 minutes or so to get there, and I was actually appropriately dressed for the expected cold weather (as opposed to the first day where we had to tour of Tours—Mme Fazalley won’t let me live down the fact that ... read more

Last night we went to our first discoteque called xcalibar. We walk by it almost everyday because it’s in Place Plume, and it looked pretty sweet, so we decided to check it out because we don’t have class Fridays. (eeeee!) Sadly, it was not as sweet as it looked. Annie, Denise, Sarah, and I went around 12:30 (you’re really not supposed to anywhere early in France) we paid our 8 euros to get in, only to go down the stairs and find approximately five people there. But, we decided to stick it out for a while. Eventually more people came and we had fun with each other, although we probably will not be going back. After endlessly requesting Lady Gaga to the DJ (and having him play Bad Romance for us, but then played Beyoncé’s VideoPhone, ... read more

Monday was fabulous—I didn’t have class until 4 so I woke up leisurely and went downstairs to help myself to breakfast (yogurt and toast—obviously the bread is the homemade stuff). Then I found a bathroom on the first floor that I didn’t know was there before! Exciting! (A house with three bathrooms—I feel like that’s a lot! And there could potentially be another one attached to the parent’s room, but I feel like that’s one of the those things that I’ll never know for sure…) I met up with Allison, Denise, Maika, and Steph around 2 to check out the art exhibit that’s in the hôtel de ville right now (city hall) which is being advertised all over town—we went and it was sweet, but it was only like a room of modern art things, and ... read more

Today, Beatrice is teaching me how to solve a rubix cube. I’ve been working on it for about two hours now, and have not succeeded without her help (I did it with her about an hour and a half ago and she wrote down the formulas so that I could solve it myself. I’ve come close, only to mess up the last step and then start over again…but I am determined. My host dad told me that I have “courage” which can be translated to kind of mean persistence.) I am DETERMINED to learn how to do this. But I’m taking a break right now. But mark my words, the next time you see me, I will have successfully solved a rubix cube. I’m done with the Institut now! I celebrated by sleeping until 12:30 yesterday—it ... read more
