A week or so before we left home to come to Prague we saw a program on public TV about the Plitvice region of Croatia. The scenery was absolutely stunning. We had never heard of the area. Rather than use the word over Platvice over and over the narrator called this region the area of the falling lakes. As we watched the program we said to each other, "We have just got to go there while we are in Prague." Rather than my trying to describe this area do a search on Plitvice, Croatia and look at some of the pictures. Anyway, Bill's sister, Dot, is coming for a visit. "This is the time we should go to Plitvice and take her along," Nancy said. I agreed and off I headed downtown to find a travel ... read more

One of the real pleasures we have had during our stay here is meeting volunteer workers from all over Europe. Recently three volunteers, Mariam, Bob and Don, arrived from Scotland. Their job, to paint windows and rooms. Bob and Don agree, Mariam is a great painter and has taught them some new tricks. Who ways old dogs can't learn new tricks? At breakfast one morning they said, "Mariam's father runs a bicycle shop. He can do everything and do it well. As Mariam grew up she followed him around and he taught her. She is a very talented young woman. Mariam is now a nurse and gave up her holiday to come to IBTS and paint. Nancy-Bob and Mariam left me with a task. Don didn't go home with them but rather stayed to help other ... read more

I suppose most of the capitals of Europe are like Prague, history meets you at ever turn. Most, however, do not contain so much history within a comfortable walking distance. Several weeks ago we were walking through a part of the Little Quarter and saw several buildings. On one was a brass plate. The only word we could make out was Malta. A flag hung over the doorway giving it the appearance of an embassy. Later, while reading a guidebook, I discovered that several centuries ago this section of Prague was owned by the Knights of Malta. They were a powerful force. This area is now called the Maltese Square. The Japanese embassy is now housed in one of the palaces in this area. I especially like the iron work in the main gate to one ... read more

Bach’s Requiem The Church of St. Nicholas sits in the middle of the Little Quarter. With its large dome it is quite a landmark. Construction on St. Nicholas began in 1703 and the finishing touches were made in 1769. As we walked past we saw that Bach’s Requiem was scheduled to be performed at 7:00 this evening. “Do you want to go?” Nancy asked. “Why not?” I replied. We walked up the steps and bought two tickets. It was 6:00 at that time and we had not eaten our evening meal yet. Nancy-Bill had given me the money and I bought the tickets. Just as I finished handing over the money and got the tickets in my hand, someone opened the church door. I belatedly realized we were going to be sitting for an hour in ... read more

One of our goals today was to see the Church of St. Michael. We have seen pictures of the church, but had not actually seen the church. This small 18th century wooden church was moved to Prague from a village in the Ukraine. I was fascinated with the roofing shingles. They are small wooden shingles that are about two inches across, about five inches long and perhaps half an inch thick. To me they make a beautiful pattern on the church. The church is in Kinsky Garden which is right beside Petrin Park. In fact it is hard to know when you leave one and enter the other. Both are on the big hill, or should I call it a small mountain that rises on the west side of the Vltava river above the Little Quarter of ... read more

The walk up the east side of the hill in Pekrin Park is a long walk. There are places where the path is very steep, but there are interesting places along the way. On top of the hill are an observatory, a mirror maze, concessions shops, food shops, gardens, part of the old wall and other interesting places.... read more

We left Vojan Park and walked past the western end of the Charles Bridge and then through the neighborhood beside Certovka, the Devil’s Canal. Legend has it that the name dates back to Medieval days when a very ill tempered woman lived by this small off-shoot of the Vltava river. The Devil’s Canal is the western boundary of Kampa Island. In times past it was used as a mill race and at least one old water wheel is still there. We crossed one of the walkers bridges onto Kampa Island. This is where the Prague marathon ended two weeks ago. Walking for several hours brings on hunger and by this time we were looking for a restaurant. There is no shortage of restaurants. Rather it was simply a matter of deciding at which one to stop ... read more
