Today was our visit to Terezin. All ten of us from Mizzou went. For a little background, Terezin was a Gestapo Police Prison during World War II under the Nazis. Most inmates included people resisting the Nazi regime. This prison served as mostly a stop-over, as most prisoners were later sent to Nazi courts, other prisons, or concentration camps. While the Jews were not the only group of people here, they were treated the harshest. Terezin served as the "model Jewish town," a place that the Nazis would show off to international groups as propaganda. It was very hard to believe that a place that killed over 10,000 people was one of the "good" concentration camps. We took a bus to Terezin, and the bus station was a little bit of an adventure. We wanted to ... read more

Today we got to sleep in, we didn't have class until 11:15. It was wonderful! In class we had two lectures, one good, one completely boring. We had an hour-long break, at which time the five of us went to eat dinner and Maxine and I went souveneir shopping (again). I bought a lot of stuff (including stuff for me), so I'm actually almost done. After our break, we went back to class to watch a Czech film called Pelisky. It was about three families living in the same apartment complex during the 60's, so under communism. It was really interesting. We went back to the dorms for a few hours and then got ready to go out. yesterday we met up with some students that Marketa had taught earlier this summer, who were from University ... read more

so i'm postdating this entry, because last night we stayed out kinda late and i didn't feel like writing before going to sleep- since we're leaving in a few minutes to visit terezin. so i'll start working on yesterday's now... we didn't have class until 11:15, so we slept in a little bit which was very nice. we listened to marketa lecture about the "normalization period" in the czech republic. this was so interesting- and i really learned a lot. basically, the communist part was thriving in the czech republic during the 50s and 60s, but it was basically a totalitarian regime. finally during "prague spring" (the first half of 1968) the czech republic was finally in a good place, until august when the soviet troops invaded. they said they were only going to stay for ... read more

today we didn't have class until 2:00, and so my posse and i decided it would be a perfect morning to visit the castle! although we planned to leave at 9, we ended up leaving around 9:30- plus we had to catch the metro to mustek (old town metro stop) which is 2 stops away from malostranska (the metro stop for the castle) because dionne needed to cash her traveler's checks at citibank which doesn't charge a commission-- so anyway, we didn't end up arriving there until close to 10. we were a little worried about the time, but ended up being absolutely fine and got to see everything we wanted to see! we bought the B ticket, which grants access to st. vitus cathedral (the mondo site of the castle grounds), the tower in the ... read more

This morning we were going to the Underground. We were going down the escalators. We saw some people in Cardinals shirts going up the escalators. We were like "Woohoo, Cardinals" but the people didn't seem to care. I miss the Cardinals. Anyway, we made our way to the Prague Castle...finally. When we got there, we discovered that the castle is not one building but rather several within the castle grounds. The first building we went in was the St. Vitus Cathedral. It is the huge building you can see at the top of the hill from a ton of places. Anyway, we went in there. It was so weird seeing all of those people being tourists, but the place was still a church. I mean, they have all of these tourists and people coming in with ... read more

Upper Austria is the best location. It's two hours away from two of the most beautiful cities in the world, Prague and Vienna. Ok, I'll give you three guesses as to where I have been in the last week......... ..... ........ ........... Ok Jenna, no one thinks you're funny! Saturday morning, Kefa and I packed up his 1987 (or something comparable) mercedes and drove to the farm in mufittel(Kefa, forgive the spelling) pick up, and so I could meet in person, Stefan. His house is attached to the barn, with white stone walls, tile, and hardwood floors, and fresh flowers growing out of the windows. It is precious. His family was so warm, even if we could not speak more than a few sentances to eachother! After meeting his 80-something-year old grandparents(which still cook everyday and ... read more

... read more

dear diary... lol- just kidding. (little inside joke for my posse in the czech rep.) tonight we got back from olomouc-- not the most "exciting" town (as far as tourist attractions and things to do at night go) but it was pretty exciting in that i had 2 drinks last night! (another first in the alcoholic world for maxine) we took a 10:00 a.m. train yesterday, and arrived about 3 hours later. malvina and marketa took us to our dorm so we could dump our luggage- it was 2 to a room! which worked out very, very well. yay for dionne getting her own room (another little joke for my posse)! they took us to lunch at this cute, cheap pub to grab some lunch-- i had kofola (which if i haven't mentioned is this awesome ... read more

In exactly 6 months I will be 21, which means I can legally drink in the US. Today was another day in Olomouc. We had to check out of the dorms by 9:30. We went to an awesome cafe by a lot of the school buildings in town for breakfast. They had real orange juice, basically orange juice that is not extremely watered-down, so I was pretty excited about that. We met up for class after breakfast. The Vice Rector guy who gave us the tour yesterday lectured about the break-up of communism, which was really interesting. I had never really learned too much about communism before, I mean I knew the basics (communism = bad) but it is very interesting to learn about it in a place and with people who actually experienced it. Greetings from Prague. Actually Berlin, but we're backdating this entry. A few caveats. 1. Prague is the most expensive place we have visited so far. We had to pay $15 to have our laundry done. Beer was cheaper than water, which meant that drunk britons spent the early morning hours screaming outside our bedroom window. 2. Our hostel was disgusting. Group showers are gross and group showers that don't drain are even worse. 3. We visited Prague in the height of the summer tourist season, which happed to fall during a European heat wave. Keep these elements in mind when reading our thoughts of this city. We were really looking forward to Prague. Since that early '90s Levis commercial ("In Prague, you can trade them for a car") this city has embodied in our minds the ... read more
