Today was a bit less of a busy day. In the morning, after breakfast, I went on a walk and took 130 photos of the railings/balustrades that adorn many of the windows in Bordeaux. There are hundreds and thousands, I'm sure! Many are unique and I thought it would make a good composite poster when I return home. I can just see it printed, framed and put on my kitchen wall! I'll post a few of them today. I walked for about an hour and found myself at the Marché des Capusins where we went the first day I was in Bordeaux. I bought a beautiful hibiscus for J-F and Colette to put in their garden. After I returned from my walk Jean-François and I hopped onto the bikes and rode off to have lunch at ... read more

What a day! What a day! Of course, I started out with my constant breakfast after sleeping ALL night! Finally, a night of undisturbed sleep. I have been waiting for that! After breakfast, Jean-François and I walked a few blocks to the Musée des Compagnons du Tour de France. This is a museum at a school for traditional artisan carpenters, bricklayers or stone cutters, cabinet makers and/or locksmiths. The training at this school is based on the handing down of the craftsmanship. The workmen make a journey of their profession called "Tour de France" (nothing to do with the bicycle race!) because they travel from worksite to worksite during their training to become proficient. Each year there is a competition open to every French citizen to showcase the best of the French workmen, but the winners ... read more

Today was cloudy and cool....just what I needed after the 32C yesterday! I am still waking up in the middle of the night. I sure hope that stops sooner than later. I got up today at about 8:30 and had my usual delicious cheese and bread with coffee breakfast. I'm attaching a photo of the cheese board which my friend labeled for me. My favourites were the Reblochon, Morbier and Saint-Nectaire fermier. After breakfast, Jean-François and I walked to the market to buy a few things for lunch preparation and then we hopped on the bikes and rode to the butchers to buy some lamb, paté de campagne and rillette (VERY fattening and VERY good!). Jean-François took me to the tram to show me how to use it and then we did a circuit of sight-seeing ... read more

What a beautiful day today in Bordeaux. It was very hot but very interesting, fun and active. We started the day by hopping on the bicycles and riding the short distance to the market to buy cheese. We bought 5 varieties and then walked around the market a bit but it was not a market day so it wasn't very busy and some of the vendors were not there. But, still, it was a delightful French market all the same. We came home and visited for a while and then hopped into the car and drove out to the Chateau du Smith Haut Lafitte. www.smith-haut-lafitte.com (I believe) Beautiful buildings and at this chateau they have a restaurant, hotel and spa which specializes in "vinotherapy" (Try Googling that!) We had a lovely lunch and then we came ... read more

Today was mainly a travelling day. Got up early, had breakfast and we were on the road by 8am. We stopped at Chartres in the morning and visited their cathedral. It has some sections that date back to the 11th century (I think). I also bought some stamps at the post office and had to have the whole conversation in French and I succeeded so was quite excited about that. We stopped again just on the motorway for lunch and then ended up getting to Bordeaux at around 6pm. Mum and I went to the shopping centre next to the hotel and had a little look around. I bought the first Harry Potter book in French and am going to attempt to read it (I think Im being a bit too ambitious though). Dinner was just ... read more

YAY! I made it in one piece....24 hours door to door! The 4 hour flight from Calgary to Montreal was good except the landing. There was a LOT of turbulence on the descent and the landing. I did not like that one little bit! But I landed and actually got to the next gate for the flight to Paris with about 15 minutes to spare. I must say, the service with Air Canada is SORELy lacking. I wasted 10 of my precious 45 minutes between flights trying to find an agent who would answer my question as to what gate I had to get to. Well, water under the bridge. The 6 1/2 flight to Paris was smooth and uneventful. The landing was good but they taxied forever to the gate to disembark! In the end, ... read more

June 26, 27, 2008 Bordeaux, France We arrived in Bordeaux in time on Thursday to take the local tram to the center of town to have a look around. Turns out our timing was perfect for me. The annual “Bordeaux Fete Le Vin” ( Wine Festival ) was just getting started and the promenade along the Garonne River was set up for wine tasting from all the areas producing “ Bordeaux “wine. This is a very well organized affair. With the purchase of a wine glass ( with carry case ) and a coupon book you get to try about 10 of any of the hundreds of Bordeaux wines being promoted. We enjoyed a few hours roaming around and will do some more exploring in the city tomorrow. Weather has been great here and in fact ... read more
