Ireland was incredible, Scotland was a divine revelation and England was ... ok? Even If I had a blast in London, England in general is totally outmatched by its two neighbors ... from a traveller point of view. I'm glad to be on the continent now, especially for the food ... and a few other things. After a once in a lifetime experience in Scotland, my stay in York and Oxford was a bit of a disappointment. York c'est un peu comme la ville de Quebec : Super beau, meme cute, tres propre ... pi c'est ca! Pour ce qui est de Oxford, c'est probablement mieux y etudier que la visiter. But London on the other hand, was great! In my opinion, it is a bit like New York City : I wouldn't live here but ... read more

The second day in St. Malo, we visited all other places which we couldn't visit on our first day. We wondered around the city wall and spend most of the time window shopping and taking photos. There were a lot of visitors compared to the previous rainy day. Whenever we felt hungry, we ate mussels and chip, then gallets and caramel crepes to the end. During our meal time, we tossed our glasses up filled with cider glasses. The time ran faster than we expected. We headed back to the train station 30 minutes before our departure but we forgot to get our tickets checked only last five minutes before the departure. I ran like a lunatic on the platform and reach the ticket checker to realise that I had the wrong ticket in my hands. ... read more

It was a short escape from the heat in Paris. There were a lot of interesting discoveries to be found in the city of corsairs and somehow we managed to discover most of them by squeezing ourselves into a busy schedule. During this short two days city break, we visited - La Ville Intra-Muros - The château of Saint-Malo, part of which is now the town museum - The Solidor Tower in Saint-Servan is a fourteenth century building which holds a collection tracing the history of voyages around Cape Horn. Many scale models, nautical instruments and objects made by the sailors during their crossing or brought back from foreign ports invoke thoughts of travel aboard extraordinary tall ships at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. - The tomb of the ... read more

Arrived in Saint Marlo on the overnight ferry from Portsmouth. Very smooth crossing. I's great to meet some of other people in the Register at last. Seven Lagonda Rapiers and three Rapiers have made it across for this Rally. Based around the town of Treguier and taking in towns and places such as Quintin, Montcontour, Chatelaundren and Paimpol. 160 cars some of which we would never see in Australia attended and again expertly orgainised by Patrick Rollet and his team.... read more

It was difficult to ever imagining leaving Paris, the city that had just begun to feel like home. However I had wanted to visit Mont Saint Michele, after seeing it in a travel book many years ago I knew that if I had the chance I should see it. So on our last full day in Paris, Katherine and I found a travel agency and booked tickets to Saint-Malo and our return ticket to Florence. Unfortunately there is no other direct train to Florence from France, except through Paris. We had originally wanted to go to Nice and get back to Italy that way, but of course there was yet another strike going on in Italy, possibly the only thing you can always count on to happen on time. So our dreams of seeing the South ... read more

We had a fairly tourist-filled weekend on our trip to northern France. Our bus left Paris at 7am and we headed out to Saint Malo, a city about 4 hours west of Paris. The drive was beautiful, the hills were so green and all the houses were old stone cottages. Upon arriving in Saint Melo, we headed down to walk in the water which was surprisingly blue. It reminded me of water I would see in southern France, rather than in northern France. I didn't have to avoid any barnacles or seaweed, although the limpets were treacherous. It felt so good to be near water again. The streets here were filled with ice cream, crepes, cute french babies, and beautiful architecture. I've already been named the "baby stealer" on this trip, but I can't help it, ... read more

The plan: Four cyclists from London make their way to the Loire valley, and cycle and camp and cycle and eat cheese, drink wine, visit chateaus, slaughter the language. Our itinerary included Angers, Saumur, Chinon, Azay-le-Rideau, Loches, and Blois. To keep costs down while allowing us to procrastinate planning, we got to France via train to Portsmouth, overnight ferry to St. Malo, train (TER allows full cycles, not TGV) to Angers, and then similarly for the return, train to Caen, overnight ferry, and train back to London. England was suffering from its stereotypical weather of clouds and sporadic rain, and the ferry crossing was rough enough to make our viewing of Prince Caspian in the ferry cinemas very unpleasant. The cabins were all booked, so we had reclining chairs, but we observed seasoned travelers who laid ... read more

We spent 11 days in Paris, far longer than we have spent, or are likely to spend, in any one city on this journey. We loved Paris (who doesn’t?), and got to do and see everything we wanted. We saw the Louvre, Musee D’Orsay, and the Rodin Museum. We had dinner at an outdoor bistro in Montmartre. We went down in the catacombs (well, Erin and her Mom did) and then to the top of the Eiffel Tower. We took a boat cruise along the Seine. We visited the antique market, the flower market, and the bird market. And we walked in so many different neighborhoods. Yet, Paris is a city so big, that like New York, London and other megacities, we realized it would take many months, if not years, to really get to know ... read more

...............and they’re off!! After three weeks back in the UK to catch up on football, family and friends (not necessarily in that order) it was time for us to embark on the third and final leg of the ACDC World Tour ’07 / ‘08. The plan this time is to travel around Europe, a continent we’ve largely neglected previously mainly due to our preference for longer haul holidays. For the next three months or so we’re going to use our own car to explore it, avoiding the “city break” destinations wherever possible as, in theory at least, we can visit these anytime. Advance planning has been kept deliberately low key to allow fluidity and it will be interesting to see how the enjoyment and experiences provided by our home continent compares with those we’ve had ... read more
