Rab Days 10-12 (September 1-3)
We reversed our local bus trip back to the bus station and boarder our coach for the journey to Rab, I managed to stop in the bakery to get some burek (zeljanica) for breakfast they were fresh from the oven.
Even more amazing coastline for this stretch of the journery. Visible from the mainland were long thin islands that were denuded of trees due to a wind that came through the area. These islands were a clay pink in colour and they eflecteion they made in the surrounding crystal clear blue waters created a breathtaking view. The road skirted the coast for most of the way similar to the great ocean road.
We had a connecting bus to catch that would take us to Rab Isaland. Our leader assured us that the next bus was always late, which was good because our bus was also, and she still had to buy our tickets as well. All was fine as the next bus was much later than hours and we were soon aboard and heading back the way we came for a bit and then turned off to catch the ferry to Rab Island.
On Rab Island the private rooms we had were not configured as expected and so I managed to score a “single” room for 3 nights - the things we have to bear. Rab Island has a lovely harbour and above it an nice old town.
It too has some interesting historical stories, one involved the people of Rab scaring away the Turkish invaders (by putting the relics - bones- of St Christopher on the sea wall).
We enjoyed a great meal with a view in one of the local restaurants in the old town with some trying a truffle pasta (but only the oil of truffle). The Istrian peninsular area is famous for truffles, and from October for a few months the search is on with between 6 and 9 thousand dogs used to search for the luxury fungus.
The following day we had hired a boat for a cruise around the island. The boat was actually a water taxi and we thought that we would struggle to fit in the wooden boat, but in fact we fitted fine - even had room for a family of six to join us to be dropped off on
a stop further along.
We skirted the Island for an hour relaxing in the shade of the boat (it had a cover). Eventually we pulled into a bay area and anchored so that we could jump in for a swim. The water was so clear and fairly warm too. We read books on the roof and front of the boat, until we headed back, with a stop at another harbour for an iced coffee, before finally heading back to the harbour of Rab.
The next day was stormy, and the walk across the island was deferred until the afternoon. It was still looking stormy so I elected not to head out on the shortened walk and instead relaxed in a café near the harbour, catching up on my journal. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant, with some more excellent food.
