Hello Quick update - We drove from Turkey through Northern Greece down the coast of Albania and Montenegro and now are in Croatia headed to Bosnia. Blue Betty is running great and we are still amazed at our adventure daily. We have been on Mr. toads wild ride at times driving on crazy roads and no traffic rules (Albania) . Jan and Betty are one being by now. I have learned how to navigate and keep my mouth shut. I really am good with a map and am a great camp cook. The weather could not be better. We still have our tans. We are heading North and will spend at least a week with family in Sweden then fly back to the USA on October 26th. Bitter sweet!!!!!! Love and miss you all. Republika Hrvatska - The Dalmation Coast, August 26th - September 25th, 2009 After leaving Budapest we decided to start exploring Croatia in the capital city of Zagreb. During our stay in Hungary we were completely spoiled by having our own apartment and having to return to the hostel life proved to be quite difficult. It was made even harder by being in one of the worst hostels we've yet stayed in on this trip. Six person dorms in a room better suited for two, no room to even unpack, and hot as hell. Clearly the only way to deal with the situation was to drink beer for dinner and mingle in the beer garden! Over our 3 night stay in Zagreb we experienced some of the hottest temperatures of our trip yet, nearly 40 degrees. This ... read more

Byron's Pearl of the Adriatic has a hefty reputation to live up to but does so instantly as soon as you step through Pile Gate and gaze down the Stadun at the Clock Tower at the far end. Perfect marble covered steets, uniform buildings on either side, side-streets and alleyways at every turn and endless bars and restaurants spilling out onto the pedestrianised town. If the perfect old European city had to be designed from scratch, it would probably look a lot like Dubrovnik. I had originally intended to start my last trip here but instead opted for Venice and there are a lot of similarities between the two old city states at either end of the Adriatic (just swap water for marble). Both impossibly attractive, great to wander around but inevitably hugely popular. Arrived fairly ... read more

Saturday 12th - cruise day. I arranged for a porter to take our bags from the Hotel Castello to the pier (about three quarters of a kilometer away, through a rapidly gathering crowd) where we had to catch a public transport boat (water bus) back to Pier Roma (no more water taxis for Joan!!). My dilemma was to keep us and the baggage in one tidy heap. Joan would not be able to keep up with the porter and we didn’t want to lose sight of our bags. The porter was due at 1100 so at 1030 I escorted Joan to the pier then doubled back to accompany the porter. The crowds were now enormous but in true porter fashion we carved our way through. The public transport boat was packed - standing room only. When ... read more
