we were a little nervous about today because we realized on our schedule that we had 3 lectures plus a visit to the musuem of communism (we just thought it sounded like a lot!) but everything about today ended up being really enjoyable. after breakfast (they now have peach juiceboxes! yummy!!) and got ready, we were off to class. it was a marketa lecture today (yay!! we love her and think she should come be a professor at mizzou)- she talked with us a little bit about czech foreign policy, especially about joining the EU. our next lecture was actually this guy who had come to speak in our other class, so we were a little annoyed at first. but actually, his presentation this time was more interesting-- apparently he was able to be more frank ... read more

Today was another typical day of class. We had a rather boring lecture in the morning about civil society (whatever that is...) and a guest lecture in the afternoon about marketing and consumers in the Czech Republic. The second lecture was especially interesting to me. In between lectures we went shopping. I did a little more souvenier shopping and some of the other girls bought clothes. We hung out this afternoon and took naps. Dinner was KFC on the go (my first American fast food here). I swear there are more KFCs here than in the US. After dinner we watched Mean Girls in the room, which was good times. Tomorrow will begin our last full week in the Czech Republic. In some ways, it seems like we just got here, but in other ways it ... read more

Well certainly the new tourist hub of the East. So many people crammed into the old part of town. The prague castle was expansive and gorgeous and walking for a few kilometres in the other direction I was able to find a random church up on a hill with some embattlements overlooking the river which was very beautiful. The main highlight of Prague was probably the people we met. A couple of aussies, Melinda and Nathan, as well as 3 Brits who we spent countless hours playing cards, watching them drink and eventually regurgitate copious amounts of Absinth, as well as going to numerous bars on our quest for a night out. Roxy was a cool converted theatre that we went to a couple of times. Cam and I also went to see the Worlds Fastest ... read more

today wasn't the fullest day- we had a malvina lecture in the morning (so it wasn't the most exciting...), then about an hour and a half break in which we went to H&M (i bought a cute purple/brown striped tank for $7!) and got some lunch. then we went back to school for a guest lecture. it was actually pretty interesting-- he was from this research company, and actually tailored his presentation a little bit for us since we're advertising students (well not me, but you know...) so he talked about brands, brand loyalties, etc.-- then he tied it into the CR and talked with us about reasons why czechs are less brand loyal than other western nations. after the lecture we went to tesco (this crazy awesome grocery/department store) for a bit, and then came ... read more

Okay, okay, everyone keeps bugging me with the question, “Which city was your favourite?” I originally was going to say Vienna; that is, I was going to say Vienna until I arrived in Prague. Prague is everything that people say it is. It’s absolutely gorgeous. I had heard how pretty Prague was, but I also heard that its allure has been diminished due to British stags taking over the city (due to cheap flights and cheap beer). If you can ignore the annoying Brit boys, you cannot deny the beauty of this city. The buildings actually are so nice, they really do look fake. I kept thinking that it was a movie set filled with false front buildings. It had a very Disney-esque feel to it. After admiring the beautiful buildings, I met up with my ... read more

Today we got to sleep in before making our way to the Jewish Quarter. First we went to lunch in Old Town...pizza again (we have a hard time deciding what we want to eat). We wandered around Old Town Square again. We finally got to the Jewish Quarter. We bought a ticket that got us into four synagogues, a cemetery, and another building. Maxine served as a wonderful tour guide through the museums in the Synagogues, letting us know what everything was and saving us the trouble of reading the displays (luckily, there was some English). The first synagogue was the Pinkas Synagogue. It had the names of every Czech person who died in the Holocaust. The names had to be written three times, re-written once because of the Communists and once because of flooding. There ... read more

today was our day to visit the jewish quarter! since it's sunday, we decided to sleep in a little bit and leave the dorm at around noon. so of course instead of sleeping late i woke up at like 8:30 (silly, predictable me). we went for breakfast at around 9:30, and then i played around on the computer for a while (i downloaded a free episode on iTunes of this cool new show on bravo called "tabloid wars"- pretty neat show) and actually did my reading marketa gave us. (i was glad to do that, so i could at least feel productive lol) so we left the dorm and headed for mustek so we could grab a quick lunch and then head over to the jewish quarter. i was really looking forward to visiting (and kind ... read more

My friend Mickey will be happy to know that I am officially fluent in public transportation. She once commented in the office that “Christy’s version of public transportation is a taxi.” (I don’t deny it). Yes, I have taken the occasional BART ride to and from the airport and I did take the bus once (with a chaperon) in my five years in San Francisco, but now I am fully versed in the language of trains, busses, metros, subways, undergrounds, ferries and now cable cars! Today (again pretending this is present day), traveling from Switzerland to Prague, I took two cable cars, two busses, three trains, one plane and one taxi . . . all by 2:30 in the afternoon! When I was traveling with Wendy, she said every time I go to a new city, ... read more

After my misadventure on the train, and the subsequent drawn=out experience with the Police, I finally managed to check-in at the apartment I had rented, only to find out that, despite paying more here than for anywhere else I stayed on this trip, it was really below average in terms of the standard (I think I was just unlucky.....things are generally cheap here). So needless to say, my stay here did not start off on a positive note. But I REALLY wanted to see this city, so I was prepared to give it a go. My next concern was that the city may not live up to the hype - as I had heard so much about Prague, and built an expectation prior to arriving.......but this fear was soon dispelled. Put simply.......I had a great time. ... read more

we decided a few days ago (because we like to have a set plan) that we were going to visit terezin on saturday, and the jewish quarter on sunday. so last night we made a plan to leave at 9:15, ride on the metro to the bus station and then take the hour bus ride there. we hoped to make a 10:00 bus, and then figured we would just take as long as we wanted there and then come back in the late afternoon. i was really interested to visit this concentration camp, because i had read about how this was the nazis' model "jewish town" and that it was fixed up for propoganda purposes. rick steves said that they even feature films that the nazis played for the red cross to convince them that they ... read more
