Our ferry arrived into Dubrovnik, Croatia at about 7am :) Our entry into our first non EU country was a gorgeous sunny one and we had decided we would pace ourselves into the morning and see a bit by walking to our guesthouse. After taking the scenic route and some great help...we arrived at the guesthouse which had a gorgeous terrace and garden. Our guesthouse owner, Stjepo, was really nice and gave us the run down on Dubrovnik. Apparently we were really lucky with the weather as he said it had been raining for 2 weeks straight before we arrived. Dubrovnik is an interesting city...as Stjepo said...everything is solely for tourism. He said it was more like Europe and not Croatia. The populatation of Dubrovnik almost doubles during the summer which is possible to see with ... read more

1.Did you know that in 667. anonymous cosmographer from Ravenna wrote down the name of the city, in its Latinised form: Ragusa-Ragusium? He wrote: “Epidaurum id est Ragusium” (”Epidaurum is Ragusium today”). The settlement of the same name had already existed. 2.Did you know that in 972, the people Dubrovnik chose St. Vlaho (St. Blasius) for their saint patron? His image was impressed in seals and money. Numerous statues of St. Blasius were made and the saint’s image was inwrought in the flag of the city. 3.Did you know that the lindjo is an old traditional dance of the Dubrovnik region? We arrived by bus on the northern eastern corner of Dubrovnik and in the shadows of a huge cruiseliner: the Costa Mediterranea I think. Apparently these mega-craft accommodate up to 3000 folk. All hell breaks loose when they all converge on a small place like Dubrovnik at once. We experienced a bit of this as we entered the old town with backpack and wheeled luggage. Gawking tourists all around us and stopping whenever and wherever. We made our way to a quieter part of the city where Catherine, via someone else's Blog, had booked an excellent guest house. We ended up right at the eastern end of old town in a loft directly overlooking the boat harbour, above the old town wall, and absolutely in the thick of it without being noisy. A brilliant find, that ... read more

They say you must visit Croatia. They are dead right. Two and a half hours after embarkation of jet on a grey Surrey afternoon at Gatwick, we were in Split, in a cosy bay in the Eastern Adriatic. We were recommended for our first culinary experience of the holiday that evening a small underground mum-and-dad-run restaurant. The lighting was cruel, the music was bad, and the food was amazing. What followed was nine days of seafood risottos, fried sardines, hake, octopus and mussels complimented by crisp, dry and simple local white wines. Thanks to rather brilliantly losing my drivers' licence a year ago and failing to mention it to anyone (I lost the licence card itself - I didn't commit a felony if that's what you're thinking!), our plan to travel by hire-car was revised at ... read more
