Praha, Cesky Krumlov, and Plzen (or as you English speaking people say....Prague, Czech Krumlov, and Pilsen): Quick Notes: 1. Shout outs to Jon Lim, Brandon, Caroline, and Tim for their comments. I believe Jon is in the lead still with Caroline a close second. And by the way Caroline, that hairy creature broke down and got a hair cut in Prague. Brandon, Matt liked the rabbit and Christina has had it before, so, like they say in Italy "No problema." Thumper was delicious. 2. Thank you Patti for the message. Unfortunately, the down payment on Sleeping Beauty's castle was outside our daily budget. 3. Border Crossing: We cross the border into the Czech Replubic and a few kilometers in (yeah, I'm getting the hang of this metric thing) a guy comes up behind us, flashes his ... read more

Our guidebook calls it "one of the most beautiful little towns in Europe," and we both have to agree; so adorable, sitting in a river valley, with rolling green hills all around, and old castle on a hill, narrow cobblestone streets, and perfect little shops and restaurants. It's exactly what you think of when you hear "European village." Yes, it's pretty touristy, and most of the centre of town focuses on the tourist trade, but somehow this town retains its authenticity. Just walking a few minutes from the center gets you into real life; we enjoyed walking along the riverbank a ways and getting lost in the winding side streets. Hostel 99, where we stayed, was laid back, nice, and we wished we had more days to hang out. We ate goulash with pork dumplings, one ... read more

Cesky Krumlov is a cute little place that sits nestled in the bends of the Vltava River in a valley in Bohemia. Overrun with package tourists by day, in the evening its quiet apart from the Cathedral bells which chime the hour, and has a nice laid back charm to it. The huge castle which dominates the cliff above town is awesome. From its tower you have perfect views over the old town and into the hills beyond. The castle itself is a series of ornate courtyards and some elaborate gardens which you can walk through without paying a cent. We chose to pay and took Tour Number 1 through some of the most impressive rooms of the castle. We saw the dining and bedrooms of the different eras and ruling families as well as the ... read more

Geo: 49.3941, 14.3061Could've caught an early train to Cesky Krumlov but I wanted to chat with Naoual a little bit more (pathetic, I know!). Ended up getting to Cesky very late (11:00 bus did not exist as it turns out ... I suspect the ticket guy was just being an ass though). Got to Cesky Budejovice 16:30 ... thought I was going to miss the connection to Cesky Krumlov (more than 20 minutes late). Luckily, the train was still sitting there. Met Jay from California - we were both dazed and confused at the train station. We scrambled to make the connection. We met a guy named Kabeer on the train .. what a story this guy has got! Apparently he has been traveling a lot for the past 10 years. Not because he likes it ... read more

We have arrived in Cesky Krumlov - what has to be the most scenic village in the Country. It is a medieval castle town in Southern Bohemia built around the bending Vltava river. We are staying on the banks of the Blatva in a small pension operated by a very bohemian (small b) woman and her American writer-partner. Karen G, if you're reading this, you would love it. Bec finds the place very scary, as she feels like we're at Karen's place the whole time - it's decorated with wallhangings and flowers from their travels, and they are very serious about their Turkish coffee. The town is bordered on one side by a medieval castle, and its sloping grounds. There is an open air theatre there, where an "old music festival" (pre-1400) is currently being held. ... read more

Good Morning Cesky Bears There is nothing like wanting to avoid the crowds to make you jump out of bed early in the morning on your holidays. My first priority (after caffeine that is) was to climb Cesky Tower for the morning view of the UNESCO Heritage listed town. The town was already basked in early morning sun and in the pit of my tummy, I knew today was going to be a wonderful carefree day. The Cesky Castle bears thought so too as they were padding around their humble moat from one side, under the bridge and out to the other. Only a handful of voyeurs were hanging about and they didn’t mind the intrusion. A little French boy had a moment of stage fright coming down the wooden steps of the tower and promptly ... read more

“Uh, I cannot find your breakfast, she says she has left out breakfast, but I cannot find it. I am so sorry. So sorry, sorry,” he repeated while pacing back and forth. Lisa and I both tried to interrupt his rapid apology and calm him down. “Let me look again, uh you, um, you um…” he did a three sixty degree turn and held up his hands, looking around again before Lisa and I told him we were more than comfortable sitting where we were. “Juice? Coffee? Tea?” he offered in way of compensation. “Coffee,” I said. “Juice,” Lisa replied simultaneously. Poor man, he did not know what to do, get our drinks or find breakfast. He fired up the coffee machine and brought out two juices and two coffees, then with one hand to his ... read more
