Morning: Today is nature day! We decide to explore the beautiful woods in Brloh and there are lots of hiking trails all around. Of course we chose the shortest one which should take us 2hour plus to finish. We had a nice breakfast from Frank's mum and packed our hiking stuffs and set off w Frank and dad to the starting point. We had a slow walk and reached the point where they set up a signpost and a sign on the tree trunks to indicate where we should follow the trail. Then they left us cos they heading off to another hiking trail which will take them 4-5 hours and that should be for the hiking pros, not us novice. Afternoon: The hiking trail took us to many different challenges and it was all pretty ... read more

So now we’re in Munich, having been to Cesky Krumlov (Czech Republic), Passau (Germany) and Salzburg (Austria). Cesky Krumlov is a world heritage listed medieval town, nestled in a bend of the Vltava River (the same one that goes through Prague). It’s an oasis of quaint buildings, narrow cobbled streets and mostly pedestrians only, and is a huge tourist attraction. In summer it would be very crowded - at this time of the year there aren’t a lot of people around so for us it was a charming place to wander, drink coffee/beer overlooking the river and explore the castle, which is notable for its bears in the moat (yuk!!), and for the fact that many of the walls are actually flat but painted to look as if they are 3D. Dave and Phyllis went for ... read more

Sunday, April 13th, was our final day in Bohemia. The sun thankfully was out to greet us again and the day was much warmer than Saturday. As we had done previously, we had breakfast in the hotel and then turned in our keys. The main attraction for the day was the ZOO Dvůr Králové. The website for the Zoo is http://www.zoodk.cz/home_en.php if you want to see more... When I first saw the itinerary, I thought, I am not 5. I do not want to go to a Zoo! When I got there, however, and started to look at the animals, I was reminded how much fun the zoo really is and how much I love animals. I ended up having a pretty good time. One thing I strongly dislike about the Czech Republic, however, is the ... read more

Hello All! I am so pleased and honored to hear that a lot of people are reading my blog! No pressure... right? ;-) Well, I have just returned from a small weekend excursion to Eastern Bohemia, which is the other major region or area in the Czech Republic. (The city in which I study, Brno, is in Moravia). I had a really interesting time and have lots of great photos to share with you! On Friday, April 11th, the group left the dormitory at 7:30 for a town called Litomyšl, which is known for being the birthplace of composer Bedřich Smetana. It is a lovely, unpretentious little town that also has a beautiful Renaissance Chateau. The group went on a tour of the Chateau and afterwards we were able to walk around the town for lunch ... read more

After 7 months, I said good bye to Prague for the last time as I made my way back to the States. I was sad to leave especially because the weather has been AMAZING; bright sun and flowers coming out already. It took me about 2 days total to get from Prague to Boston with a stop in London and a stop in New York City. I woke up in Boston this morning and it was snowing....welcome home....haha. Before I left, I got a chance to go on a day trip to Cesky Krumlov, which was amazing, although it was easy to see the tiny town was becoming more of a tourist destination...a mini-Prague...glad I went in the spring.... read more

Dobry den Well we’re writing this on our last night in the Czech Republic, in fact our last night in Eastern Europe (I think our first “real time” blog so far - woohoo!). We decided to return to our favourite places from summer - Krakow, Poland and Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic. We are so glad that we decided to return as we’ve had an absolute ball revisiting these fantastic and beautiful parts of the world. It has also been a wonderful experience being able to visit them in two very different seasons and also to see how this area of Europe is changing before our very eyes. We’re a little bit removed from it all in Australia being so far away from Europe but the European Union is (obviously) big around here. Most Eastern European countries ... read more

Yesterday at 9 am, we met by a nearby theater to be picked up in a van. No, not that kind of van. We were on a school trip to Chesky Krumlov, a little touristy town about two and a half hours from Prague. We stopped once at a gas station about 20 minutes outside of the town for a short potty break. Unfortunately, the women’s restroom was out of commission and everybody had to share the men’s room. One girl from the program, Ashley, was rather traumatized upon seeing a strange man urinate. The van dropped us off at a bus stop from which we walked to our bed and breakfast. We checked in, dropped our stuff off, and then went to get some lunch before a tour of the local brewery. A bunch of ... read more

Over 6 months of travelling throughout Asia, the UK and Europe, one place stands above and beyond most places visited. This place is the small town of Cesky Krumlov, nestled in the horse-shoe bend of the Vlatava river in the Czech Republic. On the walk from the bus station after catching a bus from Prague, the glimpses of the little town are absolutely breathtakingly picturesque. Churches, boarding houses, cafes and restaurants have all been squeezed into the almost island, and are bordered by cobble stone streets, tiny parks, and interesting shops. My brother and I planned on spending 2 days here originally but ended up being stuck for 4, due to the fact that we could not tear ourselves away. Good food at lovely bars sitting right above the river, keep you sitting at these restaurants ... read more

In the afternoon we drove out of Salzburg through the southern part of the Czech Republic to the town of Cesky Krumlov. Having not learned our lesson when we drove into Salzburg a few days earlier we again tended to rely too greatly on the GPS sytem in our car. This caused us to find our way onto another aptly named "unnamed road" which we followed for probably 45 minutes. While doing this the afternoon gave way to darkness and snow began to fall. We continued through forests on a road barely wide enough for one car through the darkness and snow. The entire 45 minutes or so we spent traveling this road we only encountered one other car and maybe 5 or 6 desperate seeming hitchhikers. But, all was not lost as we eventually emerged ... read more

Still living on the cheap we didn’t partake of the 9.50 Euro breakfast buffet. I was in a hurry to check on our van parked out on the street. The night before, the hotel clerk advised us to pay to park in the hotel lot, but seeing that others had parked on the street I figured “what the heck”. Once again we were lucky - no tickets, no tire boot and no dents or scratches. Once we had crammed our now bulging suitcases in back, rearranged our loose junk laying on our seats and powering-up Nuvi, we pulled-out into late rush hour traffic. We had gotten used to eating heart breakfasts so we were on the lookout for a place to eat. As we cruised down Lasallestrasse we kept an eye out for bakeries or breakfast ... read more
