Zadar - Day 9 (August 31) Bus travel again, but this afforded more great views of the Croatian coastline. From the bus station on the outskirts of the town we took a local bus to the harbour and old town. I‘m sure the locals just love it when a group of travellers with back packs cram onto their buses. This one was packed and most of our luggage was piled in the centre trapping one lady in, who panicked that she wouldn‘t be able to get out, and feell over bags and was caught by our leader who wa then stuck balancing bags and a lady. She needn‘t have worried as we all were getting off at the same spot. Nothing too hurt, just pride. We wandered through cobble streets to find our small local hotel. ... read more

It all went according to plan, it was quite amazing. Although they're were some dicey moments getting to Zadar. We met Son & Kevin when they arrived at Heathrow (I love airport arrivals) and we hung out with Odin for a while. We had a relaxing lunch in the airport waiting for our flight to Zadar. We first flew to Zagreb, which was delayed, and we would have missed our flight to Zadar had that flight not been delayed as well. We arrived rather late in Zadar but with the best meet and greet: Maja, her sister Marina and her Mom, Amira. Too fun! The best part, however, was our mode of transportation for the next 4 days: the people-carrier. Yes, Marina's poor duty for the next few days was to be the bus driver for ... read more

Saturday 11th July 2009 Woke up during night due to the VERY loud thunder and rain but turned over and went back to sleep fortunately!! Awake at 7am to be packed and at breakfast by 7.30am and we head off from Dubrovnik around 8am. We drive along the Croatian coast till about midday, nowhere to stop for a break but Damo manages to find somewhere around 11.30 for about 45 minutes and from this point we turn away from the coast and head inland along a brand new highway to Split. Most the view today is of rock and scrub hills, you couldn’t really grow a thing along this part of the Croatia it is ALL weathered rock with scrub on it. Our stop in Split is for lunch and we have 2 hours to walk ... read more

I am sitting on our balcony at the Villa Anton in Sukosan as I write this. It is a beautiful sunny morning and at 6 am the air actually feels cool! We arrived here yesterday afternoon once we finally got our rental car. For some reason, the agency wasn’t able to get our credit cards to accept a pre-authorization for damages. After an hour or more we were told that we couldn’t have the car if there was no deposit - even though the rental was pre-paid! We eventually got things worked out thankfully! The major highway from Zagreb to Zadar on the coast is new and very impressive. We went through several tunnels cut through the mountains. I clocked one to be 5 kilometers but there was another that was even longer than that. The ... read more

Having sailed in and out of Zadar several times it feels a little like coming home. We are awaiting the arrival of our other four crew members before setting out on unexplored (for us) waters to Pula. The weather last week was a big improvement over the gales of our first week, yet with enough wind for K to sail every day. We reprovisioned in Trogir and set out for the Kornati Islands, anchoring in scenic, sheltered bays and coves with lots of opportunities for swimming and sunbathing. We are adjusting to a leisurely pace but there is always entertainment. Yesterday we watched two bright yellow planes scooping up water and water-bombing a small island - for practice we assume. Lat nights sunset was spectacular and, with a winning score of 6-4, K is champion of ... read more

14 days is never enough time to fully grasp anything let alone a country and their lifestyle. Yet I needed something to do besides see old towns and churches and what have you. Granted it has been a lot of fun exploring the places that I have seen. I have run around the charming capital of Zagreb, the magnificent old town of Drubovnik, hiking along Plitvice's endless waterfalls and even sojourned to Slovenia for the weekend in order to learn how to pronounce it's capital city Ljubljana. Today however, I chose the town of Zadar to begin my ˝Croatia Day˝and attempt to do as I had observed over the past two weeks. So I started my day with the standard cup of coffee and a burek. Burek is a greasy pastry with a slight hint of ... read more

welcome to croatia, and welcome to another exciting run of the official most boring blog on the interweb! winner! fun times ahead, as i follow my tradition of having an awesome first week, a difficult second week, a great third week and then probably home early! marvel at my lack of awareness that sarcasm and the internet do not work! be amazed at my confusion at the keyboards! enough of this drivel. i am currently in the lovely little croatian coastal town of zadar, and by gum its raining. lovely! arrived here this past wednesday on another of ryanairs glorious cheap flights. why are airlines always so eager to say that there is yet another on time flight? surely they should be on time. you dont get trains claiming to have another on time train. although ... read more

Zadar is an ancient Roman town and is still very well preserved to this day. We stayed at the only hostel, a soul-less, hospital-like YHA about a half hour walk out of town. We try to avoid the Youth Hostels but we were stuck this time. During the day we made the walk into town along the waterfront. It was a beautifully sunny day where we even took our coats off while walking around town. That's saying something for the middle of November. The old town is on a peninsula that makes it feel like an island. The city is still walled in by the ancient Roman wall and most of the streets are pedestrianized. There was a great market but we didn't have a kitchen at the hostel so we just sat and had a ... read more

Zadar - city with 2 of the coolest things in Europe - the Sea Organ and the Sun Disk. These 2 things lift Zadar from being just another lovely Croatian coastal town to being a special place in my memory. Our first stop was coffee for me, a gallery for the guys then off to centre of happiness - the Sea Organ. Outside the old town on the sea front they have build a series of pipes into the waterfront so that the in and out of the waves create sounds along the waterfront. It's a wonderfully relaxing place to sit and spend an hour or 2. For us that meant sitting, talking and acting the goat. We had a mini exercise session, which I ran ... yes I know ... not the biggest advocate of ... read more

Today we travelled from Punat to Zadar. The first part of the journey was along the coast followed by a trip up into the mountains where it was overcast and cool. We then got on the autoroute (toll roads) which has several tunnels one of which was about 3 km long. After the tunells we seemed to enter another climactic zone and the temperature was 19 - 20 degrees and sunny. Zadar is another old walled town and again another tourist destination. Lots of cruise liners and ferries to the islands and Italy & Venice. Many of the streets are paved with travertine. Still very busy in the cities but not as bad as what we have previously experienced. Our hotel was located on the seashore in Privlaka. John had a swim in the Adriatic. The ... read more
