Ok - I haven't been to Finland and it was on my list, but now it's a for-sure-soon spot... 7hrs is too much of a tease. I'll be back soon - next summer or the one after. So, instead of paying 15USD for a shuttle to the city centre (ugh) we caught the tram like a 4min walk from the boat for 2.90euro which they obviously conveniently do not mention as an option on the boat lol. First stop was the one thing Mom requested: Chapel of Silence / Kamppi Chapel. It's the big stand-alone structure in the middle of the city with super thick walls, benches inside (like pews) and a bunch of giant cushions if you want to sit on the floor. We arrived in Helsinki 20 minutes before midnight. It had just become night - the light fading from the west as we flew into the airport. It would be light again here in less than 4 hours. If you like daylight, this was the place to be on your summer city break. Helsinki is actually the second most northerly capital city in the world behind Reykjavik in Iceland and just pipping the capital of Norway, Oslo, into third. Close neighbours, Tallinn (Estonia) and Stockholm (Sweden) complete the top five. Helsinki Airport was humming even at this late hour. Flights arriving and bodies lying around waiting for the early morning departures. We have now been in Helsinki for a couple of days before departing tomorrow evening on a ferry (Bird says surprise Vicki and Carol Ann) for St. Petersburg, Russia. Even bumped into our ship as we departed Tallin, we'll show you. Helsinki doesn't have a great number of sights. For the considerable majority of it's history Finland was the property of someone else (Sweden and Russia). It was not even founded until the mid sixteenth century (by the Swedes who owned the place and wanted to compete with the trading city of Tallin). It remained a speck on the map until the nineteenth century. Thus, there is little history here. However, the people are wonderful. Bonjour à tous, Je confesse ce soir d’avoir été réjoui de la défaite des Russes hier. Merci aux Croates de m’avoir vengé. Pour quelqu’un qui voulait diminuer les km je n’ai pas vraiment réussi. Mais ils étaient plutôt agréables par rapport aux jours derniers. Et cerise sur le gâteau je n’ai pas utilisé les essuie-glaces de la journée. Je quitte Tampere, qui ne va pas me laisser un grand souvenir. Sauf peut être l’anecdote du souper hier au soir. En me rendant à l’hôpital, non à l’hôtel de l’hôpital, j’avais repéré un restaurant, pas très loin, en fait c’était un kebab, mais écrit en finnois. Pas pour moi. Bonjour à tous, Je n’ai pas voulu mettre en titre échec Russie. Sans jeu de mots. J’ai 250 km pour me rendre à la frontière. Comme les matins précédents, temps couvert, pluie pas loin, rien ne change de côté là. Mais avant ça, comme je l’avais dit hier j’étais dans une station de ski, qui en fait est également le centre d’entraînement des fondeurs finlandais. Ils doivent recevoir des délégations étrangères, et ce matin des jeunes chinois. Habituellement j’ai la dent dure avec eux dû à leur comportement. Mais ce matin au petit-déjeuner, ces momes d’une quinzaine d’années, avaient un comportement exemplaire, polis, éduqués, remarquables. Rien à voir avec les parents.
