Good evening from Munich! My sincerest apologies that my entries are a tad delayed, but finding down time has been difficult on this trip - I'm normally on the go from early til late, and just feel like collapsing in a heap in the hotel room at the end of each day. However, I have started this blog with the intention of actually keeping up with it, so enjoy the musings of a knackered Kiwi haha. I've always wanted to visit Prague after seeing a photo of the Charles Bridge. That bridge seemed to a younger me to be the equivalent of the magical bridge as seen in the Thor movies (if you haven't seen that film, it is basically a fancy space bridge that sparkles and is really colourful and pretty). I was also keen ... read more

On July 16, my friend Anne and me left Belgium to go to the "Colours of Ostrava" festival in Czech republic. As always, our trip started as a mess : instead of leaving at 10 AM as planed, we left at 11 AM because Anne didn't have her passport and I did. Actually, first we agreed we wouldn't take it, but then we I decided it was better to take it and I hadn't told her, so she didn't bring hers and we had to go back and get it... This first day wasn't so good anyway. We wanted to get to Jena and spend our first night there, but we got into a lot of traffic jams and so we arrived pretty late at our hostel, then we couldn't find a nice restaurant and when ... read more

We headed for Prague Castle via Malostranska. In 2005 we got off at Hradcanska and strolled through Royal Garden towards the entrance for the castle. This time we took the No.2 2 tram from Malostranska to Prazsky hrad. We weren’t sure which would be the right stop, but one of the local people let me know where to get off. It was the lunch time when we arrived at the castle site. We had lunch at the terraced restaurant garden. From where we sat down we could see its striking spires and towers of St Vitus Cathedral. My father said, ‘The cathedral look like Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona.’ My mother expressed interest in visiting Josefov, Jewish District, after looking round the castle. I said to her that there were several buildings we were going to ... read more

Cubist buildings, Post modern buildings in Prague It was at 16:30 when we finished looking round Dvorak Museum including the ground of the Villa Amerika. My mother was still full of beans and wanted to see Cubic buildings along the river on the Vysehrad district. On the other hand, my father was tired. I suggested he would have a rest in the hotel. After leaving souvenirs in our rooms, we headed for Vysehrad via the Dancing House and the riverside. It was still very hot; we saw many people having parties, swimming and sunbathing along the river. Our destination was further down on the Rasinovo nari, Esplanade. Just after going past the railway bridge, we found the house of Kovarovicova – one of the most famous examples of Cubist architecture – was designed by Joseph Chochol ... read more

We took the Metro from Malostranska to Staromestska, and had ice cream on the Old Town Square. It was very hot – it was a job for us to find empty benches on the shadow area of the Old Town Square. Afterwards, we walked to Josefov, the former Jewish town. We firstly arrived at Maisel Synagogue. By showing our Prague Cards, we were given the free entry to several synagogues including Maisel Synagogue. This synagogue was founded by Mardecai Markus Maisel, Primate of Prague’s Jewish Town under Emperor Rudolf II, and had Jewish Museum showing the history of the Jew’s in Bohemia and Moravia from the 10th to the 18th century. Next we walked to Pinkas Synagogue. In terms of their architecture, the Pinkas Synagogue and the Old-New Synagogue are the oldest and the most important ... read more

I was responsible for organizing the itinerary on 24 June. I’d already decided to visit Alfons Mucha’s Museum and Drorak Museum. At night of 23 June, I decided to take my parents and Mark Wenceslas Square, Astronomical Clock of the Old Town Hall, Church of Our Lady Before Tyn, Charles Bridge, Church of St Nicholas via Mikulase Street and Lesser Quarter Square. On 24 June we got off at Museum and walked through Wenceslas Square. The renovation work was carried out on the façade of the National Museum. I told my parents that this boulevard like square was the place where reform movements – ‘Prague Spring’ in late 1960s and the ‘Velvet Revolution’ took place in 1989 – and more than 500,000 participated in demonstration on those events. The modern battle place has been transformed a ... read more

We then took the Metro from Karlovo nam to Staromestska, the old town. As we turned right, we could see St Nicholas Church, Tyn Church, Jan Hus’ statue, which we remembered seeing in 2005. We headed for the Old Town Hall and popped in the tourist information centre to exchange the voucher for Prague Card. We purchased 3-day Prague Card: we were offered unlimited journeys on the public transport, free entries to 50 museums/galleries and discounts on some museums and restaurants between 22nd and 24th June. It was 10 minutes before 12 o’clock when we reached in front of the astronomical clock. Many tourists had gathered to see the excitement at 12 o’clock. It was the first time my parents had been to Prague and they had never seen the astronomical clock. My father managed to ... read more

Although it was relatively cool in the morning, it became hot by the lunch time. My mother had broken her glasses which lens would turn darker when walking on sunny spots. She can walk and see the sight without glasses, but had cataract operations a few years ago. I rented her my prescription sunglasses to protect her eyes when walking over the Charles Bridge. After the lunch, we headed for Charles Bridge via Rudolfilnum, which is the home for the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. As expected, Charles Bridge was very popular: it was populated with a large number of tourists, painters, musicians and arts & crafts vendors. This pedestrian bridge makes great impact for its sculptural ornamentation with 30 statues of revered saints. Tourists gathered around some of the famous saints – St John Nepomuk, St Luitgard ... read more

Mark wanted to go to the Internet Café to arrange for check-in baggage. The receptionist showed us two nearest Internet cafes previous day. Following the map, we walked westwards on Jecna. There were a lot of historic and decorative buildings in Prague my mother started taking photos while walking on the street. We found Charles Square – a green park square – on the way to riverside. We then turned right at the Karlovo Nam Station, and found one of the Internet Cafes at 9:20. According to the opening hours shown on the front door, it was due to open at 9:30, but the person who was in charge of 22 June arrived late, and she let us enter the shop just after 10:00. The shop was selling various souvenir items. Mark managed to find the ... read more

Prague is a city that we were very comfortable in and could easliy spend 3 or 4 days just wandering about. Did the hop on hop off bus of course best way to see any city and the tour guides are the best to tell you all kinds of little stories about their city, which they are very proud of. The boast about the best beer in ALL of Europe, they say it is far more superior than German beer( not sure if the Germans would agree). We did all of the touristy things you do when you only have a day or two( should have allowed more time). We stood in front of town hall with all the other hundreds of tourist waiting for the Prague Astronomical clock to put on it's display. We wondered ... read more
