We found a nice big campsite about 10km outside of Split. Our pitch was located right next to a very calm and shallow bay. We spent the next 2 days catching up on some much needed clothes washing, going shopping in Split Centre (for my upcoming birthday presents and cake!) and also catching up on skype. Friday 28th August was my birthday! I awoke to a fully cooked hearty breakfast from my lovely wife, complete with a beautifully presented set table including a central floral arrangement (well a single flower and some shrubbery in a plastic cup) and folded napkins. Suz had gone to a lot of effort with what she had to work with! After devouring almost three pigs worth of bacon it was present opening time. A brand new t-shirt and a nice new ... read more

Our short stay in Trogir has come to an end and today we have just a short drive to Sv Petar, just south of Zadar, which will take us along the mid Dalmation coast. Being up on the hill away from the main road has meant that at night its been very quiet. However,at some time during the night the cats from up behind the apartment came down to perform in front of our apartment. There wasn't any fighting just long bouts of meowing.Presumably they were looking for food and perhaps our upstairs neighbours had encouraged them down with leftover food from their BBQ. With no rush we had a nice lie in and another leisurely breakfast before packing up and hitting the road around 10.30am. The traffic on route #8 was quiet and initially well behaved with no ... read more

We did have ideas of driving into Split and taking the ferry to the island of Hvar for the day but Split is 24km away and the ferry timetables we found on the internet meant either an early morning or late afternoon departure neither of which were attractive to us.So we are going to spend the day just relaxing on Ciovo Island and take a walk or two from our apartment. So with no schedule to work to we had another leisurely breakfast and afterwards headed up the hill to see whether we could get a view over the other side of the island from the top of the hill. Today we had the sense to take water with us and although it was just a gradual climb up to the crest of the hill we ... read more

Our desire since arriving on the Adriactic coast is to buy some fresh fish to cook ourselves for dinner. But we are thinking that the Adriactic might just be fished out as we have been unable to find a fish shop since we left Dubrovnik. So we plan to give the local market a tryout this morning and see whether our faith might be restored. We don't plan to do anything else but some local walking to see how the locals live and take in the vistas as we head down the hill from the apartment we are staying in. With nothing to rush for we slept in and had a late breakfast and with the bonus of the internet we listen to Newstalk ZB talkback and Larry Williams. So we are up to date with all the current ... read more

We were going to give the days blog a different heading due to another incident like the infamous 'Vienna debacle' that occured as the day came to an end but our drive up the Dalmation coast was far more impressive so we shall refer to that instead. We shall come to what is now known as the 'Trogir incident'later. The day dawned with a stiff breeze blowing so hard that it demolished the rattan roof over our little terrace and the wind didn't subside by the time we rose for breakfast so we had to have our last morning breakfast here inside.Wind is not something we had expected in this little bit of paradise. The sun is out and is as strong as ever.We have been wearing sandals for the past 4 weeks and in fact ... read more

OK........ I have literally spent the last week sailing in Croatia. I began in Split and took seven days to sail down to Dubrovnik. I joined an organised tour of 27 people and shared a room with an Aussie country girl Jodie. It was a fantastic week and one of the highlights of my summer. I flew into split from Milan Malpensa (italy) where I had stayed for 1 night. I never would have thought that getting from Greece to Croatia would be sooooooooo difficult. Even though they are so close not many airlines fly between the two for reasons unknown, but after a quick stop I was in Croatia. Unbelievably I met 4 australian guys in my hotel in Italy who also did a detour to make their way to Croatia and two of them ... read more

The weather is back to what we have been use to over the past 4 weeks, fine and sunny. The thunderstorm has cleared the atmosphere and the air has got that fresh feeling about it. We have been hanging out for a fish dinner since we left the UK and we had thought that the Adriatic coast would provide what we were looking for. However there is an absence of any fishing fleet here and it looks like we will have to wait until we get further north up the coast to get our fish dinner. So on our short shopping trip for dinner we ended up buying chicken again and as our daughter Leigh says 'you can't go wrong with chicken'...just as long as it is fully cooked!! It is Fathers Day back in NZ and I cannot ... read more

There is a promise of a weather change today and the day starts out with dark clouds overhead. It is still quite warm although we expect that once the rain arrives it will cool of somewhat. We have nothing planned again for today and because of that we didn't even think about getting out of bed until 9am when we started to get a bit hungary for breakfast. After the problem with getting the poached eggs out of the pan without the right utensil we decide on scrambled egg instead smothered with a generous portion of Vegemite from our sqeezeable tube which hopefully may last this whole adventure. We had to abandon breakfast on the terrace though as the rain came just as we were ready for the first course of cereals.Thankfully our room is well equipped ... read more

Day 1; Hvar Number of pax for dinner; 26 (free dinner) We had quite the dramatic start to our tour. As soon as we pulled into Hvar, one of my girls had a diabetic fit in her bed. Her friend is a nurse and was trying to help her, but the girl had gone into a hypo-coma and was writhing and screaming, even though she was unconscious. It was pretty crazy to watch! I phoned 112 and the ambulance arrived within 5 minutes. They came down to her room (one big paramedic fell down the stairs because he was hurrying... It was hilarious!) and gave her some shots and she came out of it. I thought we might lose her for the rest of the tour, but within a half hour she was out on deck ... read more
