We're currently in Bordeaux which is quite famous for its...well Bordeaux! Bordeaux is larger than most of the other cities we have visited (except obviously Paris) and much of its main streets are closed off to cars and have been pedestrianised. We're probably a five minute walk outside of the city centre which isn't too bad. The buildings here are a bit darker in colour than those in Paris. We found out today that about ten years ago they were quite black from the pollution, however there was a big effort to clean them all and pretty up the city. Bordeaux isn't as pretty as Paris but it's a bit of a University town and it appears that it is more of a party place (not that I'd know given that I'm with the oldies). There's ... read more

TRAINS TO SPAIN Day 10 Spent the whole day in transit to San Sebastian, Spain. Nantes to Bordeaux. Bordeaux to Hendaye. Hendaye to San Sebastian. Around both Nantes and Bordeaux were countless vineyards. For miles and miles there were vines. The landscape changed drastically between Bordeaux and Hendaye. It began with the vines then changed to lakes and then to almost marsh land and finally as you approached Hendaye it became very mountainous. I finally arrived at Hendaye and took a short local train to San Sebastian. As I sat on the train it began pouring rain. And not just a little but loads. I got off the train in San Sebastian but because my train was late I got there after dark and after the tourist info centre closed, which meant no map to ... read more

Good morrow to you readers, it's nice to see that you're back again. We woke to our first frost the morning of the 12th at the Total truck stop near Peregreaux, and it was a beautiful blue sky overhead. The windscreen was covered in ice and it was quite chilly. If that wasn't cool enough, there were two white nondescript trucks being guarded in the opposite car park by about 30 Gendarmerie, who I think are like region police. They were heavily armed with H & K G36 machine guns and armadillo-like riot gear. We once again tried to look innocent (hard to do being a filthy backpacker in a van covered in pink and green graffiti), but they didn't even give us a strange look. As we were discussing what might be in the trucks, ... read more

I can see why Bordeaux is now an Unesco World Heritage Site. It's stunning! Lots of 18th century architecture and a beautiful river to walk along which is particularly nice as the suns's setting. Sadly it was raining buckets the whole time I was in Bordeaux, so things looked a bit grey (actually kind of reminded me of London). The city is known for its wine, but alas I only drank the cheapest plonk I could find so I can't comment on its quality! I stayed with my second ever Couch Surfing host Maxime and his flat mate Paul. They are very cool people! We listened to heaps of great music. They took me to a costume party with a 'funky' theme. Didn't exactly have much in my pack to choose from but (unsuprisingly) I was ... read more

On Tuesday we landed near a tin shed in the south of France also known as the Bergerac airport! Mum and dad's friend from college, Lynne picked us up and then drove us to their huge farmouse where we would stay for three nights. When we arrived we were met by her children Zenya, Devlyn and Sebastyn. They showed us around the house (I slept in the loft which was cool) as well as their many barns and sheds. The next morning we went to a nearby village where we got baguettes. In the afternoon we drove to Monflanquin, which was a typical village frm this area with cobblestone steets, and quaint shps and houses. It was a 1 hour drive when we got there -it was boiling. we had a look around the town before ... read more

Bordeaux was the overnight stop from Paris on our way to Pamplona. Had time to see the main sights and down a few more Kronenbourgs. A really pretty city, but alas just not enough time to enjoy it fully.... read more

My day started off with another long training run. This time is was 18 miles. I’ve about had it with the long runs, but at least this one was through Bordeaux wine country. I set out around 7:30, heading Southeast towards a point with which I was familiar. Around the second mile, I saw some girl out for a run and paced off her for a few miles. This was a huge help. Heading mostly north, she wove us through several vineyards until she finished. Either that or she “fake finished” to get away from the perceived stalker that followed her for four miles. I continued into the hills to the north of Blaye, passing by several more vineyards, a couple churches and some cemeteries. That was about all I saw on this peaceful Saturday morning. ... read more

On my train ride to the Bordeaux region this morning, I finished reading Into the Wild. The book is a non-fictional account of the events leading up to and after the tragic death of Chris McCandless. McCandless was a brilliant young man, who, after graduating from college, abandoned his family and took on a nomadic life of his own. He eventually made his way to Alaska and attempted to live off the land in the summer of 1992. He failed. After reading the book, I couldn’t help but compare myself to McCandless. While there are many differences - McCandless was much smarter, he seemed to face the unknown with less apprehension, he clearly had some mommy/daddy issues and I have no desire to abandon all and set off as a nomad - I saw my adventurous, ... read more

So here we are on the road again, this time with Stuart and Stella (our hopefully trusty steed). Leaving the grey and gloom of Blighty behind we settle in for the overnight ferry. Uneventful, the Captain warned of rough seas but we braved the restaurant and slept like babies. Things take a turn for the worse in Nantes where our first meal, in this country renowned for its food, is a kebab. I blame the bar we stumble across where the only available drinking receptacle requires you to hold it at arms length and catch the resulting spout of liquid. Takes a bit of practice but we teach the students hows its done (never challenge a man who has no job to get up for). We get the gourmet dining back on course on day 2 ... read more
