This evening we booked a dinner and show with my favorite booking agent VIATOR.COM. The Czech Traditional Folklore Show including dinner was available from Viking but due to overbooking the Viking version was booked solid so I turned to Viator and, boy, am I glad we did!
I received a notice to meet our driver at 6:40 in the front lobby. At the precise time advised a very well dressed man in suite and tie approached me and asked , "Phil?" I said "Yes" and he offered, "Right this way; your private car is right outside. We followed him to a sleek, black, brand new, Mercedes Benz deluxe van! We were showed inside and off we went. Had we booked with the Viking team we would have been two people in a huge crowd of others in a large bus.
Our driver Petr drove safely and efficiently around the outskirts of Prague, providing a running commentary of what we were seeing and some insight about life in Prague. Petr was well groomed, highly respectful, knowledgeable, and just a nice person overall. We soon arrived at the exclusive location, Folklore Gardens and Restaurant.
We were told this was one
of three competing locations that did a similiar type of show and dinner. We were also told this was the larger venue and provided the best show and accomodations. Our Viking group went to one of the other locations, so I hope to compare the experience other travelers from the Green Bus had to see which one was better.
We arrived at the parking lot and our driver accompanied us to the front door of the restaurant. He signed us in, served us a welcome drink, and made sure we had the best accomodations. He could not have done any better as we were literally the first table off stage left. We could touch the dancers and had a perfect view of the show. Our table was set for 6 but only 4 were seated so we had a great table, plenty of room, and the perfect location.
First, the food. There was all manner of drink. Soft drinks, wines, beer, juices of many sorts, and iced water. The food began with a hot potato and mushroom soup. I started to think some one in Prague was trying to kill me. This was my second dinner with mushrooms
to which I am allergic! After the soup came the main course. There was a roast chicken leg, a thick slice of Czech ham, another thick slice of pork loin, mashed potato with butter, and roasted potato. To this weas added some Czech cole slaw and fresh bread with an artichoke spread. Beer a plenty rounded out the main meal. For desert we had espresso, and a home made apple struddle with whipped cream, and I don't mean cool whip!
The show itself was superb. There were two violins, a stand-up base, and a dulcimer from the 15th century. They were very talented and seemed to be playing off each other in a manner that showed they, too, were having fun. To the musical instruments were added a female lead singer and four dancers. The music was local Czech folk tunes, the dances were traditional, and the quality was excellent. They played to the crowd, getting us to sing and even dance on the stage. We shared a table with two folks from Peru now living in Belgium. Nearly at the end of the show the gentleman asked if he could sing a few songs and they said, of
course. So he got up and sang, "Besame Mucho" and "La Bamba" which got the entire room singing with 20 people on the stage dancing. Overall, the experience was 5 star.
Our driver Petr arrived at the perfect time and once again escorted us to the Mercedes. We soon learned that Petr was not only our driver but he booked the locale and made sure we enjoyed the evening. He is an independant contractor setting up various types of tours in Prague and other locales. So once again VIATOR came through. So, if you are traveling, give them a chance. I am positive you will be well taken care of and save a few bucks in the process. Keep on traveling.
