To be honest, I’ve been trying very hard to sum up my five days in the Czech Republic for you in a somewhat concise way and having a terrible time of it - I think this one's just gonna be long. Lenka (Czech), Pavel (Czech) and Agne (Lithuanian) were my travel companions on the nearly eight hour trip to Brno on Thursday morning the 12th. Agne and I were invited by Pavel over the long Pentecost weekend to come to his home and see a bit of another side of Europe. I met nearly all of Pavel’s family, who are all the kind of people to say “it’s very nice to meet you! Can I feed you dinner?” And I met a few of Pavel’s friends, too. I say a few because he seems to know ... read more

Today Nancy, Denitza, one of the CAT students from Bulgaria and I went to the Prague International Book Fair. Denitza was interested as her father is in the publishing business in Bulgaria. Nancy and I were simply interested in seeing the books and the library materials on display. Mirka had tickets and told us she would meet us at the ticket booth between 11:45 and 12:00 noon. The book fair was held in a beautiful exhibition building that was built for the 1891 exhabition. I have not researched it, but I expect it was something like a worlds fair. The building sits on a large plot of land, beside a huge park. The park used to be the royal deer park. It doesn't seem very sporting to me to have deer confined in a park and ... read more

The French would never starve here. I have never been anyplace where there are so many snails. These are not just little snails, these fellows and gals grow to be BIG snails. You gotta be careful on the sidewalks here and on the 48 infamous steps leading from the lower campus level to the upper level. If you don't watch suddenly you will hear a nasty crunching noise and there it is, sidewalk snail pizza. Yuck. Messy on the bottoms of your shoes also. However I must admit the snails are much more attractive than the slugs we have at home. ... read more

We passed a big milestone today entering the last book in English into the computer. Now the only books left are those that are in some language other than English. How many books have we entered into the system since we arrive way back in January? I have no idea other than it has been thousands. Did it feel good when the last key stroke was made? Surely you jest in asking that question. Now on to other tasks.... read more

Today was a summer day, bright sunshine with the temperature in the mid to high 80's. The Internet says it will rain, beginning tomorrow and continuing until the weekend. About mid-afternoon I walked to where Nancy was working and said, "Let's grab a sandwich at Crococillies and then go back to the park with the great view of Prague. We can eat and then walk. The guidebook shows another spot that is supposed to give a good view." Nancy groaned as she was TIRED, but decided maybe it was not really a terrible idea. We closed the library at five. This was our day to close up at the end of the day. After changing our clothes we headed to the Jeneralka bus stop and headed downtown. Crocodilles is a chain of sandwhich shops here in ... read more

All you have to do to feel really ignorant is to travel to a country where you know a little of their history and almost nothing about their artists, musicians and writers. Today another incident happened that gave me that familiar feeling of ignorance. As we walked through the Royal Gardens today we suddenly found ourself in front of a memorial to Julius Zeyer. I do not know about any of you who are reading this travelblog, but I had never heard of this man. I assumed from the statue that he was a writer. I must confess this was merely a guess to myself on this. Since returning to the seminary I have checked and indeed Mr. Zeyer was a writer who lived from 1841 to 1901 and that he wrote epic poetry based on ... read more

As we walked through the Royal Gardens enjoying the plants and spring flowers, occasionally we were greeted with great views, each building on the other until we stumbled onto the best view of the Charles Bridge and Old Town Prague that we have seen. We were walking along when Nancy said, "The only bad thing is there's no place to eat in this part of the park and I am HUNGRY. " Looking ahead I saw a small, but very fancy building. At first I thought it was just that, a fancy building, but then I saw they had a menu board beside some steps. "There," I said, "we can get something there." As we walked up to read the menu ,the scenes in the pictures came into view and drew us like a magnet draws ... read more

Last year, before we flew to Prague to be part of a hiking Elderhostel group, we saw a picture of the Karlstein Castle. "If we do nothing else I want to go to this castle," Nancy said. It wasn't because I had seen a picture of the castle either. It was because I had been reading a book written right after World War II by a young British woman who was a frequent visitor to Prague. She had talked about the short pleasant train ride and how easy it was to get out to the castle. Last summer I had supposed that, like the USA, the Czech transportation system had lost most of its convenient trains. So I didn't push to try to figure out how to go to the Castle. I'm so glad the Czechs ... read more
