Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205A bitterly cold day in Prague, making it hard to get going this morning. We started off with a walk across Charles Bridge which was fresh but very pretty. Then we went to the main square and the Astronomical clock. The square was packed with Christmas markets and people. A special highlight was trying the funnel cakes, which are traditional, and are pretty much donut mixture cooked in a funnel shape and rolled in sugar! Our tour started at the base of the Astronomical Clock but didn't see it chime – our guide did do a pretty good impression of what the guides in Munich call “the number 1 most overrated tourist attraction in the world”! We then walked past many beautiful old buildings, including a concert hall where Mozart played. By, this point we were ... read more

Brno was the first of the three zoos that I visited as I was staying in the city centre of Brno itself (which is very nice, by the way) and I had the pleasure of being shown around the zoo by a local resident and fellow zoo enthusiast. Brno is a decent sized zoo, not huge by any means, but quite a nice general zoo with a fairly diverse collection ranging from mammals to fish. It's quite easy to see that the zoo has improved in recent years and continues to improve as there are a fair few old, out of date enclosures, such as some very old primate enclosures, as well as some very nice new enclosures such as the excellent Kamchatka Bear exhibit and the African area where there is further development going on ... read more

Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205Oh, this is the way to travel! AUD$450 and after a nice breakfast at the hotel, our shuttle bus driver arrived at the hotel. Marek helped load our bags into his 9 person van, and drove us out of the beautiful, sunny Salzburg. We found more and more snow on the ground as we approached the Austrian-Czech border, nearly 2 hours north. Another 30 mins north, and Marek left us to explore Cesky Krumlov for 3 hours. Oh, what a beautiful town, on this amazing blue day. The snow on the roofs was amazing to see, as this medieval town situated in a river-bend glowed with its red roofs and brightly coloured houses. We wandered past the terrace with its views over the town, into the cathedral of St Vitus, and into the main ... read more

We drove our car 3,300 km from Minsk, Belarus where we are teaching to see the cities, Christmas markets and quiet snow covered countryside of Belarus, Poland, Czech Republic and eastern Germany. The majority of our 3 week tour was spent in friendly Czech Republic. Our final stop was in Cesky Krumlov nestled in a bend of the river. There were quite a few more tourists than we thought there would be this time of year. We still enjoyed chilly walks to the castle, through old town, and to a lovely overlook of the town. We frequented Na Louzi, an authentic Czech pub serving hearty and warm lunches at shared tables. We met a really nice Austrian man with his two friends. They were celebrating a recent real estate sale and were in a good mood. ...

Our third stop in Trebon for two nights turned out to be one of our favorite stops because of its lack of other tourists, awesome fish restaurant, pub and peat spa. This quaint old town was quiet in the off season. Just step through the any of the town gates and you connect with nature. A result of one of the many man-made lakes that abut the town.... read more

The majority of our 3 week tour was spent in friendly Czech Republic. We have long anticipated our eventual trip to Prague and the Czech Republic. It did not disappoint. We found beautiful Christmas markets, delicious beer, comforting food, and interesting architecture. It was cold, but we made the best of it. We recorded many 10,000 plus step days on our Fitbits. We had a fun Christmas Eve dinner near our hotel (Hostal) at the French restaurant Chez Marcel. The waiters were a lot of fun. We took an Urban Adventure tour of Prague and had a cooking class with Tereza and Pavel with ... read more

The majority of our 3 week tour was spent in friendly Czech Republic. A stop in Kutna Hora on our way from Olomouc to Prague was oddly interesting. Upon entering this unheated space you descend immediately into a crypt decorated with thousands of human bones (40,000) from plagues and wars. There are bone pyramids flanking the crypt, a large central chandelier, coat of arms, and more. It is a somber and reflective place, but that didn’t deter tourists with their constant thirst for selfies in every situation.... read more

Tip 2: Seize on opportunities when they arise. Don’t allow your inner procrastinator to mislead you. After disembarking the shuttle we immediately saw several currency exchange houses but I was anxious to get to our place and discouraged Rich from stopping. I was certain they would be all over the place, so I explained we should get settled first and then go to one closer to where we were staying. Unfortunately we discovered there were no other currency exchange houses in our area, so we were cash-deprived for a while. I had contacted Jake, our AirBnB host, from Frankfurt to give him our ETA which we guessed would be 3ish. I didn’t realize his rental wasn’t also his home. So, when we arrived at the front step of the apartment building, there was no indication how ... read more

Don’t skimp on the basics - like hiring a taxi in a strange new land where they don’t speak your language Unfamiliar with the language and transportation system, I silently ceded and agreed to pay the more expensive shuttle ticket rather than take the risk of hopping on a local bus with a non-English speaking driver. At least the shuttle would get us to the center. Once in the Center, we would get our bearings. In the end, I admitted we should have splurged for a taxi. The weather was a good 15 F higher than had been forecast. It was muggy and hot. We waited at the stop for ½ hour, me pacing back and forth, as I watched bus after bus come and go. I was able to WhatsApp my family during the wait, ... read more
