Apart from taking a trip into Dubrovnik itself on one day for a few hours we just plan to blob out here and the apartment and hotel set up should do us just nicely. It is nice being able to get a full breakfast and this morning Gretchen made her favourite poached eggs only to find that she didn't have a utensil to get the eggs out of the pan.A large spoon had to suffice in the end.You have to break the eggs to eat them anyway I say. Breakfast was on our terrace and with nowhere to go for the day other than the shop for some lunch and dinner,it was a leisurely affair. It is another beautiful day and if we are to do a short walk we will make it before lunch and ... read more

We are moving on today from B-H to Croatia and in a way we are pleased. Not that we want to rush this adventure on any faster than its going but because two days in this country has been enough for us. With what will be a relatively long drive ahead we are up early and down to breakfast. No joking about bacon and eggs today just whether there will be omelettes on the menu again. The same thick set, efficient man was there and again we were the only people in the room for breakfast. This time though we got in before he made the tea for us and we ordered up two cups of coffee. Ah ! he said, expresso!!And two tiny cups of hot strong coffee arrived.OK the cups were small but the strength of the cooffee ... read more

Rab Days 10-12 (September 1-3) We reversed our local bus trip back to the bus station and boarder our coach for the journey to Rab, I managed to stop in the bakery to get some burek (zeljanica) for breakfast they were fresh from the oven. Even more amazing coastline for this stretch of the journery. Visible from the mainland were long thin islands that were denuded of trees due to a wind that came through the area. These islands were a clay pink in colour and they eflecteion they made in the surrounding crystal clear blue waters created a breathtaking view. The road skirted the coast for most of the way similar to the great ocean road. We had a connecting bus to catch that would take us to Rab Isaland. Our leader assured us that ... read more

Zadar - Day 9 (August 31) Bus travel again, but this afforded more great views of the Croatian coastline. From the bus station on the outskirts of the town we took a local bus to the harbour and old town. I‘m sure the locals just love it when a group of travellers with back packs cram onto their buses. This one was packed and most of our luggage was piled in the centre trapping one lady in, who panicked that she wouldn‘t be able to get out, and feell over bags and was caught by our leader who wa then stuck balancing bags and a lady. She needn‘t have worried as we all were getting off at the same spot. Nothing too hurt, just pride. We wandered through cobble streets to find our small local hotel. ... read more

Somehow the theme of this trip ended up being ‘What would Putin do?’, strange but true. Scott and I, plus two good friends Adam and Myles headed for Croatia for 10days of sun, island hopping and bottles of Croatian’s finest vino (read horrid). We set out early Saturday morning with my work laptop backpack full of clothes, the night before we had a minor disaster. After our Sri Lanka trip we decided to throw away Scott’s backpack, clean forgetting this fact I merrily lent by backpack to Adam and it wasn’t until 11pm Friday evening we realised our predicament. Lucky the laptop backpack I have been given was large enough to fit a small child, so we jammed all our clothes in there. It meant we had to be pretty ruthless with items taken, which worked ... read more

Location: Dubrovnik Weather: Sunny, 33 °C Kathy and I both went on a tour in Dubrovnik - I gave her a break from doing the washing! The medieval city of Dubrovnik was beautiful. However in the heat the glare from the limestone roads was very bright and added to the extreme heat. I have to admit that I am getting tired of the heat - it is exhausting walking around and listening when it is too hot. An interesting fact about Dubrovnik - it was never conquered in its many centuries of existence, every time it looked like war might be approaching the Council of Dubrovnik simply brought off the prospective invaders. Dubrovnik was rich because it was a maritime and trading power. They paid ransom and then got it back in trade! No wars ever ... read more

Wow - Croatia! We have had the most amazing time here. It has truly been the highlight of our trip and I am absolutely in love with this beautiful country. I had no idea it would be so amazingly excellent. I wish that we never had to leave but I know I'll never forget how spectacular this part of our journey was. We started in Split after taking the overnight ferry over from Ancona. Split has some great markets and I spent half my day ˝browsing˝ for dresses and sarongs. We stayed at a great campsite (Camp Stobrec) 6km outside of Split and after setting up camp, we drove to the airport to pick up Stef and Jess and Jason who were all flying in from London. The next day was departure day - woohoo!! When ... read more

Check-in; Excellent, particularly because there were many lost pax making their way onto the Ika, who were supposed to be on the Istok, and I was more than happy to escort them over there so I could flirt with the lovely new cookie, Nikola. Day 1; Mljet (Polace) Number of pax for dinner; 22 (bbq) We had a nice sail into Polace, lots of beers and friend-making, and a very nice swim stop. Our bbq was a big success because we ate outside in the lovely evening, and Mama was there being her crazy self, and the Istok was beside us so there were 2 boatloads to meet and chat with. In fact, the boats stuck close together all week (I think the Istok captain was doing me a favour), and it was great because the ... read more

Split - Day 6-8 (28-30 August) We left Korcula at 5:45am taking a Catamaran Ferry for a few hours journey to Split. Split is a larger town on the Dalmatian mainland but it too has an old town, or more correctly a palace compound. We stayed right in the heart of it. The palace was of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who loved Split for it’s beautry and therapuetic thermal spas. He built himself a palace here in the late 3rd century, for holidays and later for retirement. However, after his death it became disused and some time later (7th century) permission was given to some Romans to return from their exile and to set up insdie the palace area. Accordingly, many of the palace buildings are no longer there, having been replaced by ordinary dwellings, but ... read more

Our first and major problem with this blog is that we don't have any photos as we were both in the wedding party and didn't have our camera. It will have to suffice for now with some pics from Maja and Steve's camera. Or you can go on Facebook and look up everyone else's photos of Maja and Steve! Best ones so far are Jason's: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=319081&id=805930611 The day was absolutely amazing. And it was bloody hot. The next day had a lovely breeze, but M&S's wedding day was crazy hot. Maja never complained once, it was very impressive. The girls woke up early and got started on the day. Maja headed to her "mani-pedi" (as Son likes to call it) and the rest of us brought the stuff with us to the hotel, where we would ... read more
