Wow! We do I start.... Prague has just been enchanting... such a beautiful place and the most amazing buildings you will see anywhere and such a beautiful feel about the city wherever you walk! Its such a special place because it has remained relatively unscathed from World War II bombings this was because planes didn't have the range and also because bombing targets tended to be in Germany and industrial centres. Our train trip from Budapest to Prague was pretty good, though it did run about an hour late, but the journey of approx 8 hrs was quite nice and then we stopped at a few cities along the way, Vienna, Brno and couple of other small ones and then onto Prague. We have been using Bolt Taxis and they have been great, cheaper than most ... read more

Took CK Shuttle to Cesky Kumlov from Prague. Cesky Krumlov is a UNESCO heritage site about a three hour drive south of Prague in a mountainous region. It is a well preserved city of 13,000 people with most of the structures from the 14th and 15th century. A river meanders through the middle of the city. Cesky Krumlov has the second largest castle in the Czech Republic and sits on top of the hill in the middle of the city. Why is that? It always makes it so much more difficult to get up there!! The streets are all cobblestone which also makes it difficult to walk. Most people take one day tours to the city and spend 3 to 4 hours here. Before Covid, up to two million people would visit a year. We decided ... read more

We finally arrived in Prague after 24 hours of traveling. We had a few issues getting here due to lightning in Orlando resulting in a hour and half delay. Also had a hour and half delay in DC due to a bad auxiliary power unit but ended up getting to Prague ontime and with our luggage! Our scheduled 4 hour layovers saved our butts. Was able to use the United Polaris club which was a God send since the food on the plane left a lot to be desired. Stayed at a gorgeous hotel built in 1518 (Alchymist Grand Hotel). Walked up to see the castle complex. Was really impressed by the gothic St Vitus cathedral and the view of the city. The stained glass in St Vitus used very small pieces of glass for a ... read more

This evening we booked a dinner and show with my favorite booking agent VIATOR.COM. The Czech Traditional Folklore Show including dinner was available from Viking but due to overbooking the Viking version was booked solid so I turned to Viator and, boy, am I glad we did! I received a notice to meet our driver at 6:40 in the front lobby. At the precise time advised a very well dressed man in suite and tie approached me and asked , "Phil?" I said "Yes" and he offered, "Right this way; your private car is right outside. We followed him to a sleek, black, brand new, Mercedes Benz deluxe van! We were showed inside and off we went. Had we booked with the Viking team we would have been two people in a huge crowd of others ... read more

And just like that, vacation is over and the tour begins! Anyone who has ever been on a tour knows what I mean. A tour is not vacation. A vacation is leasurly days, late mornings, open schedules, and rest. A tour is packed days, early mornings, and hectic schedules. If you want to see a great deal of sights, be taken to places with guides, and learn about history and such, take a tour. If you want to relax, take a vacation. They are very different. So today is tour day one. We were up at 5:45 AM and down to breakfast by 6:30. There are two Viking ships in this hotel so breakfast was hosting about 400 people who all needed to leave at approximately the same time. If you want to be sure to ... read more

Tonight features dining and entertainment. I booked a special Historical Fantasy Show using Viator (my favorite booking website). The plan calls for a traditional Czech dinner, all the wine and beer you want, a full 5-Course meal, and entertainment. Sounds fun, so let's go! We asked at the front dest the best way to get to the restaurant. They said go out the door turn left and left again. Walk past the Astronomical Clock and 5 minutes from there is the restaurant. Great, 30 minutes later, after several wrong turns and going in the wrong direction once again, we arrived at our destination, U Pavouka at the Korma Restaurant. Dinner was scheduled for 8 PM. We arrived a little early. We left a full 45 minutes early to compensate for getting lost, so we had some ... read more

After yesterday's exciting dinner, we were exhausted. We decided... we didn't actually decide anything; we just slept in. Hey we are on vacation, after all. So we finally roused out of slumber about 8:30 and were dressed, packed, and ready to check out of trhe Iron Gate Hotel and into our cruise hotel, The Prague Mariott. A word about the Iron Gate. It is older, very centrally located and filled with old world charm. We had a little issue with our room at first. We had a single room with a queen bed, nice and comfortable. The problem was the A/C did not work. After several vain attempts to get it fixed, we were told it was broken and moved to a private suite! We now had two large rooms and our own sitting room in ... read more

Prague is a very old town built back in the 800's as a fortified city on the Vltava River. The old castle sits on a hill overlooking the city that grew up around it. Today our plan was to walk around the city, get our bearings, see some sites, eat some local cuisine, and just enjoy. The only thing on our schedule was a Ghost and Legends Tour we booked through Viator at 8:30 this evening, so the day was ours. Our first order of business was to find the Old Town Center. We left the hotel turned left and walked through a tunnel into an alley and there, in front of us, was the Old City Center. Now this is a wide open space filled with restaurants, shops of every description, bars, and so much ... read more

We slept in a bit this morning all the way to 8:30 - almost as if we were on vacation! Yesterday was tireing but was well worth it. On our journey to the Charles Bridge yesterday, I discovered that on the Vltava River they run some afternoon lunch cruises. You would think that since we are going on an 8 day cruise in two days we would not find this enticing but you would be dead wrong! Our Viking cruise is on the Main River so, when we were offered the opportunity to cruise on two diffent rivers, of course, we decided to go. Today's plan was to sleep in, check; leave the hotel about 10 AM, check; and arrive at the cruise ticket office about 10:15. Swing and a miss here. We asked our concierge ... read more
