Cesky Krumlov is so beautiful and romantic its impossible to try to describe. One of the prettiest towns we've even been to. Would recommed anybody to visit. I'm sure it can be overrun with tourists in the summer, we did see a few groups of japanese clicking their way along the streets, but generaly the town had a lovely laid back atmosphere. We can see why its a popular hangout spot for backpackers. Would love to return.... read more

This past weekend many of us went south to Bohemia and visited a UNESCO heritage site, the town of Cesky Krumlov. On the way we stopped in a town called, I think, Pilzn, where Pilsner Urquell is headquartered. We actually spent a night in Pilzen, which has nothing really going on except the brewery. We stayed in the "Hotel Continental" which I have learned is code for "Commie hotel trying to pose as classy Western Hotel" in Eastern Europe. It was as bizarre as most of them are--it does have this air of regalty to it, sort of, except inside it's a mess of socialist coldness, gaudy chandeliers, red carpet on the steps....my girlfriend commented the moment we went down the hallway where the rooms are, "It reminds me of a concentation camp here". The ... read more

Today we went on a day trip from Prague to Cesky Krumlov, a city that has not changed much since the Renaissance. You enter the town through, or under rather, the castle gate and immediatly in front of you is a small medieval town. The Vltava, the same river that runs through Prague, also passes through Cesky Krumlov, only its much smaller and calmer. There are a ton of little cafes and restuarants, the whole town is really enchanting. The buildings are all pretty much original and it made it much easier to picture exactly what the Renaissance town would look like, but still difficult to picture the people bustling about the town. I tried to imagine the stereotypical "barmaid wench" fetching water from the well and the peddlers in the main square trying to hawk ... read more

In just a short time this little town in South Bohemia has been visited by 2 Aussies and an American and an Englishman who happens to live in the same building as we do. Hows that for being a little peculiar...The town has a small population of Czechs ( 2000 ),2 Mongolians and a handful of Veitnamese which makes it quite an interesting mix. Roberto came over fromSydney to visit for 10days, he saw quite a bit in 10days, Prague, Pocatky, Cesky Krumlov, Telc, a Hockey match , Tabor. We walked around Prague making frequent pitstops at local Czech bars drinking hot wine or hot rum...grog and svarak, Roberto came to love these drinks. We were on the end of Winter, although it didnt snow whilst he was here, it was still around 5-12Degrees. Prague Council are ... read more

From Dresden we planned to travel to the Czech Republic, stopping en route for a day in Saxon Switzerland National Park. We left Dresden early and caught the trian to Rathen, a small village right in the middle of the national park. We had hoped to dump our bags somewhere in the village so that we could explore the hills behind the village, but when we got off the train the station was deserted and all the shops, restaurants and hotels were closed (grrrr to closing out of season). We headed to the small chain ferry to take us to the far side of the river Elbe where there seemed to be more signs of life. We attempted to ask the ferry driver if there was a left-luggage anywhere nearby, but he just grunted and repeatedly ... read more

Southern Bohemia is its location and we went for a short trip with my mate Jason who is 5th generation Floridian! From USA. This was at the time of the superbowl championships, so it was always gonna be hard for him to see the GAME live let alone find a place that screeened it live ...needless to say, we never found a place, but we came close... fooseball at Zelezna Ruda (skifields on the Czech/German border). So he came on holidays to snowboard with us and had a spare week to sightsee Prague, Cesky Krumlov and Telc to name a few of the beautiful places which are part of UNESCO the World heritage list. He also came to the one, ... read more

Traditional Czech food at Xmas time is fried carp and potato salad, it is very tasty and after learning about how they harvest the fish in South Bohemia, you begin to appreciate the carp, although in Australia carp is a pest, in Czech Republic it is the only fish, the Xmas lunch which every Czech looks forward to. Xmas cake is also an essential food item to indulge in over the festive season. A sweet cake which is plated and then baked. similair to a scone, it has raisons and almonds too. The Czech customs around Xmas time are lovley, Cert ( devil ), Andel (angel), Milkulas (St. Nicholas) small children gather, usually the ... read more

Well, it has happened, it may be a little late for a white xmas, but we were walking back from the pub last night, and after pointing at the sky wondering what those white blobs were that were falling, we realised it was snowing! Anyway, lets start at the beginning. We jumped on a bus at Prague and headed for Cesky Kromlov, 3 hrs down south. Thankfully we had prebooked a seat on the bus (not something you normally have to do) as the bus driver decided he'd make a few extra bucks by letting 20 or so others stand up in the aisle (for 3 hrs....were they mad???) this also meant there was far too much luggage for the bus, so it was also piled in the aisles...what was he thinking. Anyway, we froze our ... read more

Last night all of my train fantasies came true. We traveled from Prague, Czech Republic to Krakow, Poland via a train and slept in a COUCHETTE!! Our options were as follows: 2 bed, 4 bed, 6 bed couchette, or regular seat. For 8 hours?!?! What do you think? We got the 6 bunk sleeper. The last three cars of the train were all for sleeping, and I felt very privileged to be shown to my own room. They even provided bedding! (if you could call a starchy cotton sheet and a heavy wool blanket sheets). I was so excited, it was hard to get to sleep. We had two Germans in our "cabin" who spoke little English, so I tried to cross the language barrier by offering up a "guten nacht" when I turned out ... read more
