Saturday 10th May 2014 After a bit of a hassle with the front desk of the hotel regarding the rate we should pay, (luckily we had the email from the boss showing the charge) we set off to Paris in the pouring rain. This didn't let up for the nearly 100km drive, Rags being very diligent in his driving, especially so for the last 20kms or so where the traffic and the constant changing of lanes on the freeway kept him on his toes. With a sigh of relief he handed over the keys to the Budget employee, no marks on the car and everything as it should be! We had stacks of time at the airport and settled in with a coffee at Starbucks, eating the macarons we had been given as a farewell ... read more

Phase 4 The first version of this was probably funnier and longer but when I saved it, it just went off into some internet cloud and has not been viewed again no matter how desperately I tried. One hour lost. Friday May 9th Up early for a quick breakfast in the room, bus to the train and after a quick cappuccino caught the 10:18 to Linz. Found the bus stop after a couple of times passing it by. We were looking for a bus depot but it was a bus pole. A very nice restaurant called Niu was nearby so we set up camp on their second floor to keep an eye on the post and enjoy a slow lunch. The chef personally came out to explain the menu to us and was pleasantly surprised to ... read more

Mom and Leigh came to visit! I love family in Europe. Take note, people. Visit me in this place. We had a long weekend in May for labor day. Labor day is May 1st, which was a Thursday, so they gave us Friday off too. Thanks, Hungary! Mom and Leigh flew into Prague on Wednesday morning, and I took a 7 hour train right after school. On the train I graded lots of tests and read the entirety of The Fault In Our Stars. It's really an experience to be SOBBING to yourself on a very public train and having the ticket inspector walk over. I got to the train station around 11:00, and a guy from the inn picked me up (luxury!!). When I got to the inn/hotel/flat/whatever it was, Mom greeted me and Leigh ... read more

The long awaited day had finally arrived--an entire day off in Prague. No hockey trainings, no warm-ups, and no chalk talks. Just one day to ourselves to be tourists in Prague. After five days in the township of Beroun, it felt like we were country bumpkinds heading into the "big smoke" of high-flying city life. The train ride in was interesting as we journeyed across the countryside. I had anticipated an extended suburbia as we approached Prague, but was pleasantly surprised to see paddocks dotted by small villages until just 5 minutes outside Central Station. The station is located in the "old town" not far from the Jewish Quarter and Old Town Plaza. There was magnificent stone architecture everywhere one cast their eyes. Some buildings were spectacularly ornate with elaborate statues incorporated into the facade and ... read more

Out of all the places were going this was the bucket list. We both had a feeling about Prague. And we were right! However, we may have loved Prague but I don't think Prague loved us though as we left in a worse state than we arrived! Our first day we of course arrived on the sleeper train from Krakow in Poland. The novel there was that we had arranged through our hotel to have a driver pick us up at the station, knowing we'd be tired and unsure in yet another new city. It was kind of awesome seeing our name on a piece of paper and having this nice man take my bag for me and lead us to a luxury car outside the station. Not like our normal confusion when we arrive in ... read more

We were on one of those picturesque tram going back to the old town. There is something special about Prague. It is always full of tourists, but no matter how full the streets are, I feel alone in the world. Prague makes you wonder. I have to admit, I was the weird kid who dreamed of castle, dragons, cavaliers and Robin hood while every other kids were dreaming of being a member of Nsync or a football star. I always wondered how was life back then. I am not going to make a lot of friends back home (I probably already pissed you all off all with my Nsync comments), but I kind of like Queens and Kings. I understand all the good arguments against royalty, mostly the economic ones, but I think it is charming, ... read more

Today woke up very early, around 4.30am, which is typical for me for the first few days of a European holiday. My husband, Gary, also woke earlier than usual, so we headed out before breakfast for a walk over the Charles Bridge. It was so much nicer without the massive crowds of the day before! We walked slowly over tro the other side, and then slowly back again. There was a very large crowd of people on the way back with cameras at the ready waiting to see the sunrise, which was due at around 8:15am. We were too hungry to wait at that point and returned to the Leonardo for a wonderful buffet breakfast. After breakfast we headed back to see Old Town Square in full daylight. We spent an hour or so wandering around ... read more

My husband and I, together with our 19 year old son and 18 year old nephew left Melbourne on New Year's Day on a night flight at around 10.00pm. We were flying to Prague for the start of our three week trip. We boarded our Emirates A380 and found we had been given new seats, all four of us had * seats with extra leg room. It was an excellent flight, very comfortable, heaps of leg room and as usual on Emirates, the food was great. A couple of hours stopover in Dubai and then it was off to Prague, where we landed just after 1:00pm on Thursday 2nd January. The weather was cool, but certainly not cold, and the day was slightly cloudy. We were met at the airport by a car from our hotel, ... read more

After a lazy start this morning (well, it is Christmas Day!) we headed out for another day of exploring Prague. As we walked into Old Town Square the church bells were ringing again. I just love the sound of church bells ringing so I nudged Bernie into action with the Sony camera to record some of the activity in the square to the accompaniment of the church bells. After standing around in the square for a while, just absorbing the atmosphere, we walked over the river to visit Prague Castle. We've been in town since Saturday, but we are only just getting around to visiting Prague's premier tourist attraction. It has been a case of juggling our sightseeing schedule with the Christmas timetables of the various places that we have wanted to visit. According to some ... read more
