Dear All Greetings from Split! This is another amazing Croatian city, though really quite different to Dubrovnik. Being Croatia's second largest city at 265,000 people, it is a large and busy urban area with sprawling suburbs filled with communist-era residential tower blocks and hulking great port and industrial areas. Dubrovnik, on the other hand, was slow-paced and deeply charming, a quaint and seriously splendid little city with a comparatively diminutive 40,000 residents. Whilst different, Split also packed a punch (almost) as good as Dubrovnik to me, most notably with its unbelievable Diocletian's Palace right in the heart of town, more on that below. I must admit, I was a little disappointed with the way I arrived there though. I had originally planned a fast ferry ride from Dubrovnik to spend three hours on the island of ... read more

Dear All Greetings from Dubrovnik! Yay, I'm in Croatia, country number 91, for a week over our October half-term! My Croatian adventure includes two nights in Dubrovnik, two in Split, one night in the Plitvice Lakes National Park, and a final two in Zagreb. While looking at a map of Europe not too long ago, I realised that there are only seven European countries I've not yet been to. So the plan is now, as well as to reach country number 100, to also over the next few years and during my mini-trips throughout the year outside summer and Easter, scoop up these countries and hopefully complete my map of Europe! While I have been to Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia and Slovenia, there are still three former Yugoslavian countries I've yet to visit, and hence came my ... read more

I left the hostel in Zadar mid-day yesterday and headed back to the bus station for the 3 hour trip to Trogir. Stela (from the group Host a Sister- what a great group!) was waiting with her daughter to pick me up. We went back to her place, and her daughter helped get my bag to my room. Then we had dinner together, salmon and salad. She has an apartment above her house that she rents during busy season, so I had it to myself- so kind! And there was a bathtub (I only had a shower in the apartment in Vir and in the hostel, and had been wanting to soak my sore body in hot water). I had a great bath and a pretty early bedtime. The next day, my flight wasn't until early ... read more

I got up early morning for my bus into Zadar. The taxi came as prearranged, and helped me with my bag. Once I arrived in Zadar, the hostel was a 10 min walk away, and as I had purchased a roller bag to replace my suitcase, I was ok getting there on my own. It was about 8:30, so reception wasn't open yet. I just left my bag in the common room and then headed out for my follow up appointment at the hospital. It took awhile to figure out where I had to go to my appointment (I was misdirected to the incorrect floor), but eventually found the right spot. I was sent for x-rays, and then back to wait. Eventually the doctor saw me and said things looked fine, reminded me to avoid lifting ... read more

I arrived in Zadar around 9:30am, and Hayden was waiting for my arrival. He's a traveler from New Zealand that I've been communicating with- we decided we'd team up to explore for a few days: I'm sharing my home exchange apartment in Vir and he's renting out a car for us. We plugged in the directions to the apartment, and off we went. We stopped at a grocery store along the way to pick up a few basics, and then continued on our way to the apartment. Vir is an island connected by a bridge to the mainland, with a cute beach town vibe. Our apartment is just 100 metres or so to the water. It has a lovely covered porch, and little yard with fig trees. We dropped off our things, unpacked groceries, and then ... read more

The afternoon thunderstorms rolled into Osijek as forecast. We were safely in our accommodation by then and had already been out and done a small look around as well as our shopping for today. We waited the showers out and went to dinner about 7:30pm. Of all the places we could have picked we ended up in the American Bar Dollar. An American themed bar and restaurant. At least we knew what we were eating. No matter what time we set to leave in the mornings we habitually miss it by 15 minutes. We left at 8:15am today with our destination, Sotin, being determined by kilometers we need to travel and the minimum facilities we need for shopping and food, rather than the destintion itself. The great thing about today is the heat has finally broken ... read more

We spent yesterday afternoon confirming our route to Belgrade. We'll take 4 riding days to get there including a big day of 85kms. Unless we change our minds - again. We asked the lady at our accommodation for some dinner recommendations. She mentioned Bongo Bongo and Romana's and then said she preferred Romana's. So we ambled the 1.3kms to Romana's in the still very hot evening air. When we got there it was closed. There was red tape across the doors which looked a bit weird. I got the translator out, took a picture and read the translation. "Tax Administration". They had been closed down for not paying tax. We were in hysterics (and still hungry). We walked the 1.3kms back to Bongo Bongo and it was closed (because it was Monday). The best we could ... read more

Croatia has a fascinating history, but most amazingly, its founders had the foresight to build cities that would one day become the set of ‘Game of Thrones’. As we cruised south through Split, Korčula, and eventually Dubrovnik, we could see that every town has jumped on the Game of Thrones bandwagon with Game of Thrones souvenirs and tours for those enthusiasts. For the septuagenarians I was cruising with, they had less interest in these activities. Each of these three stops was once well fortified, but not necessarily at the same time. Split was the Roman emperor Diocletian’s retirement home and it had a lot more living space than a typical Arcare residence. Before Diocletian turned the first sod, there was nothing much along this section of coast and the town of Split evolved around the palace. ... read more

We said our goodbyes to our sailing companions after disembarking in the morning and made our way to Split Airport for our flight to Rome. Little did I know that I would be channelling John McEnroe again. “You can’t be serious? ”Presented our flight details at check-in only to be told that the Vueling flight had departed at 8.40am. All our information in black and white had 3.45pm. The airline official checked our information, saw that we were on the flight manifest, everything was correct except … a big except … the departure time. We had received no email, no sms, no phone call, no smoke signals, that the flight time had changed … changed big time! We had to purchase tickets again … this time with Croatian Airlines leaving at 12.05pm … 854 Euros please ... read more

Croatia is sufficiently close to Italy to have excellent gelati. But clearly, it is also too far away from Italy to possess the skills required to make a satisfactory waffle cone. Such are the hardships of cruising the Dalmatian Coast. That is how we are feeling now. We are relaxed, enjoying some beautiful sights and well fed. I think that is what cruising is all about, isn’t it? But we didn’t feel that way from the moment we arrived in Croatia. When we got off the plane in Zagreb, we found that our bags didn’t get off the plane in Zagreb. They were still in Vienna, which was problematic! Oh well, there is no point in stressing too much about something that is out of your control. At least that is what I was saying to ... read more
